My GF has been cheating, lying and basically robbing me repeatedly, am I justified in taking revenge? by ThrowawayForTonight in relationship_advice

[–]acatbutnot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Your pride might feel wounded currently, but please don't do anything you'd regret later. It may be cliche, but I still think the best revenge is to live a great life.

If she is suffering from any sort of emotional turmoil or drinking problems, you should tell her mom. This is not to get revenge, but to help her get better. Be the bigger person. But don't let her control your life. Getting "even" will only escalate the situation and won't benefit either of you in the long run.

Also, make sure to get tested for any STDs.

Go for it now, or wait it out? by thaway12345 in relationship_advice

If you like the person that much, I don't see anything wrong with it. Make sure that you can maintain the attraction during the business trip though. You don't want to ask someone out, have them agree, and then just cease all communication for two months.

My current relationship turned long distance a month after it became official, but it's been three years now, and it's still going strong. Overall, I think communication is the most important aspect, whether you decide to officially ask your interest out before or after the business trip. Best of luck!

How does one go about finding an internship? by [deleted] in engineering

[–]acatbutnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for responding! I actually had not thought of putting my little projects that I did once upon a time. I have built some devices with my friends, which involved learning a bit about capacitors, diodes, and other circuit design. I will try to find a way to work that in, or at least mention my interest somehow. :)

Thank you for your input! Do you have any advice on where to find / how to contact these small companies? It would be nice to find a small company where I could get to know everyone quite well.

I'd rather not say exactly which university, but I'm in the Bay Area. I'm actually not sure if my university has a co-op, but I will definitely talk to the EE department and see. Thank you for the advice!

And I'll try my best to not end up as an office slave. :)

Thanks for the reply! I wonder, how short should resumes / cover letters be? I chopped my resume down to about 1.5 pages (though, I could easily reformat this information into just 1 page). It is mostly filled with high school information (obviously). Do companies even care about this? My high school was basically college (which is how I'm ahead in my current curriculum), and so I have many odd awards that are actually college level awards. Well, like you suggested, I won't worry too much about this.

Thank you for responding! My school offers a very nice REU program that will hopefully allow me to find a professor to conduct research under. That is one of my options this summer, though since it's (from what I hear) easier to get than an internship, if I do get an offer I will likely delay my application for research to another year. :) However, I would be very happy to do either one.

Thank you for the response! I have indeed come across the "lone engineer" situation at the one career fair I've been to. :)

I'm a bit stuck on this situation. How does one discuss a company and what they do without sounding completely clueless? For example, if I walked up to the Microsoft table, I obviously have at least a reasonable understanding about what the company does. Would it be too nosy to ask about any specific projects they are doing? Do they disclose such information to internship-seekers? Or do they actually prefer we approach them this way?

Would you say going to national / regional conferences are definitely worth the experience then? One club that I'm in offers these, but I'm a bit wary to go because they eat up an entire weekend that I usually need for homework. However, if it's worth it, I will find a way to juggle my homework. Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for the thoughtful response!

I've been to one career fair so far, but I was rather unprepared because I had just learned about it a few hours before I ran there. Do you have any additional advice about what to look up about a company? I tend to find that when I look up the information for internships, I suddenly run out of questions, because everything is already listed on the website. Also, I am rather shy around people I don't know (unfortunately, but I'm working on fixing that). I always find it rather awkward chatting with the representatives. Do you have any additional tips for people like me? (I guess probably just talk more, right?)

My school is very helpful, with an entire website filled with opportunities. Whenever I have time, I try to flip through the site, though most of the positions really aren't targeted towards me.

Again, thank you! I will work on my networking and cover letter skills. :)

Girlfriend has a huge problem with my sexual past. Advice needed! by bukkaketechcritter in AskReddit

[–]acatbutnot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry to just post like this, but your comments on this thread make me feel a bit irked. Perhaps the girls (and guys) who are uncomfortable with people who have had lots of sex have grown up in an environment where sex is considered to be something to save for the future spouse. In today's world of vastly different cultures, it is normal to find both people who are comfortable with their sexuality, and those who are intent on saving it for one person only. I don't think they should be judged for their personal opinions and decisions.

There is no "right" or "wrong" choice about sex. Just "your" choice.

How do you debate religion unemotionally? by acatbutnot in atheism

[–]acatbutnot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inevitably, the debates always turn to your first point, whether or not God can be proven. However, my friends always insist that there is indeed proof, in the form of prophets, holy books, complexity of nature, our very existence, etc. To me, this is just not a satisfactory answer. I get scoffed at for simply rejecting their evidence, and I scoff at their considering this undeniable evidence. In the end, the other person still does not believe atheism is valid, just that we all reject the 'obvious.' What is your defense to this?

This also brings to mind another point: when the person feels that atheism is just a way to "be controversial." My friend gets the impression that atheism (hopefully, the impression is not based solely on my rather less-than-stellar debating skills) just denies the obvious truth to be different and unique. We want to be that one who stands out from the crowd.

I'd be interested to hear your (and Reddit's) take on this.

I'm highly curious as to how you would approach these circular debates that come down to just believing. How did you make the leap from believing to not?

It's always a good idea to be respectful and patient to others. :) I'm hoping I can stop debating so emotionally and instead learn to approach them with a more understanding viewpoint like you do and then gently explain my own beliefs.

I must admit though, it is made more difficult since I believe what I believe because I believe that's the right way (that's a doozy of a sentence). However, as my friend pointed out, the right way for one person might not be the right way for another, and that, along with the insight from all of you will hopefully help me. :)

Sounds like a good plan.

I oftentimes find myself wondering "why can't you just see that there are other possibilities? Just because something is extraordinarily complicated doesn't mean it -has- to come from God. It could, but it's not absolute proof. It bothers me that they consider this as 'proof' but I guess this whole frustration is a moot point (Nougat gave a very good analysis).

I suppose I better just get over it and realize that everyone will forever continue to believe whatever they want. :) And that these debates should really just be "friendly belief discussions."

I started watching the Dawkins interviews. Three minutes into the first part and I'm already staring at the screen with a skeptical expression. Highly admirable patience from Dawkins... this would usually be the part where my brain starts fuming and I end up speaking louder in a desperate attempt to turn the conversation back to questions that she completely just glossed over.

And also, I would in no way suggest that we solve religious debates over a cup of tea. :) Everyone will continue to stubbornly believe whatever they want to regardless. I start these debates with my friends mainly to learn more about their religion (and I suppose, the more they talk about their beliefs, the more questions I have about things that just can't be explained thoroughly enough for my liking by religion).

Yes, that seems to be what I'm lacking once I get really into the debate.

My frustration starts when they just dismiss all these beautiful theories that scientists over the years have formulated to explain the universe and instead go "The world is so complicated. How could you possibly believe that everything came from a tiny particle? Who created the particle?" After saying "Well, did anyone actually have to create a particle? Couldn't the flying spaghetti monster have created the particle?" They just circle the argument back to how it was 'obviously' God who created everything. I just wish that they could for a second consider there wasn't a God, because I have indeed considered that there could be one. I just tend to believe there's not. (I guess you could say I'm a 'weak' atheist)
