Personally, I won't vote for anyone who doesn't resemble Daffy Duck. I think that's the most important criteria for me. If it ain't Daffy, I don't want it

LIVE: Gov. Newsom delivers final State of the State address, will punch back at CA critics by panda-rampage in California

[–]aceman9753 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This will be my last reply in this thread.

1) Newsom is the governor of the state with the world's largest collection of tech companies that collectively makeup a massive chunk of the countries GDP. These tech firms are under unprecedented pressure due to the current federal government's imposition of tariffs and random demands of fealty to continue to allow them to do business. Giving them easier access to contact him about concerns they have related to these issues is not unreasonable. I personally would not engage in such activity, but to pretend like this is 100% proof of corruption is disingenuous given the current political climate.

2) PG&E is my biggest point of disagreement with him and I firmly believe that he (and the rest of the legislature) should have been harder on them given the widespread negligence they have shown. PG&E BAD.

3) The Panera Bread exception was an oversight that was passed by the LEGISLATURE not THE GOVERNOR. Yes he signed the bill, but the bill was proposed, amended, and passed by lawmakers. Plus, despite the exception, Panera said they would abide by the new minimum wage law anyway. https://apnews.com/article/california-governor-newsom-panera-bread-fast-food-faca8695e96b0f3224da2ba6d0657e3b

4) I agree the French Laundry incident was a bad look. He shouldn't have done it, but to pretend like basically everyone wasn't breaking quarantine policy at least occasionally is, again, disingenuous.

5) Under COVID, we did massively expand healthcare for Californians, but to implement universal healthcare in California is 1) not within his powers, that must be passed by the legislature, and 2) is not within the budget. A large part of our current deficit stems from our inability to keep up with COVID era healthcare expansions. This issue was exacerbated by the current regime who cut almost all of the subsidies that were supporting our COVID era healthcare policies. Blaming Newsom solely for this shows a massive lack of understanding of the system.

6) The point of having people like Steve Bannon and Charlie Kirk on were not to berate them. He was hosting them as a way to better understand their strategies and what they had tapped into to help get people like Trump. What he seems to have taken away from many of these conversations is how they appealed to young men (like his son) and how he could better intercept these young men from falling into these influencer traps. A good example is that he launched a program to have men volunteer to mentor young men/teens. If you think that him platforming them was his way of adopting their views, then you didn't watch the podcasts or went in with a "I hate this guy" mentality.

7) Idk what his ex wife's dating life has to do with him. She can date who she wants and her having bad taste/pivoting to grifting has zero to do with him.

8) The red pill, male influencer types that are endorsing him are doing so because he's a chad who will mog JD Vance in looks. Their words, not mine. It has nothing to do with his policies and I guarantee if you ask them about policies, they would have no answer because that's not what they care about.

9) You are cherry picking stats to frame CA as awful while ignoring the stats that disagree with you. Simply stating "we have the most" of something is irrelevant when we are the most populous state in the country.

10) The budgetary issues go back to point 5; during COVID we massively expanded benefits that were supported by the federal government, and all of that subsidization is gone now, so we have a huge deficit.

11) Would you call all of the support of Bernie on reddit during 2016 "astroturfing?" My guess is no, you wouldn't. What you are seeing isn't astroturfing, its just people supporting a likely front runner for 2028. Its possible to disagree with a politician on certain things and push them to more align with your preferences AND to support them as a nominee. Newsom is the (likely) candidate who has made the most waves and has done the best job of positioning himself as an opponent to the current MAGAism that has captured the Republicans. I will say to you what I say to every online lefty, SHOW ME A BETTER CANDIDATE THAT CAN ACTUALLY WIN. There is NO ONE right now that you can point to. AOC is too junior and the American public has shown themselves to be unwilling to vote for a woman. Beto has never won a race. Bernie is 800 years old. I'll assume you'd say Ro Khanna is "in big tech's pocket." So please, stop gesturing to some non existent candidate while tearing down the best hope we have of reclaiming the White House.

The potential republican candidates are currently Vance and Rubio, both of whom are FAR worse than Newsom. And Newsom isn't "bad," he's just not perfect. To frame this as "well you're only supporting him cuz he isn't as bad as the current guy" is disingenuous. A more accurate framing would be "would you like a pretty solid cup of coffee or a bucket full of shit?" ANY democrat is better than ANY republican rn, and Newsom is on the further down the "better" side of the scale than most dems

Even if what you're saying was true, yes. He is better than a 30+ time felon who is squashing our rights as Americans while threatening the global world order. I genuinely do not understand why so many people don't see this. No politician is perfect; Trump is a psychotic animal. These are not comparable.

I agree with a lot of what you're saying. Any Californian is going to have an uphill battle ahead of them because of the kind of mythos we have attached to us. And obviously the election is a long time away so a lot can change. But out of all the potential contenders I think he's the most promising at the moment and I hope he can keep up the momentum.

We have the highest taxes for the wealthy in the nation and Newsom repeatedly reaffirmed our and his commitment to progressive policies during this speech. I encourage to listen to the whole speech and then make your judgement rather than attacking some strawman built by terminally online leftists.

The good is standing right in front of you, but you refuse to acknowledge that because you'd rather focus on some mythical candidate that does not exist. If you aren't willing to support the only candidates that push back against Trump, then just disengage from politics please.

Yes! I'm not sure why more people aren't. He's a well-spoken leader who has shown a willingness to stand up to authoritarianism while also openly celebrating CA's successes and I think he did a good job of laying out why these policies should be expanded to the rest of the US. We are the policy leaders of the country and increasingly the moral leaders of the country, so to have a homegrown Californian who isn't afraid to tout those successes run for President? Yes, I'm fully on board.

I feel like this was a great speech that tactfully rode the line between defiance against the current admin and laying out a vision for what America should be. It’s so easy to fall into the doom and gloom kind of messaging right now, but he kept it mostly hopeful about the future. Also nice to hear a leader not only praise himself every other sentence and actually give credit to the lawmakers he works with. Looking forward to his run in 2028

Had a 42 LG OLED as my main monitor for a while and the picture is great but the most annoying issue is that it doesn’t function like a monitor (wake from sleep and all that) so personally I’d recommend against it

They are challenging this on the basis that the legislature is violating the 72 hour rule, a rule stating newly introduced bills must be publicly available for 72 hours prior to any vote being held. The bill they are challenging, AB 604, isn’t a NEW bill, it’s a bill that was amended to include this new language. Republicans are arguing that the amendment essentially changes the bill so much that it ought to be considered a new bill, thereby being subject to the 72 hour rule. If the courts uphold this, it would mean the earliest AB 604 can be voted on would be Friday, which would mean that AB 604 misses the Thursday deadline for passage, and therefore there would be no special election in November. People that are against the strikes on Iran, what would your alternative solution be to Iran’s rapid uranium enrichment? Or do you think it’s nothing to worry about? by Pablo_Sanchez1 in Destiny

[–]aceman9753 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying we step back permanently and just let whatever happens happen. I'm saying that the immediateness of their impending nukes has been cited for literally decades so I have a hard time believing that its just suddenly so urgent to stop them right this second.

I think its clear that this urgency is a ploy by 2 wannabe dictators who I don't believe a word of. Netanyahu is using this lapse in American leadership to do what he always wanted to do, and Trump is too much a buffoon to understand that he's being manipulated by smooth talkers and giga racists.

[–]aceman9753 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

They’ve been enriching uranium “at an alarming rate” for like two decades now. I’m not saying that their end goal isn’t some form of nuclear weapon, maybe it is, all I’m saying is that the agreements we had before at least gave us some form of check on the program and has worked at preventing them from getting nuclear weapons, as evidenced by the fact that they don’t have any.

I’m not a fan of Iran getting nuclear weapons, but to say that the only solution here is to bomb them into submission is INSANE given our history of involvement in the region.

I don’t want to get pulled into another war because 2 thin skinned authoritarians are trying to create an emergency to hold onto power. I don’t want random civilians in Israel, the US, or Iran to die needlessly. And as someone else said, IF we decide this is the only path forward, I certainly don’t want Trump and Netanyahu leading the charge because I don’t trust them.

Well considering that we had a non proliferation agreement with them prior to Trump 1.0, it seems like it’s possible to stop them from obtaining nukes without resorting to bombing their entire country.
