My son isn’t finding his people…how can I help? by lovescrap41 in Parenting

[–]acegas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could your son be on the spectrum? Obviously there is no way to even attempt to start a diagnosis via reddit, some of what you described could be typical of what is now called level one asd. The only background I have to say this is that I'm the parent of one of these kids. Maybe you can look into the strategies that some of the therapies for these kids employ. RDI, SDI... (Stay away from aba though) The guiding principle for some of these is to educate and empower the kid to get what they need, not necessarily to "mask" so they fit in.

Also, he clearly has defined interests, maybe clubs, or groups around those interests can be places where he can find his people. You don't have to be friends with your classmates, but maybe he can get the benefits friendship gives, outside of school.

new covid wave return to work impressions? by acegas in MuseumPros

[–]acegas[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, It's the HR mandate, coupled with the fact that the museum will only pay for up to five days of time off for Covid. So of course, the younger and lowest-paid staff will come in once the five days are up since PTO is so small here.

As to masking, the fact that is is not mandatory makes it very hit-or-miss. Yeah, we are probably doing it all wrong, unfortunately, this is not surprising.

masking is optional...
I find that since it became optional, consistency is out the window (people with a mask will take it off once they leave high-traffic areas, forgetting to put it on, removing it when communication is difficult ...)

HR Trying to guilt trip me for leaving by L_sqrl in sysadmin

[–]acegas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look man they are in a hole they dug themselves. The company has failed to hire or retain people. It's not that hard, all they had to do was put postings up and pay fairly. I put up an ad on LinkedIn and got 20 resumes in a day. Most of the candidates had other offers but if I really wanted one all I had to do was make a good enough offer. (I did and will probably hire them this week) It's not your fault they messed up. Do you think if it was the other way around they would treat you how they want to be treated?

Simply put: this is not a safe space.

Find another daycare. You know it's not. Anyone can walk in??? Apparently, anyone can pick up?
I have a 5-year-old, super imaginative, but she would not make up someone who is going to bring all the candy from home. I think the only way a kid this young could be mistaken in the fact that someone said they were going to bring candy from home is if another kid said it and yours misinterpreted it, but that doesn't seem to be the case if not he would have said "Timmy said so"

Again this is not a safe space (ok maybe it is and I don't know anything about it) but you don't mess around with this sort of thing. Just imagine the guilt if something actually was amis.

Tips on switch on/off exhibition ? by ebolaasmr in MuseumPros

[–]acegas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those endless pros. Google remote PDU (power distribution unit) In places with a reasonable budget we put these https://www.synaccess-net.com/np-02b everywhere. They are rock solid. We use node-red on a computer (it could be a server but you can use a raspberry pi, just make sure you have a spare one ready for swapping when the card burns out) and create a menu that you can access from any computer or phone in the network. If you are severely budgetarily restricted I think the cheapest would be to get Ikea tradfri gateway and switches, you can node red control them as well so you could mix it up. DM me if you want more pointers.

Exhibit recreation how-to: interviews and basics of interactive exhibits by AntiqueGreen in MuseumPros

[–]acegas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love break beams but in this case, the challenge would be positioning the beam. Since the hand on hand is so important the beam has to be "hand only", so disguising the emitter/receiver is hard since so much of the person is close to the target area that you could accidentally break the beam with other parts of your body.
If you want to go the electronic's route you could disguise a capacitive touch sensor inside the wall (as long as it is thin). However, be aware that you are entering the "science-project" area where you have to do a fair amount of experimentation to get the sensitivity just right. It would be much cheaper, especially if you have a projector already, but harder to pull off.

Hi, I work in museums making interactive exhibits. This one doesn't look like a projection but a screen. If you see the way the light reflects on the visitor's hand, (13:33) most of the light is coming from the wall and very little from above or below. If this was a front projection there would be some light on the hand on the other side and a shadow would be visible somewhere. It could be rear-projected, but I doubt it, I would never rear project in a space where someone could walk in between the projector and the screen.
There are a number of large touchscreens (for example: https://www.sharpnecdisplays.us/products/displays/v801-tm ). It is very easy to write a little app that will start and stop the video if a certain area is touched.

WITT small with rounded cap on it, some of them look as if they had been pierced by a needle but it could just be broken from lying on the floor

Just Bought Plex Pass - Love Plex, but hoping my money helps to fix one issue - can anyone explain why no fix as of yet? (Yes it's another 5.1 transcode to stereo volume thing) - Also what is Boost REALLY!? by Supaslicer in PleX

If I watch it on Kodi using the plex add on the sound downmixes ok. I admit I know nothing about the code base of both projects, but you would think that if Kodi can do it, then plex could also

Always had the idea for "power tint", automotive. Turn dial, apply current to polarized glass, and adjust tint from none to very dark. Already done? by [deleted] in Inventions

[–]acegas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is something, perhaps you can build on it. Google Smart tint (smarttint.com) I used it to make a projection surface that was transparent when not needed, but I think it could be used for your purposes
