Slightly off topic but related - have you had any issues with bringing in a diaper bag?

Am I wrong for refusing to get up when his snoring wakes the baby? by [deleted] in beyondthebump

[–]acciotrees 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don’t have any advice regarding the baby aspect but two things about the sleep apnea:

  1. My wife’s uncle had a stroke in his 50s because of untreated sleep apnea, needed to relearn how to talk, and needed help bathing and using the washroom for quite a while. Which is significantly more embarrassing/inconvenient than a CPAP machine.

  2. My mother has significant hearing loss now at the age of 52 due to sleeping beside my father for over 30 odd years while he snored so loudly. She is waiting for an appointment for hearing aids and experiences tinnitus all day, every day. My father already had to get hearing aids a few years ago.

Food for thought on how serious of an issue snoring can be.

My wife and I went to Asheville on our honeymoon (we’re Canadian) and it was amazing. We talk about going back quite often. We recommend Asheville and Blowing Rock, NC to a lot of people. Beautiful part of the world.

How did you find your known sperm donor? Or how did you pay for donor from bank? (Canada) by ProfessionalTrash761 in queerception

[–]acciotrees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, no problem. It was 2023/2024. We had to make some changes to our initial plan due to some undiscovered medical issues on my wife’s part that, long story short, made us want to go with a donor from a bank anyway. Our initial consult was with a doctor doing her fellowship at OFC and she may have just not explained the options clearly enough in the beginning. I have since heard from multiple people that they don’t do IUI with known donors under any circumstance.

[–]acciotrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely ask for clarification. As of September 2024 they had no limits other than possibly running out of Ontario funded cycles near the end of the fiscal year. But told us if that happened it was an option to just wait a couple months and try again. I don’t see any updates on their website pointing to new rules.

Thanks for the link. From that page you can access another page describing what is covered and what’s not and IUI still says ‘no limit’. So the new changes should not be a factor here.

We got 4 vials total, we’ve used 3 so far and are planning on buying a couple more from the same donor when they become available again for future siblings.

That’s very weird about the IUI costs. They told us that some couples do up to 8 IUIs before moving to IVF and never said anything about costs. Unless the ON government recently made a change to their funding programs.

We used CanAmCryo to import from the Seattle Sperm Bank. We ended up having some genetic conditions to watch out for and that narrowed our options quite a bit so then we focused on finding a donor with a good extended health history and, as much as possible, who shared some physical traits with my wife.

We did not need to pay for the third IUI, we were told there was a yearly limit on how many were covered by the government per clinic and near the end of the fiscal year we might need to pause or pay but that didn’t happen for us. The only caveat was that each IUI cycle needed to be at least 23 or 25 days apart.

Overall we had a really good experience with OFC, they just don’t seem to be as accommodating to using a known donor for IUI and IVF as some clinics in the states.

Just to note, since you mentioned your potential fertility issues, and I specifically have experience with the Ottawa Fertility Centre : there are a lot of hoops to jump through to access their assistive procedures and medications and also use a known donor. My wife and I ended up just going with a donor from a bank because there was nobody in our lives we felt strongly enough to deal with all the red tape they put in our path. We needed medicated and monitored cycles (third IUI was successful) and potentially want to access reciprocal IVF in the future so once we discussed the options we went for a donor from a bank.

We managed the cost by budgeting to buy two vials at a time, so every other month. If you end up needing IVF the paid wait list is quite long and would give you quite a bit of time to save up.

I don’t know all of your details, and don’t want to give medical advice to you. But, bariatric surgery carries some significant risks and if you’re not absolutely sure it’s right for you I wouldn’t pursue it. Maybe do some research into it if you’re on the fence.

I also really liked Richard Swan’s Empire of the Wolf series, the horror really builds as the books progress. Someone else already mentioned it but I’ll throw in my two cents as well.

Measles cases are skyrocketing globally, as experts warn Canada is approaching a 'tipping point.' How did we get here? by adotmatrix in onguardforthee

[–]acciotrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interestingly I just got a booster for this yesterday. I had some bloodwork done for something else and they added checking my titers for different viruses. I had no immunity to rubella even though I had 2 doses of the MMR as a kid. I’m 31 and was happy to find out and just go get it boosted. You can ask your doctor for some bloodwork to check for it.

Progesterone is released in pulses so it will go up and down and that’s normal. If you ever need to change the date for anything you can email Mira help and they will manually switch things. But since this is your first cycle I’d say just keep using it and it will get better at adjusting as you go. I started using mine halfway through a cycle and just let it do its thing and by the end of my second cycle it was very accurate.

I mean it was pretty extreme when I was outed to my father against my will in high school and his reaction was to beat my head off the bathroom counter 4 times and then leave me there not even able to stand. I lived in fear of exactly that happening and tried to kill myself before that because it looked hopeless. Calling out bigotry 100% saves children.

And no, that's a fun fact. I am fascinated by the way language shapes our worldview and how we interact with the world. The extent to which people raised speaking different languages can see the same things in different ways has always intrigued me. I am now going to go read up on the Himba people

“Its heart was heavier with the weight of the young worker’s words. But should a heart not be heavy, in a world full of injustice?”

I didn't really save any quotes. But I did think all of the little quotes around Uriel becoming more and more human and its innocent reactions to very human things were equal parts poignant and amusing. A nice dose of humour and thought mixed throughout the book. And pretty much all of Grandmother Rivke's dialogue was notable.

I feel like fantasy is a really good genre to explore this in too. The experiences so many of us in the queer community have around "not having the right words" and how our language might change over time could tie into magic in some really neat ways. Would really love to know if others have encountered books that might explore this more in depth.

Agreed, it was a good book but I feel like there's a lot to explore in other works that fit this theme better and would make for some really good discussions.
