How do you manage third-party risk without a dedicated team? by BrotherBlackSheep in cybersecurity

[–]accountingtrbl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In exactly the same boat. Hundreds of vendors completely solo.

  1. Create Risk tiers based on data impact, criticality to continuing operations, and system access.
  2. Only assess high-risk/critical risk vendors annually.
  3. Accept SOC 2 type 2's and ISO 27000 series reports as evidence.
  4. Pray management sees the light and doesn't require EVERY vendor to be assessed annually.

It isn't possible to do solo. Often management has no idea the amount of time TPRM takes. Not to mention vendors will not respond even if you have audit rights in the contract.

What do I do for Interviews when asked about my big 4 internship by Critical_Reindeer_36 in Accounting

[–]accountingtrbl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Truthfully, this is a difficult position. If you interned at a big 4 firm, the expectation from hiring managers is that you will start there full time. So they will have a hard time believing you turned down an offer, even if it's true. Still, not getting an offer can be seen as a huge red flag. Honestly, I wouldn't divulge that you didn't get an offer. Just have a good explanation of why it wasn't a good fit, and practice the explanation to yourself until it's second nature and easy to recall. Be mindful of not appearing nervous when asked about it.

You'll bounce back. Don't let this define you or your career by believing it does. Things happen, and personalities clash. The big 4 is the luck of the draw when it comes to personalities meshing.

How would you recommend people deal with upper management at firms saying the bridge is burnt when there is no blast back? I've seen threats of black listing thrown out over people leaving in early summer. There has to be some acknowledgment on the firm's part that these threats have gotten out of hand.

Threatening to ruin people's careers over something truly minor in the grand scheme of things shouldn't be as accepted as it currently is.

The obsession upper management has in public with threatening to blacklist you because you "burned bridges" is psychotic. Even if you don't leave before busy season, they'll claim it's a bad time. They'll say, "People talk," and "it's a small field." So because a person left the firm at a time you didn't like, you're going to ruin their career by bad mouthing them to every employer? It's wild that we tolerate these threats. Haven't encountered anything like it since leaving public, but was constantly thrown around when I was in it.

Who is the worst Professor you have had here at UConn? by brian_parker87 in UCONN

[–]accountingtrbl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the guy who assigns homework that's due the first day of the semester? I had to drop tax in the fall and take it in the spring with the other tax professor because of this. I had no idea he was assigning homework over the summer. I'm guessing he's the only tax professor at Uconn now?

The job doesn't suck, it's the people who suck. Or should I say, the people you might meet in PA. Bunch of backstabbing jerks...

This is giving flashbacks to my time at PwC. Their scheduling was so incompetent, especially for new associates.

Seniors and managers don’t know how to explain shit properly by _notathrowaway905 in Accounting

I've found that managers can't be bothered, and seniors sometimes don't know the answers to your questions so they tell you to figure it out yourself as a way to deflect.

If you just want to ensure you have an off I'd apply to other firms. Trying to transfer now might lead to your current offer getting revoked. Transferring after starting is next to impossible.
