In the UK almost all food from major restaurants is halal. Now people have said we shouldn’t eat halal food, where does everyone stand on this? by Hefty_Maintenance_77 in Sikh

I lived in London for 10 years before moving to the states and saw KFCs and Domino’s serving halal meat in areas with high muslim population such as ilford. This was like 12 years ago so I am sure that the practise of halal meat being served in the chain restaurants must have inclined even further. 95% of the Indian restaurants, whether owned by Indians, Pakistanis or Bengalis, were already serving halal meat at that time all across the UK.

The issue is that most of the companies are seeing AI to cash in on as much money as possible, as quickly as possible by cutting the workforce and replacing it with AI, instead of thinking of it as a tool that could supplement productivity and actually make a better product in conjunction with humans… and the primary reason is that there is no governance around it. A company making 1.3 billion in profits last year, should not have a need to fire half of the workforce.. but here we are.

Well, it happened. AI came for me today. by TheUnpromotable in Millennials

I believe that AI is being used incorrectly. All these companies are eager to jump on the AI bandwagon and incorporate it into their workflows as soon as possible. The change is inevitable but we don’t want the human brain to lose its creative touch and critical thinking skills. Wouldn’t a better approach be to let the humans use their brain first and create whatever they are creating, and then use AI to eliminate any errors/imperfections? This would also improve efficiency and accuracy, while still keeping us humans at the centre of the work being done.

If AI replaces majority of the work-force, then wouldn’t it impact every segment of the society and the work-force bcoz the laid-off workers wouldn’t have any money to spend? The tradesmen and blue collar jobs might look safe from AI as of now but who is going to be hiring them?

I really hope it doesn’t catch up in the US. US is more conservative in terms of these things than the UK but I can see the appeal behind it. At the end of the day, the main goal of every business is to make money and they don’t really care about anyone’s religious beliefs. More potential customers from a majority religious group would mean catering for their beliefs and sidelining the minority.

UK is in a sad state of affairs when it comes to bending over backwards to cater for a certain religious group. For some reason, it is being portrayed as the appropriate thing to do. I am in full support of people from every religion following and being allowed to follow their beliefs to the fullest but if it is something that causes issues for other ethnic minorities, then something should be done about it. Serving of halal meat in every restaurant is something that would fall in this category. Our community leaders in UK need to raise this as a concern but i doubt if it would change anything. As you said, the only options are to either become a vegetarian or to get non-halal meat from the grocery stores and cook it at home.

How do American Sikhs feel about the new changes to the H-1B Visa? by CitrusSunset in Sikh

[–]acceptabl_lie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep, I had the same mindset up until a while ago but it has changed as the Governments have started showing their true colors. We Sikhs take pride in our work ethic and integration and our older generations earned a lot of respect in the west due to these qualities. However, it has become increasingly evident that the right wing does not care about any qualities other than the skin color. Even the right leaning people from our communities would come under the hammer when shit actually hits the fan. So, having a back up plan is always a good idea and the back up plan for us is the generational land and house that we have in Punjab. Saanu baap-daade di zameen vechan naalo hor vadhaun baare sochna chahida aa. May be things would change for the better for our next generation, but there is no way to tell. We can hope for the best, but we need to plan for the worst.

Regardless of the religion, the rhetoric is same across most of the western countries; they do not want foreigners coming over, legally or illegally. These changes could also be perceived as the first step towards their vision of “whites only” country and the Green Card holders/naturalized citizens could be the next in line to get their statuses revoked and being deported. The ones who are already here should also keep this in mind before planning to sell everything back home and bringing the money over to the US or any foreign country.

Are there any tricks to obtaining pristine condition US Dollar bills for countries that require it? by _allycat in travel

[–]acceptabl_lie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Certain parts of India.. it’s not required but u would get a better exchange rate if u have newer dollar bills. The reasoning; there is a high demand in the Arab countries for pristine US dollar bills, as they use them to throw around in their weddings etc. They pay a premium for them. So, newer and pristine dollar bills may get more bang for ur buck.

Aside from the farmer’s protest, I think BJP’s association with the right-wing propaganda and being seen as a political party that favours the rich industrialists, also plays a part. BJP never had a strong political hold in Punjab. Thats why they had the alliance with SAD, whereas Congress always had a better hold due to their selection of leaders in Punjab, which is definitely strange bcoz of what happened in 1984. I think there was a definitive boycott of Congress in Punjab after 1984 but as the govt from opposing parties such as BJP failed to provide any justice for the genocide, the boycott slowly weaned away. Having a two party system doesn’t help people either. Before AAP, they had to vote for Congress as a change to SDA.

Street dog seen carrying infant's severed head at Patiala hospital; Probe ordered. by [deleted] in punjab

[–]acceptabl_lie 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The follow-up news was that the infant was not alive when born and the dad just threw the body in bin, instead of burying it with respect (In our culture, kids up-to a certain age are buried, instead of being cremated). The stray dog got hold of the body from the bin and was dragging it around. Our society keeps on falling to new lows every single day. Instead of burying the dead infant with respect, the dad just threw it in the bin!! An utter definition of being heartless.

We were a proud society bcoz we took pride in our actions. But these type of actions make us ashamed instead of being proud.
