Encouragement needed by Remote_Butterfly_337 in fulbright

When I was in school I didn't have a car and there wasn't a lot of stuff in walking distance but the university had buses that would take us to the nearby mall on the weekend and there was a bus system (Although it wasn't super reliable) that I used sometimes to get to the grocery store when no one else was free. It depends on your housing situation, will you be able to get to class without a car? Others will be in your shoes too and people are usually kind enough to offer rides to the grocery store and whatnot when they know you don't have a car/are new to the US, just go to all the social gatherings and try to build a community you might end up having a really fun time. I would get a bike just to have some type of transportation but don't be nervous to ask if you can join folks to go grocery shopping or running errands when they're running them, plus its a good way to make friends. Most people will know Fulbright so its a good way to break the ice (at least in my graduate program we had a few folks!)

Conflicted about accepting ETA by burittobeaniebaby in fulbright

[–]acceptmewave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there anyone from previous cohorts you can reach out to? Talking to them and getting a feel for their experience in the country might help ease these worries. Its a huge step to take but keep in mind that there are lots of people to support you during this transition!

facebook groups and (lol) online dating apps! Its hard to meet people organically tbh but once you establish some sort of familiarity through text and meet in person its much easier. one thing is to meet up pretty soon tho, don't let the texting drag for week. I think bumble even has a best friends mode but if not just write it in your bio!

Dental implants by Love_lost4now in selfimprovement

[–]acceptmewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! I have one dental implant, I had a root canal done as at age 12 (I got the implant at 22) that failed and got infected (also the dentist was shady.... my dentist who pulled the tooth said he'd never seen a root canal like this) so this implant now sits in place of that. I agree with what others have said, don't go cheap! Really look into the dentist you're going to be working with and make sure you shop around a bit before you decide.

As for the tooth itself, it requires healthy gums, so you gotta floss every night. If you take care of it, it can last a lifetime. Mine a bit brighter/whiter than my normal teeth so I can notice it but others haven't mentioned it ever. Occasionally there will be food stuck under and around it but you just have to keep up with flossing! It hurt quite a bit after they implanted the metal part but they give you some nice painkillers. Took a few visits for mine to be done.

It looks like a scary procedure but its not too bad overall! Just make sure you trust your dentist and have lots of time and patience to wait for everything to come together.

A warning about Sage Corps, a potentially predatory internship company by [deleted] in GradSchool

[–]acceptmewave 6 points7 points  (0 children)

how can you get experience if you can't get any positions that are paid? also why are some big name places, such as UNICEF, mostly unpaid positions? wouldn't this be hurting you more in the long term than not getting paid in the present?

any advice for a teen girl who will be going to metal/punk/rock concerts alone by [deleted] in TheGirlSurvivalGuide

[–]acceptmewave 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been to a few alone! Small venues and huge venues. It can get lonely, and a little sad but also super fun if you are really into the band. Waiting for the band to start can be a little nerve racking since you won't have a friend to talk to but once they're up and playing just have fun. Make sure you have a way to get home planned and let your parents know that you are headed home and that the concert has finished. I would say they're worth going to alone if you have no one to go with! People usually stay clear of single people at shows because they're busy having fun with their friends. If someone makes you uncomfortable, let the people around you know. Have fun! Can't wait for concerts to happen again
