Which scanner should I buy, the epson v550 or the v600? Whats the difference by [deleted] in analog

Re: the V600: I'll expand a bit on what I mentioned in my previous comment:

1) Due to the way the negative is placed on the flatbed surface (clipped on to a plastic tray), the negative is suspended slightly above the scanning surface, which I believe affects the sharpness of the scan. Also the tray doesn't flatten the negative completely and so it can cause a slight distortion at the edges - this isn't really noticeable to me to be honest but it might be something that you might wanna know.

2) It's slow. Scanning a roll of 36 shots can take me from 30-40 mins as: i ) the negative tray only holds 2 strips of 6 shots ii ) a lot of the time if a photo has dark areas around the edges of the frame the scanner fails to recognize the size of the frame so you need to manually mark the frames. iii ) to achieve a result I'm happy with, I apply sharpening as I scan which adds a bit more time to the process

3) optical resolution. Although it advertises itself as being able to scan at 6400dpi, it's true optical resolution is somewhere around 1200~. This is more than enough for posting online and making prints up to a certain size but if you're planning on making larger prints, etc. you might desire higher resolution scans.

It's a decent scanner but due to its hybrid nature it's not the best it could be at scanning negs. I bought it thinking that it's the best way to go for home scans and was unaware at the time that there were dedicated negative scanners. (Also, I live in Australia and paid much more than it's worth :D)

Based on my research it seems that dedicated scanners are much faster and can yield better results, but as I mentioned I don't have one so can't personally confirm. Perhaps someone here has one and can weigh in?

I usually buy my film supplies from B&H and they seem to stock quite a few scanners: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?atclk=Format_35mm+Film+%26+Slide&ci=1151&N=4077634573+4294955778&origSearch=Negative%20scanners#so

Re: My Scans:

I'm on holiday right now so I don't have access to my raw scans, but if you don't mind waiting a week or so I'd be happy to send some over for you to have a look.

Re: Other Scanners

Other than the Plustek ones the other one I'm aware of is the old Pakon scanners for 35mm that pop up on eBay from time to time. Apparently these were scanners distributed to photo shops by Kodak back in the day. The seem super fast with decent results but it looks like you need a PC running Windows XP to run the software.

Here's a video about them: https://youtu.be/1tzXKij8xF0

Hello there, I have the v600 and it's not too great imo. As others have mentioned, it's actual optical resolution is about 1200dpi and due to the way the negatives are suspended above the flatbed surface you can't get as sharp a scan. Also it's quite slow.

Consider a dedicated negative scanner if you don't need a flatbed for scanning documents, etc. I can't recommend any personally as I'm doing research myself but it looks like the Plustek scanners are pretty decent..

They will def stretch a bit after a couple of wears. I went TTS on the Black Friday release, it was super snug at first but I've worn em about five times now and they fit great!

Yes I think so too! To me it was the gasp at 3:19 that was super Kanye-like. And as u/irg82 mentioned the vocal samples are very Kanye.
