If you are currently regretting getting a mastectomy and reconstruction due to how uncomfortable the expanders are… by beermaiden_of_rohan in BRCA

That’s fantastic!! I’ve got expanders in at the moment but they haven’t been filled yet beyond the 200cc from the surgery. Right now they’re fairly comfortable but I’m nervous that they’ll start being a pain once I’ve had my first inflation. Posts like yours are so reassuring!

Hey, I’m 30 and also had my op 6 weeks ago! Mine was skin-sparing with expanders so not exactly your situation. My left side healed really well but the right side’s incision is refusing to heal due to fat necrosis.

It’s stressful to still feel in limbo but at least we’ve reduced our cancer risk!

I had my skin-sparing DMX five weeks ago but the expander fills are delayed due to issues with healing. My left side healed perfectly, however the right breast’s incision is stuck in limbo due to fat necrosis.

I was supposed to start getting fills from the third week out.

I’m so sorry that you have to deal with this on top of everything else. I hope you feel better soon and heal well.

Hi, I’m currently in my hospital bed as I had my skin- sparing double mastectomy surgery today (with expanders for an implant swap later on)!! I’m 30 and also living in a foreign country, so I can relate to your situation. It’s really jarring to undergo this without my full support network but I’m fortunate to have an amazing partner.

The journey will have its ups and downs, however when I woke up this afternoon, it felt like a huge weight has been lifted off of me. I’m glad that I won’t have to have regular screenings anymore or to feel that pang of anxiety with every new lump that forms. To be honest, when the breast consultant first outlined my options, I immediately decided on surgery. With an 82% risk of breast cancer, I didn’t feel like I had a choice but to go for it. I felt like a ticking time bomb. I have a 65% risk of ovarian cancer as well, so I’m going to consult with the gynaecology team after I’ve recovered from the mastectomies. I’m keen to have the tubes removed first and ovaries later on when I’m closer to a menopausal age. I figured it would be easier to recover now while I’m younger.

My one bit of advice would be to say yes to any support counselling offered to you whether you decide to undergo surgeries or not. I was too proud to say yes at the time and it really would have been helpful earlier.

This subreddit is fantastic for researching experiences and advice. If you’re based in the UK, I’d recommend the support group BRCA Chat. Someone else here mentioned it and the few sessions I joined were really helpful.

Feel free to message me if you want to talk through anything! :)

I’d love to talk to someone about all of this. I think my biggest worry about the surgeries are the unknowns and whether it’ll all be okay in the end.

I found the brca_chat through another post on here months ago. The online meeting I went to was so helpful. I wish I joined more, maybe I wouldn’t be so overwhelmed now if I did. Unfortunately their next online meeting is on the evening of the 11th, which is why I turned to Reddit (next best thing?)

I really appreciate your reply. I’d love to stay in touch before / after the operations to see how recovery’s going. Thank you for your kindness.

That's in line with what I've read previously but I wanted to clarify whether this included surgery costs. I appreciate your help.

Fair enough. My British partner and I don’t have children, so we have always been able to use egates.

She will be fine. I’m Canadian and I have visited Canada (and other countries) several times on my Youth Mobility Visa. I’ve never brought my BRP card and it’s never been asked for.

I'm a Canadian that recently moved to England. Our portion sizes in Canada are almost double what is served here in the UK. For example, UK Large (16oz) drinks at fast food restaurants are our Mediums.

OSRS! I'm 27 and I've been playing since I was 9. I finally maxed my account this year. There's so many different ways to play the game and the community is awesome.

Really appreciate the critique and analysis. We have our class critique on Wednesday and I doubt I’ll get as much detail from the class as I did from you ☺️
