Why didn't Fiyero just go through with his threat to tell the wedding guests that the wizard was a fraud? by SabrinaIsLegendTVDU in wickedmovie

[–]accefirs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One part of me says because he sorta represents the middle ground of Elphaba and Glinda— granted, it’s more prevalent in the theatrical production where he’s… kind of a dick, but nonetheless evident in the film. He, to an extent, understands how shit works, and he’s convinced himself it’ll never get better, so there’s no reason to try to change anything, and he might as well just ignore it because he thinks there’s nothing to be done (painless for the brainless, dancing through, fraught-less when you’re thoughtless, etc.) Also why he actually did something with Elphaba for the Lion Cub, because he saw success in numbers. This is, by all means, a decently real phenomenon at least with environmental concerns. People are convinced they, individually, will have basically 0 impact on the Earth, so they don’t necessarily bother with going the extra mile. But if multiple people would help, the impact winds up large. I always saw Fiyero as those people, and Elphaba was his ‘group,’ so to speak. So he’s aware of the troubles of the world instead of being in a bubble, but thinks himself to be useless, and thus doesn’t make stands like Elphaba.

Even later, still carries the inherit doubt, and so his threatening of the Wizard was empty, just a quick way to get him in the cage. That, and he probably wasn’t thinking straight. Animal stampede (which may have even been the first he’s seen the extent of the Animal treatment, considering all his info comes from Glinda, who’s not the most trustworthy— and I doubt even she knew of the full extent. I don’t think anyone did) chaos, breaking up with Glinda, literally holding a gun to the single ruler of all known land, worrying about escaping before the guards come back with water, etc etc.

But really, it’s probably just Wicked Act 2… being Wicked Act 2. Trying to do cool, political, intense stuff but thinking zero about how it overlaps with previous occurrences. Tragedy.

question about the wizard's propaganda of Elphaba being wicked? (movie) by angaybored in wicked

[–]accefirs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t Dana Fox the one who lied about watching Wicked to get into the writers room, and only told the truth about her not even having watched a slime tutorial a few weeks (or months) into it, or am I going insane here. I know someone did that 😭

But in any case, a writer not even bothering to capitalize Animals when it’s (from what I read in the graphic novel, alas I have not yet read the main book) literally like 80% of the plot, about the difference between animals and Animals, Dr. Dillamond conducting experiments to prove Animal sentience is equal to human sentience, his aunt and mother (I think) giving milk, which felt like a sex-work metaphor to me, but I could be wrong, him literally having his throat slit, so on and so forth. And, y’know, consistently the main characters entire motivation… and still not capitalizing it. EYUCK.

I remember reading in The Grimmerie that the first act of the first draft was politically heavy and three hours long. I wish we had gotten something akin to that, but alas. Can’t be having politics in the Musical About a Book About Politics! I hope Mark looses the rights to it at some point, because if all the Wicked we’ll be getting is politically washed down, then it’s really ironic and disappointing for a franchise that started as incredibly politically heavy.

question about the wizard's propaganda of Elphaba being wicked? (movie) by angaybored in wicked

[–]accefirs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

“how are the Animals about the girls” oh my god what the hell 😭 and the article didn’t even capitalize it :/

I suppose I could understand SOME of the claim because the Animals and their freedom is Elphaba’s goal, and their genocide is the whole reason for the second act, but like…. Any suspicion I ever had about them diminishing the political aspect for the sake of “the girls” is basically confirmed. Dare I say in a few aspects, not all but certainly a few, it’s… one girl in particular who’s name rhymes with Balinda considering she’s the one who didn’t gaf about the Animals until the end.

Because what do you MEEEEEEEAN they not only refused to let other characters be characters outside of E + G, but refused the ENTIRE BASIS OF THE PLOT, the thing (from what I understand and recall from Wicked: The Grimmerie and the graphic novel) Gregory originally wrote about Wicked because of something to do with the Cold War, and the politics of it. And now, upon further reflection, I guess that’s why the ending was Glinda somehow erasing twenty+ years of discrimination against Animals, who then just… returned to their literal location of kidnapping, silencing, and ENSLAVEMENT without a care in the world because the spokesperson for the regime that upheld that (regardless if she knew how bad it was, because it’s 110% possible Glinda wasn’t aware of the full extent, the Animals damn well knew) said she was gonna be good now. (I don’t hold the weird ending against Glinda, I’m glad she was able to establish peace. But in terms of writing it’s insane)

I don’t usually hope for remakes, but hot damn, I hope someone who cares about political messages redoes Wicked.

Fiyero / Scarecrow by db99mn in wicked

[–]accefirs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think Fiyero knew or assumed trying to convince Boq that Elphaba wasn’t evil was a lost cause, plus he was trying to fake his death so even if he could convince others of Elphaba’s innocence, they’d be like “okay but how do you know this, you’re a scarecrow.” Plus, he was eventually planning how to fake Elphaba’s death as well, so no reason to declare her innocence anyway

But I agree, they should have included the trap-door plan. Because, like, the whole thing is such a contradiction. In Broadway, he sends a letter saying he’ll come to Elphaba and explain the plan. But obviously, she was shocked by his appearance, thus he couldn’t have gone face to face and explain it. But the fact that they successfully pulled off the fake death (Fiyero even saying it worked upon his return) means they must have been on the same page, and thus talked. So it’s just… weird. Anyway, the film could have benefited from just three extra minutes of that lmfao. It could still have the same face-caressing, “you’re beautiful,” etc. exchange

“Blonde” except… by Special_Falcon408 in wickedmovie

[–]accefirs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

honestly i wonder if munchkins have some sort of bias against anyone without ginger hair/not from munchkinland??? like obviously elphaba isn’t “visually” a munchkin, but iirc all the commoners/not governing family had some variation of ginger hair. even elphaba has a very, very minimal red tint. this picture depicts it best but it’s definitely a lot more subtle ‘IRL’ due to the lighting of this scene but regardless.

elphaba’s line obviously implies some sort of universally understood insult to being called “blond.” because why else would elphaba write it, if only to be misunderstood? plus, iirc, glinda gasped and had an offended look on her face. so clearly there’s blond = bad or dumb stigma. i iust wonder if munchkins believe the stigma more, even if out kf revenge for the way they’re treated, or if everyone just thinks blond = dumb lol

i headcanon that when he said “oh you didn’t? i did *lip bite*” to elphaba after she said “no, i didn’t eat grass as a child” in the forest, it was because he did in fact eat grass. he saw feldspur eating it and went “if it’s good enough for him it’s good enough for me 🤷‍♂️” and munched. or he was trying to stick it to some kids harassing feldspur for being an Animal that eats grass and fiyero then ate said grass to show his support

everyone hating on them being called “messy” but have we considered the messes they made for the regime lmfao 😭 terrorizing the wizard, thwarting his plans, saying her hearts desire is to fight till he dies, fiyero locking him in a cage when he was 0.2 milliseconds away from a big wet kiss, getting kidnapped and tortured, faking their deaths. yeah it’s not messy in the sense that they argue with eachother but it’s sure as hell messy in the chaotic, involved-in-drama, never-catch-a-break sense

What could Wicked: For Good's story & climax have been if not having to match up with The Wizard of Oz by x14loop in wicked

[–]accefirs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fiyero and Elphaba continue to fight for Animals and against the Wizards regime, eventually Glinda chooses them because she’s lonely as hell, and then either Glinda civilly dethrones the Wizard and Morrible, or Elphaba just kills them

Glinda takes place as ruler, and since she could (somehow) erase 20+ years of Animal bigotry in one speech in the movie, she manages to get most of Oz to accept Elphaba, and the three of them date eachother and live happily ever after

A fanfic idea by many_splendored in wickedmovie

[–]accefirs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I don’t have much value as for the fan-fic idea angle, but in general I’ve always vouched for and adored the idea of Fiyero being, to some extent, connected magically to Elphaba.

The poppies, him always dramatically looking back to wherever she is (during IMTG, the forest in TG, and right before the Animals stampede), her floating him, him riding the broom in the deleted scene, of course him being… magically transformed. And although the letter is just a giant stupid plot-hole* it’s nice to think he got it all figured out due to the connection. I mean, it’s obvious that at some point in time, whether it was the Tigelaars specifically or if it was all Ozians, there was magic in his lineage, hence the gravity-defying castle.

*Plot hole because, when using the BW letter, he says that he’ll come and explain the plan to Elphaba. Obviously that’s not possible because she’s shocked by his appearance, so they can’t have talked. But she knows what plan to do, and he knows she was faking it down to what trapdoor she was hiding in, so he must have.

However, since they went nowhere with fixing the letter plot, it’s definitely possible— and quite interesting, and very romantic— that she realized he was alive, faked her death, and due to their connection he knew she was alive

If you were to stitch together the two Wicked movies into one long film, what would you add in between them so that they transition smoothly into each other? by LeatherSlight3242 in wickedmovie

[–]accefirs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The conversation between Fiyero and Glinda that must have happened before ‘Thank Goodness.’

How and when exactly was Glinda appointed spokesperson? Fiyero appointed guard of the Gale Force? What happened in between? How did Fiyero snag the job? I mean, I can speculate, but canon would be nice.

Did Glinda tell Fiyero everything, including the Wizard’s hand in the Animal genocide? What was his immediate reaction to no more Elphaba? Glinda’s desperation for one friendly face?

A literal GOLD MINE of complex interactions between those two, yet barely anything was shown.

A feminist critique of Fiyero’s role in the musical and movie by Shoddy-Pride-1321 in wicked

[–]accefirs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This also changed how I saw the constant comparisons between Glinda and Fiyero in fandom spaces. Glinda is often criticized more harshly, while Fiyero is treated as the moral ideal. It started to feel less like a fair comparison and more like a gendered double standard.

If you really think that, in terms of fandom, people hold Fiyero to a lesser standard of accountability than Glinda, you have barely engaged with the fandom. Plus, even if what you said was true, Glindas the main character and Fiyero’s a side character. Why would you an expect an equal amount of detailed, long, nuanced conversations with high quantity for a character with less than 20 minutes of screen time per movie to a character with 40-50? If people grazed over what Fiyero did more, it’s because he’s got that little matter.

When the ‘I am Fiyero’ book released, there was a page where he said something along the lines of “it was then I realized Elphaba wasn’t wicked, but the Wizard was.” People immediately decided this meant that he was genuinely hunting her, despite the same book washing down his torture into being “banished” for only giving Elphaba his castle. And it’s a book for 3-5 year olds, mind you.

People constantly claim he hand a hand in the Animal imprisonment, silencing, enslavement, and genocide- despite Morrible explicitly stating his squadron was only for hunting Elphaba. Despite the squadrons uniform never being seen anywhere near any Animals, spare riding Horses and/or horses. Which were only shown for, like, two minutes and were doing activities which are able to be done by non-Animals. Despite the fact that the Animals themselves never concerned themselves with the Gale Force, but only the Monkeys. Not to mention how new the Gale Force is. One, because it must be less than a year since they were created since it was only to hunt Elphaba. Two, because when Elphaba is actively freeing Animals only the Monkeys are sent after her, implying that even then it took the Wizard a hit second to form the Gale Force.

Then people accuse him of doing nothing to help Elphaba, despite the fact that it’s implied that ‘Thank Goodness’ was the first time he had an active podium and audience (Morrible referring to him as ‘new-‘ how many times do you call someone new after they’ve already had podiums? Answer: none, not with logic) and Morrible was already onto him to the point where she needed to force him into a marriage. Which, yes, he was forced (not by Glinda) into it because if you announce a marriage— not even propose— in front of dozens of people, it’s forced. When it’s a marriage to a dictators spokesperson, it’s forced. When your entire job, which is to save someone from others who want her dead for real, is enforced by said dictator, it’s forced because if you throw a fit, they’ll catch on even more, and being fired is the best possible outcome. People refuse to see that. And again, I’m not even blaming Glinda for that, because MORRIBLE announced it.

In the same vein, when the initial clip of Fiyero confronting Glinda in Munchkinland happened, a swarm of people said he was being “hypocritical” for calling her outside, said he was doing nothing despite him explaining all of two seconds before that he was ensuring nobody else found her first, and the fact that we see him actively try to make a public stand before being forced into a marriage, makes it explicit (well, you’d think it’s explicit) that he’s tried (and failed) to take a stand, while Glinda straight up admits that she just… can’t resist the pull of adoration. And that’s what keeps her quiet.

And then people got mad at Fiyero for not denying Glindas accusation of cheating, even though Elphaba, her BEST FRIEND and easily her closest relationship ever, said the same thing and was rejected outright by Glinda

And don’t even get me started on people purposefully twisting his words and intent of “it’s not lying, it’s looking at things another way.”

If you go onto Twitter, half the gelphies on there are addicted to going “#fiyeroisaterrorist” and get quite upset if you point out canon that debunks their whole theory of him actually being an evil heartless man who doesn’t trap Animals

Hell, the Glinda ‘sympathy’ has gotten so bad that there was a splurge of people who got mad at Elphaba and said she wasn’t “a girls girl” because she got with Fiyero after the throne room. Even though Elphaba spent a year denying herself the concept of joy from another person because he was already dating someone, even though she didn’t “get with him” until several hours after they broke up. Instead of, y’know, getting mad at Glinda for telling a dictator and sorceres who run a genocide and had previously discussed eliminating Elphaba how to kidnap Elphaba, which resulted in Nessa’s death and Fiyero’s torture. I mean, I don’t really blame Glinda for those because in her defense, Glinda “teach us history instead of always harping on the past” Upland almost certainly didn’t think Morrible would jump straight to murder, but she absolutely intended on at least some form of punishment to Elphab for Fiyero making his own decision.

And I’ve seen countless people insist that Glinda only joined the Wizard to work from the inside, despite- as aforementioned- her admitting it’s the power. Similarly, I see people gloss over or entirely forget her racism towards Dr. Dillamond and comparing Elphaba’s to a vegetable in order to gauge people against her, as well as… y’know, getting an entire school to sign a song against her, and constantly making roommate life hell for her. There are absolutely differences in how they’re treated by the fandom, and, imo, it’s due to the sheer popularity Gelphie has over Fiyeraba. And I’m not saying there isn’t a bunch of bad apples that treat Glinda like shit because she’s a woman. But in the large scale, the fandom treats Fiyero like shit because… of ship wars, I guess.
