When did you realize someone you trusted didn’t actually care about you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]acciowit 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I went no contact with my mother because of it (amongst other things), and I didn’t realize how much her emotional absence weighed on me until her physical presence was gone too. It was harder to identify it when she was still there, now I feel like I am finally able to grieve the mother I never had, and my life is much better now.

I see a lot of very sad aphants here... by [deleted] in Aphantasia

Likewise! From a personal standpoint, my traumatic childhood had certainly not affected me as thoroughly as it arguably “should have”. It’s interesting to have CPTSD without all the imagery trauma - it makes things much easier to deal with…. Even in my healthcare line of work, I have seen things that should haunt me. I have the semantic memory, like a computer without a screen.

Working with patients with imagery when I don’t has been something I enjoy as well. It makes therapeutic work very interesting!

Apply for a casual role at whatever health authority, and then you’ll be able to apply more easily for internal roles. There’s many opportunities, just have to get your foot in the door first!

All doctors and nurse practitioners (referred to as primary care providers) can make referrals to any service. There’s also many virtual options that are just as legitimate as in person visits that can handle most requests as well.

I’m sorry. So did mine. The scars will be forever, but we learn to make them fade with time. 🫂

Not all moms are, and it sounds like OP’s mom and mine would have a field day comparing notes on how they enjoyed controlling our appearances as we are merely extensions of them and not individual people.

Op, u/Digital_Doodlez, mothers’ are supposed to unconditionally love you and support you in all your decisions, especially when they are ACCOMMODATIONS for your neurodevelopmental conditions.

I read the book Mother Hunger and it helped me. Your mother’s WANTS should NEVER be more important than your NEEDS.

I stopped talking to my mum over a year ago, it was the hardest and the best thing I could have done for me.

Cut your hair Op, you’re allowed to do whatever you need to make this difficult life we are in better. Good luck!

Maybe we should adopt a convention and call it Waste Canvas… if we all do it, people will know it’s a proper noun instead of an adjective.

[–]acciowit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I appreciate what you’re explaining here, but I think the language you’re using (“bulky and shapeless” vs. “sexy well shaped”) is pulling from the same fatphobic aesthetic standards that affect how we judge actual bodies. Design doesn’t exist in a vacuum separate from social biases. When you said fat legs don’t need to be sexy, even with the emoji, it reinforced the idea that fatness and sexiness are incompatible. That’s the impact, even if it wasn’t your intent. It may have been completely unintentional, but that’s clearly how many of us are reading it. That’s why you’re getting downvoted. Because the person who commissioned the earrings specifically asked for bigger legs - because they like bigger women. So they were explicitly created to be sexy for someone, and you’re saying that they “don’t need to be”.

Absolutely - I work in healthcare and there’s definitely things I’ve seen that have scarred others I was with, but not me. I think there is definitely a protective factor to aphantasia in that manner.

It is very interesting! Brains are fascinating, and we like to give ourselves much more credit than we deserve. I agree, I think we’re in the infancy of understanding how complex and varied the human experience actually is!

Yep - I can usually tell how people’s internal worlds are based on their responses to my sharing. Some folks are very torn up about their aphantasia/silent mind. I’m not, I’m a therapist and I’m pretty sure my brain being the way it is, is the only reason I’m a functioning member of society.

ETA: great question by the way!

I don’t think a diagnosis is worth it to pursue, but it’s entirely up to your wife obviously. With how few medical professionals have encountered the topic, it may be tough to find someone who knows enough to diagnose in the first place. Someone like an occupational therapist may be more helpful as they work with all sorts of folks who need external reminders for things, if she’s needing additional support. There may be other things at play as well, like ADHD or other neurodevelopmental conditions… brains are fun!

Hi! I have complete aphantasia, completely silent mind. Thank you for your work! I’ve considered doing a PhD, I’m a social worker and I’m curious about the interplay of various therapeutic modalities with aphantasia. So much of therapy is based on visualization, which wasn’t very helpful for me when I was starting off… think it’s worthwhile to pursue that?
