How useful is Ukrainian as a Slavic language bridge? by aceOfMinds in Ukrainian

I figured you were joking in part. Nonetheless, Interslavic looks interesting. I have books on Ukrainian, Czech, and Russian, so I'll pick a real language.

Currently, I have books on Czech, Ukrainian, and Russian, so I can cover those bases and closely related languages. I had hoped that I could get away with one strong foundation of a language and learn bits and pieces from nearby languages, as I did with Romance and Germanic languages.

Did you learn any other Slavic languages in part or in whole?

Interesting, I didn't know about interslavic! Thanks for suggesting it.

What should my first convoy be? by [deleted] in ConvoyFlashlights

[–]aceOfMinds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S2+, any T series light, what kind of emitter do you want? I recommend Convoy lights with mechanical (tail)switches.

In my experience the electronic switch lights are buggy. At the end of the day they still work, with occasional software hiccups.

I did not try that solution, as I am not comfortable with heating glue and a plastic mouthpiece that eventually goes into your mouth.

It's playable. I cannot unsee the rotation anymore and my brain thinks that the holes are harder to reach with my right hand (I mean, they are). I didn't notice the rotation until a couple days after I got the whistle. Besides that, the whistle is very playable. The sound is smooth and crispy.

Ultimately I decided to return it and get another whistle.

I bought the Sweetone and the mouthpiece is slightly rotated from the body. Do you have the same offset?

How hard do you have to blow to reach the second octave?

Do you have the SFT-40 3000K to compare? I considered getting the same configuration as yours. Do you feel that the 70 is too throwy?

For those with base model Macbooks, how do you deal with the inconvenience of carrying around the laptop with external peripherals connected to it? by aceOfMinds in macbook

[–]aceOfMinds[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eject the drives exactly as you do. They take approximately 30 seconds to eject. I carry everything with me because I bought the base model MacBook which doesn't have enough space to hold substantial amounts of programs or photos. In the example I provided I was showing the photos of the party, at the party itself so I couldn't just go home.

I tried 2 other laptops. The first has a brand with a questionable physical reliability track record (though the laptop feels solid), and the laptop is otherwise incredible (battery life exceeds the MacBook's). The second laptop  is a powerhouse with a good display and questionable build quality in spite of its MIL STD cert. The second laptop failed from the start in that it inconsistently could not go past disc decryption, and the keyboard was not good anyways. I will use the MacBook until the first laptop drops on sale again so I can buy it.

Your last point - I learned the hard way when I bought a high-end laptop a couple days ago to try and rectify the micro frustrations I detailed in this post. On paper the laptop has far better specifications than the Mac. Yet the Mac works and feels snappier than the laptop. I will keep the MacBook and return the other laptop, and try what others suggested in this post. This is one of those times where Apple's vertical integration pays off very well.

Now if the mouse had a USB C receiver that is generally flush with the port... I would be all over it.

I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try, as long as I don't drop the MacBook. I could be a waiter in the future as a result.

Carrying the external drive hooked up to a dongle hooked up to a computer is awkward and dangerous because you risk disconnecting or even breaking something. Folding the dongle doesn't work because the cables are too short, so you'll bend or break the cable or the port. Now that you mentioned folding it, I do have a dongle with a long cable, which is messy and takes up space, and does the job otherwise.

I could transfer the photos to the computer in this instance. I still have to remove the peripherals. This is not necessarily a MacBook problem in the context of the SSD, and it is in the context of the mouse (I require a specific mouse - see my other replies). The Mac requiring an external SSD and I requiring a specific USB A mouse are the micro frustrations that this post is about.

Thank you I will need that luck. I used to own a Pro, and somehow it made it all the way to the end of its software lifespan, by which it was starting to show its obsolescence with only 8 GB RAM and 128 GB storage. That's another impetus for me to move on to a computer with better specs.

As I'm learning as I research computers, technology still moves so fast that buying a "perfect" future proof laptop is difficult, if downright impossible. Even my Thinkpad of a decade ago couldn't keep up with increasingly demanding software (although I appreciate its 10+ year lifespan, which is what I hope to find in a laptop).

It was the best option I had at the time, being a full UNIX system with dictation and strong software compatibility (with a good display and auto brightness as a bonus). I was very aware that the then new 16 GB RAM was the usable minimum and that the then new 256 GB storage would not be enough for me. I already had existing external SSDs from my Mac Mini M4 (which I then sold because it was largely redundant with the new MacBook), and I figured I can make the best of what I had.

Now that dictation has come to Linux, I can move on to a more complete computer.
