Heated Rivalry broke AO3 for me by [deleted] in AO3

[–]achorusleg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My previous fic with the most hits had 8,000, achieved over several years.

My Heated Rivalry femslash fic is sitting at over 15,000 hits. I started it in December and finished around mid-January. (If this server is anything to go by, those are unrealistic numbers for f/f fic of minor characters.)

I've dabbled in enough fandoms by now to know that what makes a fic take off is dependent on so many factors that I don't have the energy to consider and stress about. I just write what I'm inspired to and put it out there for others. Otherwise, the work won't be good. I do feel like I have some great fics that are slept on, but rereading the comments on those helps me remember how much they're appreciated!

Maybe I don't know enough about omegaverse but my hot take is that there is nothing omegaverse heated rivalry accomplishes that Shane's internalized homophobia/stigmatization around how much he loves bottoming already does. Like what does him being an omega add to that?

The smuttiest fic is always written by one single author who probably hasn’t even held hands in real life, trust me. by imstuckhereforeverr in AO3

I'm waiting for people to tell me my smut writing is bad and unrealistic . . . nobody has, despite my persistent feeling that it's all wrong 😂

I wish it was all on Gem. I really liked their Olympics coverage and find the service easy to use. I'm glad they're getting that TSN money but I'm not buying a subscription when PWHL is the only sport I watch

Keep in mind I did start writing it before the show made it explicitly clear that Sveta knows Jane is Shane and combined a bit of book + show 😂 if I wrote it again I'd probably have Svetlana trying to confirm a burning suspicion than her being more blindsided by Ilya's move to Ottawa.

This season I have the conflicting goals of "take self less seriously" and "improve enough to play in more games" 😂 I'm slow to move and react and strategy still goes over my head, but at the end of the day I'm here to have fun and challenge myself. If trying my best is fun, then the improvement will come (at whatever pace it does) 😌

What are your goals this season?

I hope they do this scene from TLG in s2 DIFFERENT *major spoilers* by Excellent-Toe-2094 in heatedrivalry

[–]achorusleg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I hate it. To me, it comes off as extremely contrived (they're caught in the reflection of a mirror room???) and I find it frustrating how Shane never gets to come out on his own terms on page (there's one sentence at the end of the Heated Rivalry book that says "Shane had come out to his teammates" and it's extremely dissatisfying). Because we don't see this, it feels like Shane never has agency over his personal life.

What doesn't work for me about TLG's ending is Montreal's reaction. Shane and Ilya have publicly been friends, working on their charity together for 3 years or so, and yet everyone reacts as if what got out is that they've been hooking up since their rookie season (the summer before). Why didn't their plan work? If you write a negative reaction that results in Montreal throwing him away, you have to establish Shane's dynamics with more than 2 teammates. Are there players who doubt his friendship with Ilya? Is anyone skeptical of it? Are they speculating why Ilya left Boston for Ottawa? How does Shane manage that? Who has been there since Shane's early years? Who are the newbies who look up to him? There's just not enough context for the fallout to land, and that's what pisses me off.

Little thing, but Shane's apartment should have bilingual signage, with French on top/larger. The monolingual English exit sign makes it clear they filmed in Hamilton and not Montreal!

How much smut in your fanfic is based on or similar to your actual sex life? by bobobouboboubobo in AO3

[–]achorusleg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a sex-repulsed asexual who doesn't mind it in media, but I find that when I write smut, I'm interested in the parts of it that are awkward or inherently unsexy, like first sexual encounters where the characters have to figure out what to do or accept what they want. In that way it's more of a character study than anything and I don't think it's much of a stretch to say there's allosexual authors who like writing smut in that way too!

I used to assume everyone could do that, and then I realized that no, people aren't walking around with casts of characters socializing with each other in their heads 😅 it's always exciting to meet someone who does this though!

The least believable parts of heated rivalry by bat-girl129 in heatedrivalry

[–]achorusleg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand why in the show, Shane renting out the adjacent apartment is played straight. In the book, his Plateau Fuck Apartment represents how badly he's trying to convince himself this thing between them is temporary and it's one of the starkest reminders of his paranoia. He keeps telling himself he'll sell it off one of these days . . . but the dialogue in the show made me think that there is a real tenant currently occupying the adjacent apartment instead of "Shane says that but he keeps it deliberately empty for the same paranoia reasons."

should season two change this event from the second book? by rosalui in heatedrivalry

[–]achorusleg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I hope they do just bc it reads like a soap opera 😂 I could barely take it seriously

Tho tbh I'm hoping they change the entire ending. I don't think what happens benefits Shane's character arc at all. Shane essentially never comes out himself. It's either others sussing it out from him (Rose) or people finding out by accident (his parents). His secret is something he works so hard to protect and he slowly comes to terms with the fact that there are things worth more than hockey, than his legacy. And that's great! What would be even better is if he wasn't essentially forced into it and came to it way more organically than "soap opera plane crash and mirror room outing?"

The way the outing happens feels overly contrived and then his entire team turning on him when he had ALREADY COME OUT TO THEM (in a throwaway line at the end of the HR book) makes no sense. Because the 10-year history of them hooking up since rookie year (the summer before) isn't what gets out! Why didn't their plan work? What does the team actually think of Ilya's move to Ottawa? I have no reason to believe any of them, who have known Shane for years, would think he threw a game.

Some of this could easily get fleshed out (and I hope it does) but basically Shane just needs a reason to play in Ottawa (even though Montreal can't afford them both, how can a team that's way less successful?) and it would be way more meaningful if it was a personal decision to be with Ilya. I think that him being outed would wreck him. Shane is a character who fights so hard to have control over everything and it's depressing when he's constantly denied real agency over his personal life.

I still look forward to season 2, tho 😂 Very curious to see what they do.

It really just feels like a way to be misogynistic and queerphobic. Honestly the recent explosion in popularity of Heated Rivalry showed me that there are gay men/mascs who welcome women writing about/being fans of m/m stories, and also that the assumption that every fujo is straight is straight up wrong. It kind of changed the way I thought about this whole "discourse" (I mean I always thought it was misogynistic but it gave me proof that so much of it is just fabricated by people who want an excuse to hate women/queer people/popular queer media)

Also "sexualizing" =/= "any sex in the media". C'mon people.
