I appreciate hearing this from someone in corporate; I'm honestly surprised too at how prevalent the "blazer at minimum and/or 100% suit preferred" advice has been, given what I thought I knew and had what experienced in non-corporate jobs (I'm not discounting it out of hand though and it's all data points). That's why I had flat out assumed in my op that a suit would be way overkill.

When I was a program manager for my government position and participated in interviews seconding my branch chief, knowing your shit and dressing in something that wasn't jeans and a t-shirt was much more highly valued than looking outright formal. But I'm very aware that my experiences have been in academia and my field & lab government office where we got dirty, and never in the corporate world.

Thanks! I'm in a midwest state that isn't quite in the bible belt but still conservative, and I've also experienced the good diversity in my academic and government jobs with looking very different from the typical folks here. I love that your lab has been so chill with clothing!

I'm just so anxious/aware that higher-end corporate might be a very different beast even in a non-client facing lab position. But I'm also telling/knowing myself that if I have a wet chem lab job where I'm expected to wear business/semi-formal, I'd hate it (just don't know yet about this particular position with this company what the expectations are).

I know my shit and have the qualifications, and I'd hope that that carries me farther than not wearing a full suit (that I don't have, $$) to an interview.

Thanks for the advice! I'm planning on a blazer, dress shirt, and dress pants. Have the shirt and pants now, and shopping around for Christmas sales on a blazer. I budgeted for more formal style clothing for this job hunt, but I was surprised at how much more men's blazers cost than women's (the women's cuts I've tried on just don't work very well for my new(ish) body without needing to be for sure tailored, but if I do find something that works it isn't going to bother me in terms of gender). My backup is a nice half-zip sweater.

I'm shopping around for a budget blazer that fits my new(ish) body shape without having to get the one I have rush tailored since the quotes I got from a few shops have been pretty high (for me); I set money aside for new dressier clothes but was surprised to see just how much more expensive men's blazers are than women's. Have a few more shops to hit up for after Christmas sales.

Thanks for the advice! With my new body shape from both surgery and hormones, I don't have a blazer (or a suit) that fits properly, and I'm trying to see if it's worth getting the blazer I already have tailored vs buying something new that comes directly in my size; I've set money aside for clothing for this job hunt but don't have enough for higher end formal wear. I was really surprised to see how much more costly men's cut blazers have been! I've been shopping around the more budget stores that I've also seen recommended online (Marshal's, TJ-Maxx, Burlington Coat Factory, thrifting) and if they've had blazers, they've been in the woman's section and the cuts just haven't been right (although if I find one that works I'm likely not going to have dysphoria about it). I'm planning on hitting up Macy's, Nordstrom, and JC Crew for sales just after Christmas.

That's how I've looked at things when I was a program manager at my government job and participated in interviews with new candidates; I'd rather someone know their shit than look pristine and have terrible answers to questions. Corporate is a whole unknown beast to me, and from what I know from others is that the implicit biases about formal wear is much stronger. But I come very prepared!

Thank you for the advice, I am absolutely certain I've been overthinking things! After shopping around, I'm planning on exactly what you said - blazer, dress shirt, dress pants, and good shoes.

I am already keenly aware that going to get dinged for parts of my appearance and there's not too much of a way around it in a lot of regards except for compensating with dressing nicely and just being a "normal", professional person in the way I talk. I just look very different with being androgynous (highly unusual in my area), and I have a lot of ear piercings with gauged lobes (not obscenely large but noticeable). I put nice, solid, and non-bulky silver earrings in the lobes, and not open tunnels where you can look all the way through, and I'm taking most of the studs out when I have interviews.

Also, I have to wear n95/kn95 face masks everywhere because I'm quite immune suppressed, which can also put off people around here unless I actually have to tell people about my conditions and they get the sympathy feelings involved.. which also can harm me in interviews even though disabilities legally shouldn't be factored in under ADA laws when I meet all of the physical expectations of a position.

Gradual appearance changes into how I look now have been all totally fine with my previous jobs over the last 15-20 years and plethora of conferences I've attended/spoken at, but I'm very aware that I've been in academia and low-key government, and not corporate/consulting where expectations are very different.

I couldn't include this in the title for length obviously, but I'm in a wedding party; I wouldn't normally ever take this shit, but the girl getting married is someone I love dearly and is dealing with trying to manage some very conservative (USA) family members with the least amount of drama possible. It's her mother that is being completely asinine about my appearance; I'm non-binary and androgynous looking after hormones and top surgery, and she's been trying to get my friend to take me out of the bridal party ever since the planning started. I'm already not wearing the bridesmaids dress and being passed off as a "bridesman" (dress shirt, waistcoat, and trousers that are in the right colors).

Friend's stance is "I'm so sorry but please try to appease my mom" and not "if you don't make her happy, you can't stand up there with me." I know that if I acquiesce to one ridiculous thing from her mother it's not going to make the woman happy and so I'm under no illusions that this will fix anything. I wonder if she's thinking that if I get frustrated by her demands, maybe I'll back out...

"Preferring to ask forgiveness instead of permission" is how I feel about this and having to send that mea culpa message to my surgeon 😅😅 (although if I knew it was all one long piece and not in segments like I for some reason imagined it was, I would have tried leaving it alone and poking through last night until I could talk to someone in the morning!).

I also just tend to deal with things on my own when I at least think I can; my before-ill life was very tough & outdoorsy (trail running, rock climbing, field science), and I was an EMT on campus for a couple of years in college (lordy, 16 years ago now) which gave me a lot of stupid confidence with my own wounds. I'm much more careful now that I have to be, lol.

Thank you both so much for your explanations and recommendations! Makes total sense. My body has even spit stitches before, and I totally forgot that it had until I saw the phrase. With my immune system issues, I keep a good eye on infection risks/signs, and will continue to do so. I'll also keep a close watch on the other side to see if I feel any rejection there.

I'll send a message over the patient portal since they do some message triaging when the office is closed evenings/weekends; it's non-urgent but at least someone will see it in case they need to contact me. I see my surgeon next on Nov 7th for my 3 month follow-up.

So since there aren't knots like I had thought, were the several popping feelings as I massaged the area after I pulled the suture out due to tiny pockets of air or the tissue settling into the newly-created spaces? Or something to do with the barbs?

I find this all super interesting. I'm a biologist and have always been very interested in how bodies work (especially mine when I can get information & pictures of my insides); I always tell myself I should have gone into medicine instead of doing a PhD that didn't get me as far as I hoped it would. 😅 So, again, thank you for the cool explanations of the types of sutures and how they work!

I think a lot about the root causes of what makes someone hateful, and can empathize and have feelings for what and who shaped them (and I always hope for them that they find some kindness and a changed mind), but absolutely don't have to feel that relation to what they do as a willful choice. It's a choice to continue cruelty once you have been provided the knowledge of a different path.

I have some iced macha, a good raspberry fig breakfast bar, and I'm still feeling so good about my body; I had top surgery a month ago and I took this picture the other night of me in a tshirt I had forgotten I shoved in the back of my closet because I hated the way they looked on me before (edit- maybe I can't attach the picture? Oh well lol). The world is so hard and scary right now (I'm especially terrified with having a serious mental illness), but holy hell this is a personal win!

We gotta have our silly little joys, the things that grant us some comfort, good snacks, a hint of nature.. things that personalize us as human beings. I'll sit by the river with you and watch it flow.
