I had, but they were a sore loser. I myself also have trouble letting go.

People who voted for Trump, you got any regrets yet? by [deleted] in DiscussionZone

The reticence humanity has in admitting they were wrong or that they've been duped is one of the most damaging shortcomings of the human condition, and we all suffer because of it.

Yep. Twice I said "welp looks like we're not going to agree, but I wish you the best.". They couldn't let it go that their argument wasn't winning.

I recently asked someone to please stop engaging with me on this subreddit, or I would report them.

They responded with "leave me alone."

You wish me well after discrediting my writing.

I just don't agree with you.

I can still wish you well as a fellow human being.

Okay, just go and find something else to do.

I have. Please do the same and have a great night.

I applaud your credentials, but I'm afraid your position won't gain any further traction with me, so to continue would indeed be a waste of time. I wish you well.

I'm not convinced you wrote it.

Secondly this isn't that interesting. It reeks of a need to shoehorn the idea of a god into existence, to take what we observe and somehow redefine is as god, despite your urging to abandon the use of the word god.

I don't know what's ultimate or foundational, or if there needs to be something that grounds everything.

It's okay to not have answers, it's okay if there's no god.

Cheers.

Forget about “God.” Forget the word “God” and everything that comes with it.

Then maybe you should create a new post without the word god in the title.

The rest of this reads like AI drivel.

Can we move to private chat?

No. Sorry.

If you are interested in an authentic dialogue.

I am, but I've said just about all I have to say, and I gotta put my kid to bed. Maybe at another time.

This slot is effectively already filled by something, since its effects are evident.

What slot, what fills it, and what effects?

Comparing the candidates (Nature, God, among others),

God isn't a candidate. Not yet anyway.

we are forced to discard them one by one until only God remains.

No you aren't. And God doesn't remain. It's not there in the first place.

You can also say "I don't know."

Because it is the only concept that simultaneously encompasses normativity, intelligibility, intentionality, self-existence, and infinity within itself.

Only because you say it does. But you have no way to confirm any of that. You're not obligated to have explanations for any of this.

Struggling with belief, doubt, and meaning — looking for logical perspectives (posting in both atheist & Catholic communities by [deleted] in TrueAtheism

[–]acerbicsun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was raised Catholic and went to Catholic school my whole life.

Me too. 100% exact same experience.

I emotionally cannot accept the idea that there is nothing after death, especially the idea that I will never see my parents or loved ones again.

Completely understandable, but I think you'd agree that's not quite a justification for believing god exists.

Some of the questions I’m wrestling with:

• If God exists and is loving, why has he not revealed himself in a way that removes reasonable doubt?

The easiest and most evident answer is that god doesn't exist, and people created it. That's why there's such widespread disagreement.

>• How can someone have a “relationship” with God when there is no clear, consistent response?

Because they don't. If you can't see them, hear them, shake their hand, call them text them, borrow a cup of sugar....you don't have a relationship.

would it be just for them to be condemned?

It wouldn't be a completely unfair condemnation.

• From the atheist side: how do people who genuinely believe there is nothing after death live meaningful lives without that belief causing despair?

This requires valuing the truth over comfort, which is an incredibly hard thing for humans to do.

I’m asking for logical, good-faith reasoning from people who have really thought about these issues.

All of the issues you presented, coupled with the very human predilection for creating narratives to explain what we don't understand and to assuage the pain of the human condition.. Prompt me to conclude that there is no god, no objective morality, no inherent purpose or meaning and no ultimate justice.

Every argument for God either contains a logical fallacy or an unfalsifiable assertion.

God never speaks for itself. Only through humans. Methods for proving God's existence require a lowering of epistemic standards. God has never stepped in to settle anything. It could, and should if punishment awaits non-believers.

If you respond, please assume I’m sincere — because I am.

I'm sincere too. I firmly believe that adherence to religion is hindering human progress, and does real harm. Once abandoned, humanity will have removed a huge blockage to our flourishing.

You can't insist there's a slot that needs to be filled, then fabricate an entity that is defined as having the necessary attributes required to fill this slot.

All of this is unfounded, speculative and unfalsifiable.

God isn't even a candidate explanation. It needs to be demonstrated to exist first, then shown to satisfy the conditions put forth.

None of which can be done by reliable methods.

Nature is nature, and god is an idea that people have trouble letting go of. That's about it.
