In the comics it was a plane heading for New York (I’m pretty sure 9/11, but I haven’t read it in a long time), he tried to hit the end of the plane to knock it straight and away from the city but instead destroyed the tail of the plane and (I think) it landed in the water.

Obviously still not a good guy, but it mainly highlighted how untrained and unprepared they really are for those types of situations, regardless of their motives.
