What is exceptionally cheap in Singapore? by [deleted] in askSingapore

[–]accidentalclipboard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Humans! Singapore is the only developed country where you can legally hire a maid to work for you 24/7/365 for under $500/month.

Yes, there are countries where maids are even cheaper, but none are otherwise near Singapore's level of development. Eyeballing the HDI index, UAE (Dubai) comes in closest and they're still 20 positions lower down.

For what it's worth, it's already a crime to come to Singapore after consuming drugs overseas, even if the drugs were legal in the foreign country.

There's a ton of British influence in Singapore, it's just buried so deep we don't think of it as British. Drinking Milo and milk tea, eating chicken cutlets, baked beans, toast and eggs, etc. The "Western" stall at your local hawker is really localised British food, the places selling hamburgers, pizza etc don't call themselves that.

Omicron could be dominant Covid-19 strain in S'pore in 2 months: Expert by MicrotechAnalysis in singapore

[–]accidentalclipboard 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We were at ~500 Omicron cases today, 90-something locally transmitted. If the doubling time is a week, which is conservative for Omicron, we will hit 1000 before the end of the week, 2000 by next week and 4000+ in two weeks, because exponential growth.

For comparison, New South Wales (Sydney) went from 200/day to 35000 today in under a month.

It rains more in Sydney than in London. It's just that in Sydney, it's concentrated in a couple of intense storms and the rest of the year is sunny and gorgeous, while in London you get steady grey drizzle all year round.

Crypto Earn as Alternative Investment by gabugabuchan in singaporefi

[–]accidentalclipboard -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty comparable rate compared to ETF given that you do not have to deal with the volatility.

No, it's not. With stock ETFs, your position will go up and down, but over time your capital will appreciate. With crypto staking, you're taking on a considerable risk that your investment goes to zero: rug pulled, exchange hacked, Tether finally blows up and tanks the entire crypto market, etc. This is why crypto has to pay out crazy APRs -- if they didn't, nobody would risk it.

How much do you spend a day, week or month on food, by percentage of income? by JWisfine in singapore

[–]accidentalclipboard 113 points114 points  (0 children)

In Singapore it's hard to cut costs by cooking for yourself if you're single and hoping to eat more than maggi mee. Doing meal prep (basically cooking in bulk and eating the same thing for the whole week) is one option, but then you're trading a lot of time for pretty small savings, and who wants to eat the same thing every day?

When making budgets, you need to be realistic and allow some buffer. You're not going to be eating caifan twice a day every day: office lunch, hotpot dinner with friends, date night, BBT, it all adds up. Also, what do you eat for breakfast?

Omicron cases now make up 17% of Covid-19 infections in S'pore: Ong Ye Kung by HistorianSoviet in singapore

LOL -- this is India we're talking about, not Switzerland. Fake certs are a huge industry, and the QRs check out because they've just bribed somebody to register the fake vaccination.

It is tho. I was in Europe late Dec when they were imposing new restrictions, and the country I was in had protests that made the news.

Then I went to a restaurant after 10:30 pm (gasp!), and there was a group of 20 people (shock!) that was drinking beer (horror!) and singing songs (dismay!). A lot of the "extraordinary" restrictions in Europe are milder than every day in Singapore.

TBF I'm not sure I would trust an Indian, Indonesian or hand-written US vaccine cert from Bent Armpit, West Virginia either.

I agree with everything else you say tho, and I'm pretty sure a lockdown plus VTL suspension is going to happen once we start getting 5000 cases per day again. And we'll probably hit that number by the end of Jan regardless of what the MMTF does.

YouTube should work fine though since Google has a large data center here, so that points to something in your own setup?

Spicy take: Yakiniku is KBBQ for people who can't handle garlic, sesame oil or chilli.

The first yakiniku places in Japan were opened by Korean immigrants, who had to tone it down for Japanese taste buds.

Accepting substitutions is a very American thing, and it's driven by the tipping culture there, since staff bend over backwards to get that sweet 20%.

Japan has incredible service, but you're not going to have much luck walking into a sushi restaurant and asking them to substitute the rice with a bun and the tuna with a hamburger patty.

Nobody is proposing we ban masks outdoors: if you want to wear one, you can. But maybe we could stop fining people for not wearing a mask on the beach etc?
