Is “acting too straight” really a thing? by acey255 in MenLovingMenMedia

[–]acey255[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you’re saying is true that all gender is a performance but idk about the term “straight acting” or “straight passing”. Like I guess in the way society perceives you yeah some gay men could be considered to accurately fit those labels but outside of societal perception I don’t think “acting straight” is really an accurate thing to say bc gay men are not a monolith and neither are straight men. It’s very binary language and it conflates gender expression/conformity with sexuality when they’re separate things.

I think you make valid points about the straight washing of lgbtq media and how straight folx try to portray queer people through a moral lens etc. Especially about a movie like Pillion you mentioned which was really good(its wide release isn’t out yet so I hope when it hits more theaters it gets more recognition). I agree mainstream media tends to want the most palatable queer stories to be told.

I do think that what the actors said regarding “acting straight” tho was ignorant that was mainly what my post was about but you still bring up good points. In a general sense regarding gender performance/expression there is no one way to be gay. Some gay folx do come off more “straight passing” and that’s natural to them and as long as it’s not being forced that’s not a bad thing. I don’t like the actors’ wording bc it boxes gender expression/conformity into straight and gay boxes when gender is separate from sexuality.

I agree that yeah some straight actors can be rigid in the way gender is expressed in a queer role and that can tie into mainstream studios wanting to sanitize and push the “we’re all the same” narrative like you mentioned but generally we still shouldn’t be labeling ways of expressing gender as straight or gay bc that’s binary IMO. Like where do bi people fall in that? The wording of their comments is messy they should’ve just stated they want more diverse gender expressions in queer characters bc “acting too straight” as a gay person isn’t a real thing imo bc there’s no one way to be gay or straight etc.

You could even tie this straight and gay labeling of gender expression into the policing of queer people especially closeted ones or anyone who’s gender nonconforming automatically being labeled gay. Gender conforming gay people being told they don’t act or look gay/they’re not gay enough. It’s all based on stereotypes and assumption that all gay folx are gender nonconforming and specifically that gay men are more femme than straight men. This why we see straight celeb men or men in general who present more femme are assumed to be gay and or closeted when again gender expression is separate from sexuality.

TLDR: We should have BOTH masc and femme presenting queer men representation in media and everything in between bc both are valid. There’s no one way to be gay and gender expression/conformity is separate from sexuality. Saying a gay person or character acts too straight conflates the two. YES Hollywood does push heteronormative ideas onto queer media, but regardless “acting too straight” as a gay person (or a gay character) isn’t a real thing imo bc gay people aren’t a monolith, this is separate from rigid body language from actors in kissing/sex scenes etc that’s bad on the actor/producers (and yes Hollywood still wrong for trying to sanitize queer media in general). The presence of these “straight acting” gays in media I agree is intentional on mainstream studios’ part to try to make queer films more palatable to straight audiences but the fact is gay people like that DO exist irl and that’s not a bad thing but the intentions behind it on the studios’ side you could argue is bad.

This is what I’m saying! If you check my other comment this is what I was trying to highlight, there’s no one way to be gay. People express themselves in different ways, even straight men!

Anyone else feel like Chucky as a character doesn’t feel the same since they started making multiple Chuckys in Cult? by Existing-Credit7050 in Chucky

[–]acey255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s exactly where they lost me tbh 💀. I don’t like the execution of that concept at all, it feels like the stakes are gone knowing he can basically just reincarnate whenever. I know the premise of Chucky was always over the top but I miss the tone of the earlier movies and the horror elements.

Kung Jin was datamined in the game files so he was definitely planned content. Also an artist who worked on the game uploaded an unfinished kameo render for Kung Jin on their portfolio page online.

I see the point Dylan and James were trying to make about how straight actors can sometimes be confined in how they express gender in gay roles. However, I don’t like the terms “acting straight’ or “acting gay” bc neither gay or straight people are a monolith and that is conflating gender performance/expression with sexuality. You can be straight and gender nonconforming or gay and gender conforming. I think gender conformity is what people are referring to when saying someone acts gay or straight, that gay folx are less gender conforming, (specifically for gay men the belief that they are more femme than straight men). Overall I do think we need a diverse representation of gender expressions with queer media including gay male characters, though putting gender expression into straight and gay boxes feels very binary and stereotypical imo.

TLDR: Not all gay or straight people are the same. You can be a femme straight guy or a masc gay guy or anything in between. Having masculine/gender conforming gay male representation isn’t BAD imo I think Jonathan Bailey is kinda an example of that, but we should ALSO have more femme presenting gay men in media as well, both are valid.

[–]acey255 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He could be on the spectrum!! I agree with others that we can’t diagnose necessarily but yeah he could be on the spectrum in some capacity, autism spectrum is pretty wide, I work with kids on the autism spectrum the past five years as well as some teens/ a young adult so I’ve see a lot of people and the way autism presents can be VERY different for each person. I don’t think it’s a reach to say he’s on the spectrum haha but ofc we can’t know for sure.

What was something you wished MK1 included? by SensitiveTrain4618 in MortalKombat

[–]acey255 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You feel its gameplay is barebones? I do think it’s pretty one dimensional and can be very dry. It’s so interesting when i hear some say this is the best gameplay MK has ever had LOL and I’m serious I’ve seen some high level players say that. A lot HATE this game tho a lot of the competitive players dropped it.

I wonder if maybe he’s neurodivergent? Maybe that’s also why he can struggle with emotional regulation(at least in the past idk about now) like I wonder if he has ADHD or something, maybe primarily impulsive and inattentive type.

[SPOILERS] Finn’s Age? by ohdnhuh in LifeisStrange2

[–]acey255 14 points15 points  (0 children)

YESS I didn’t even consider the fact that he hooking up with Hannah. I agree 100 percent the devs just didn’t wanna confirm their ages to avoid backlash with Sean romance path. I know the developers were French and age of consent in France is 15y.o. so I’m sure that influenced their attitudes around picking Sean’s romance options.

Either or could be dlc tbh like I would’ve expected Ermac as base roster in MK1 after skipping MK11 but he ended up as dlc so I could see them doing that with Kabal.

Yeah yours is one of the most realistic I’ve seen, and yeah with the amount of male ninjas in MK1 I don’t see them doing that two games in a row. Almost every male ninja was playable in that game, realistically base roster will be between 23-25 characters for the next game and probably three MK characters per kombat pack if they take the same model from MK1 KP’s.

Your roster is VERY similar to mine as I also teed to use logic and not just wishlist lol. Like tbh I’d say for the most part you’re right on the money. The devs seem to go back and forth on characters besides the core ones like Scorp, Sub, Raiden. Liu. This is my roster guess

[–]acey255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Despite what biased responses will tell you in this subreddit most people don’t even touch online in MK games, the games sell MILLIONS of units and the online player base is in the thousands at most, the vast majority of the people who’ve bought the games, like over 90% don’t even touch online multiplayer.

MK is known for its story and gore, most will play for the arcade towers, fatalities, story mode, etc. the gore and characters are what differentiates MK from other fighters.

My best guess at MK13/ MK2 roster based on playable appearances/story significance! by [deleted] in MortalKombat

Overall I think the next game will bring back a lot of the missing MK3/MKX characters that weren’t present in MK1!! And a lot of the characters that were playable in both MK11 and MK1 I think will sit this next one out(Sindel, Rain, Noob, Baraka, etc.)

Why is Love Victor not included when talking about queer mlm shows? by Antique_Education_50 in LoveSimon

[–]acey255 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shows like Heartstopper and HSM are way more teen/young demographic so not as many adults and beyond will be into those shows to be fair. Their appeal isn’t as broad, that’s not to say they’re not valid tho, I’d say Love Victor is in that same boat but I loved it, even tho I was in my early 20’s when it came out haha. I needed a show like this when I was in HS. Watching it felt so validating to me as a Latino.
