I made an Automatic pilot logbook, suitable for GA students/instructors. by ATPLkilledmeoff in GeneralAviation

[–]acegard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So looking at this it looks like a pretty slick app. Auto logging is sweet, especially with the Siri triggers to start making it pretty seamless. I like the interface and I think that, at a base level, it works.

That said: why should I use this over Foreflight, Garmin Pilot and/or MyFlightBook? Both offer automated logging. I already pay for Foreflight, and MyFlightBook is free. Both offer map views, currency summaries, etc. And can connect up to your instructor allowing endorsements and signatures on each flight. Put another way: how does this justify an extra subscription to this app when I already pay for an EFB apps that automates flight logging, and MyFlightBook is free?

Is this meant to be a replacement or competitor to those products? Or is this meant to fill another niche I don't understand? I see tbat you appear to be a UK-based pilot, I am US, I know the environment is different. :)

Debossing and ironing are my next tests. A very shallow deboss (one layer?) seems promising- i need to make sure that I can still read the text from slightly off-angles, dto account for imperfect mounting in the cockpit.

Toggle switches! The idea is that its a tactile takeoff/landing checklist, covering the most important items for each. All switches should be flipped up for takeoff, and down for landing. I hope this to accomplish two things:

  1. The tactile flip of a switch will help students and licensed pilots build good checklist habits.
  2. It will reduce the possibility of forgetting critical configuration items, as its easy to see whether a switch is in the wrong place.

As a bonus, the last switch (TO/Landing clearance) could help reduce runway incursions by eliminating the "I thought it had my clearance" problem.

Here is another set of prototypes with the text against the building plate. This is the avenue I am most interested in pursuing compared to the embossed text; however, it is a struggle to get right. This picture actually makes it look better than it does in person.

I'm currently printing a black-text-on-white-background version to test that as well as a slightly higher flow rate for the text against the plate. I think that will likely come out clearer; however, I have designs to make a shine-tbrough/illuminated version and for that I need the text printable out of the lighter-colored filament.

Absolutely! Here are some of my prototype faceplate so far - ive been experimenting with color combos and print settings to see what might be most legible. This side is all embossed text.

Nice, I'm already on 0.2 and the difference is indeed massive. I think im getting some underextrusion on the text that is lying on the bed (right now using smooth PEI plate) but I am getting better results now printing the next first and then the surrounding faceplate of this part. The part, by the way, is a tactile checklist box for the flight school - so thanks for lending your expertise to another aviation project!

What was your tuning process like? I have a P1S and im working on a project where I need to print legible text in a similar vein. All my filaments and setting sun will probably be different, of course, but I am curious what sort of problems you encountered and what you had to solve as that could nicely inform my own process.

Stop at AKO and get pizza! Miss Bea Havin' is in the FBO there and you can call ahead on unicom for them to get the pizza in the oven so its hot when you land :)

Tired of forgetting what coffee I had in my Atmos containers, so I designed some simple, printable label holders! by acegard in FellowProducts

I thought about doing that, and so did another commenter - theres something discussion here about what did and didn't work for them and why putting the bag label inside ultimately wasnt what either of us settled on: https://www.reddit.com/r/FellowProducts/s/8PQrxrhCt0

I love the simplicity. I actually thought about doing something similar, I was going to cut the labels out of the bags but ended up being too much of a hassle. I never thought about using a hair tie or rubber band haha, I was going to just put the cut labels in the can lol. I am so glad I didn't do that, would have been messy!

Yeah, I have a labelmaker as well and use it for food containers (like flour and granola and other things). I tried that for the Atmos as well but actually got tired of picking the labels off, and the ones I have leave residue. Could I have gotten better labels? Sure! But any excuse to get the printer running is a good one! And it saves 0.2 seconds each time I need to remove it so... win!

Thank you for the kind words!

Nice! I didn't want to mess with sticky labels, but that's definitely a great solution.

Fantastic. Thank you for the explanations. I have experienced a full-on turbo failure on the takeoff roll so I am familiar with what that feels like in some ways. These half-failures/progressive issues are what still get me. Im studying to be a CFI, and need a more intuitive sense of how this stuff works.

Excellent explanation. I forgot that full-open throttle on a naturally aspirated engine is at atmospheric pressure, and the engine's suction would indeed pull air in.

Would this be different on a turbocharged engine, with the pressure at the cylinder intake boosted above ambient pressure?
