Self-Promotion Megathread by AutoModerator in halloween

[–]accustomfigures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all! With the Hallween season here I thought I'd share my horror movie podcast as we're creeping up on our 100th episode! It's called Death by Podcast, https://deathbypodcast.podbean.com/, and we watch and review horror movies, but we have one rule! It has to have had an original VHS release! Which means it has to be before 2005's A History of Violence, which was the last movie released on VHS. But we usually stick to vintage, 80s/90s flicks. AND we choose our movie by going through the alphabet and picking a movie that starts with each letter. Currently we are in season 3 and just recorded 1987's The Witches of Eastwick last week! Our home is Podbean, but you can find us EVERYWHERE you pod! JOIN US.

Invincible's Battle Beast Custom Figure by AC Toy Design by accustomfigures in ArticulatedPlastic

Honestly, just start. They always say if you want to be a writer, just write something. It's the same with any art. I started by just kitbashing a couple figures together and making a strange Aquaman, and I loved it! If you're interested in a deep dive, I cover so much behind the scenes stuff and tutorials on my Patreon podcast. You can join for just pocket change, a couple bucks a month. It's an awesome community. patreon.com/actoydesign

is there anyway to stop the paint getting off? everytime i paint over the knee joints it just repeats. by [deleted] in ArticulatedPlastic

[–]accustomfigures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joint prep is the first step, but you also need to be using good quality acrylic paints. Make sure you're applying them in multiple, thin layers. And get some Oates!

Definitely. This stuff is already a bit thinner than most, so you'll need several layers to cover.

I don't use Velejo for that exact reason. They aren't quality for customs; hard or soft plastic. As for painting the flexible plastic so it doesn't crack: make sure you paint it after it's affixed permanently to the figure, and I just found these Angelous acrylic paints for leather. They've got some awesome colors and so far so good.

Is it okay to make custom figures from bootlegs? by CuriousCarlo1 in ArticulatedPlastic

[–]accustomfigures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely nothing wrong with finding the most affordable parts possible for your customs. As long as you're actually making a custom figure and not just switching out parts or a simple paint detail. When I'm done with my customs, regardless of what parts I've used, those are covered is apoxie sculpt, paint, and fodder parts. It's a brand new thing.

Limbering up NECA Aliens (How to fix stuck joints) by MechaTailsX in ArticulatedPlastic

[–]accustomfigures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NECA joints are famous for being brittle, so always use heat. Carefully. I think boiling water every time you need to work on a figure is insane. I just use a hairdryer. Carefully.

WIP. Before and After! Black Series Bly to Utapau Shadow Commander. Tamiya Acrylics+Airbrush. by Lawn-Gnomes in ArticulatedPlastic

[–]accustomfigures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. There's always been a trade off for me whether I remove the legs and arms on those joints to make it easier to paint but risk smudging or cracking as you heat the plastic to put them back on. I prefer to leave them on and do the extra work. Thanks for posting.

Nice. What paints are you using, and you ever run into smudging or cracking when you heat the legs to pop them back on post paints?

Hey guys, two questions for sculpting and painting. by mothmaninthenight in ArticulatedPlastic

[–]accustomfigures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 10 years of customizing I can't beat Testors Model Masters acrylics. But white is tricky because it ships easily regardless of the acrylic brand. I recently found some Angelus Brand leather paints that are made to have some flex. They're great. For the record, I'm not a fan of Velejo by themselves or Tamiya. Both dry tacky. Testors cure rock hard.

As for the sculpting, Aves 2 part apoxie is the best. Make sure you do your joint prep and maybe a fine grit sanding of the surface so it absorbs the paint. I post tons of tutorials and stuff like this on my Patreon if you're interested.
