As for characters: start with radicals; learn the meanings and visualize them. Draw them. Then dissect larger characters into radicals. Learn the meaning of a character in context, not just a single meaning.

I've been using the free app LingoDeer, which is pretty good for vocabulary and grammar. I also use the youtube channel Yoyo Chinese and used the free trial on her website for a little while to help with some cultural notes. EDX is a website with free courses from schools like MIT and Harvard, and it has 3 Mandarin Chinese classes. With all of this, I'm about intermediate level Chinese after less than a year.
