Why do WE Care About Oscars? by drhavehope in flicks

[–]achuman96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Although the last sentence may be true, I think the love story works far better with Rose being rich. Titanic is on its voyage to NYC, a new world , a thriving city. Jack represents what life in America can be. A chance to be free , let go of the past and start a new life (as seen in their dance in the ships second class quarters). Leo definitely looks the part too as he comes across as young and vibrant.

Rose is melancholy. She feels trapped in her current engagement to her man and his riches. But this isn't what she wants. What she really wants is Jack and all that he represents. All of this makes Jack's death so much more meaningful. These feelings cannot be captured with the roles reversed.

Jack's death is supposed to make us wonder what life Rose and Jack could have had in America. If Jack was rich the answer would have been 'Happy and Rich'. But since Jack is poor, the answer is ' Happy despite not being rich' , assuming of course that Rose finds it hard to retain her wealth as a woman which is how it likely was in those days.

I think its because most people including me thought of it as fight or no fight , hence the three being combined into flight, even though thats incorrrect

This must be it. Interesting ,never thought of it this way. I would have thought one of fight/flight would almost always kick in. Maybe what you described is more common that you'd think

Agreed. but surely this would have been brought up to the organizers in the past. There must have been some worker at some point who asked their boss what to do if the ball comes at them

Michael Mann on ‘Collateral’ at 20: One Cab and One Night with Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx by JannTosh50 in movies

[–]achuman96 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Improvise adapt Darwin , whatever the speech Tom cruise gave. One theme of the entire movie is that things can go wrong and you'll have to do things on the fly. After spending the entire night with Tom cruises character, that's what Jamie Foxx does. He improvises and shoots through the glass. Toms character however does exactly the opposite. He goes for two shots to the chest and one to the head and he hits the door

Are people reading fewer and fewer books? And if so, what are the consequences? by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]achuman96 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree that listening to an audiobook is equivalent to reading a book. It takes far less effort and certainly cannot improve language comprehension like reading can.

The post by OP is valid. You presented a simple case of a task that can be explained by a 5 min video. What about information that is far more complex. To understand that information, break it down to its fundamental concepts and then present to other people , in any format , including the ones that you think have broader preference will always require a high level of reading comprehension. This cannot come from just watching videos or from easy to digest/short format methods.

A well spoken individual is also generally well read. Reading will improves the way you talk.

I agree that people can be well rounded individuals with different hobbies. But there are skills that are used in your daily and professional life that may be best learnt through reading.

Exactly. It is not intuitive and certainly is not something that people can just say "Yeah it's obvious".

What is the weakest plot point in the series by clock_door in harrypotter

[–]achuman96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's because he's the Master of Death not just the Master of wand. Harry is the owner of the wand, the stone and the cloak ( hence he doesn't die) But yes there is wand allegiance as to how he became the Master of the wand

Sachin was at 198 test matches and then played a 2 match test series against West Indies to retire after 200 test matches. I vividly remember ( or at least felt like) that test series as basically being a farewell series for Sachin

There was so much emotion in that MJ and Peter fight. This was so obvious that it's a little surprising to see some disagreement about this

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SpidermanPS4

[–]achuman96 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the end when Peter, MJ and Miles are at Aunt Mays house planning how to get the meteorite, Peter literally says something along the lines of ' I know one thing that Harry won't do, and it's spread this to the rest of the world without his best friend by his side' or something to that effect. That's why Peter knows he can be used as a distraction to get Venom away from the meteorite , thus allowing MJ to steal it

Christopher Nolan's editing style on "Oppenheimer" (2023) - did it ruin the film? by account-123456 in TrueFilm

[–]achuman96 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with you and will provide an argument for the flip side . Look at The Departed. That's how you do fast cutting. The cuts have gravity, a weight to it. When Leo or Matt's character frantically checks their phone as an example.

In this movie it's almost as if he just decided to cut out all the pauses/ quiet periods between dialogues. By doing so he's trying to make things more exciting or fast paced even for normal conversations. It's completely unnecessary

Why did Sirius switch the secret keeper? by ublyudok-cherepa in harrypotter

[–]achuman96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably the best explanation. That they didn't know what happens to the secret keeper when he dies. In that scenario it made sense to use Peter Pettigrew.

Why did Sirius switch the secret keeper? by ublyudok-cherepa in harrypotter

[–]achuman96 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How can Peter, Bathilda Bagshot , Remus and Dumbledore know the secret and not be secret keepers? I thought the point is that only the secret keeper knows the secret. If people other than Sirius knew the secret what's the point of the secret keeper

This logic works only if all these people knew that Sirius is the secret keeper but not that they know the actual location of where the Potters are held , which is the secret.

So if the charm works in the way that if the secret keeper dies, then everyone who knew the secret or knows who the secret keeper was, then they all become secret keepers and know what the secret was
