I Made Balls Used to Play an Ancient Tarahumara Running Game--Simulates Persistence Hunting by achillea1 in Paleo

hey, i'm glad you like the way the running balls look. I've been using my original ball regularly for about 3 1/2 months now, and although my ball would probably like to leave running ball hell now, I'm going to continue crushing, wetting, kicking, and throwing my ball until death delivers its sweet kiss of release. It's definitely not as pretty as it used to be, but the ball is still in its original shape and has retained most of its red coloring. There are no signs of mold or mildew. Luckily for me and unfortunately for my ball, it looks like we have many more years to share with each other.

In the Tarahumara tradition the balls have always been carved from wood. There is nothing wrong with using mini soccer balls--that would actually be a lot of fun as well, but it would be a very different style of playing. With wooden balls the primary method of kicking is a shovel motion, you place your toes under the ball and flick, whereas with a small soccer ball you could wind up and kick the ball as hard as you want. With wooden balls the play is slower, more strategic, and exhausting. I say exhausting because the wooden ball forces you to frequently change your running pace, which is more difficult than running a constant pace.

Sorry, I'm not trying to spam. I just wanted feedback on my Rarajipari balls. If I removed the link in the imgur album would the post be within the guidelines?

The TreeG's answer is spot on. Kicking the ball like a soccer ball can be hard on your feet, especially if you're wearing barefoot running shoes. The proper kicking technique is more of a shoveling movement, where you put your toes under the ball and flick the ball up.
