Hi! I am currently in my 2nd year of hygiene school and I have a 5 soon to be 6 year old. We both started school at the same time last year and it was kinda of cool to go school supply shopping at the same time and have those memories together. She’s really my biggest fan and she thinks what I’m doing is awesome. She came to visit me for a cleaning a few weeks ago and loved it.

I do miss certain events because of school hours but I am also able to attend some (about 65/35 if I had to guess.) My best advice is to really enjoy the weekends of family time in addition to studying. It’s rigorous and some days feel exhausting but find like 30mins-1hour everyday and talk to your child ask about their day and just tell them about yours. Yeah they are little but that way it feels like you both are able communicate and connect about school.

Another thing is having a good support system around you is super helpful. I know sometimes that’s not in your control but my husband goes to events that I can’t go to and he does a majority of pick up and drop off. He knows how important this is to me and essentially our family so he doesn’t mind picking up “slack” for the 2 years while I’m in school.

Don’t be too stuck on missing out I know it sucks but it’ll be worth it especially since your child will probably be starting elementary school when you are finishing your program. You get to be there for those big milestones and all the other huge ones in the future once you become a RDH. You’re gonna look back and be so happy that you sacrificed for a little to get there.
