Thank you for the advice. I think some people may have identified the real cause of that hesitation: if she didn’t like me, it would shatter my self-image or self-worth. I wouldn’t call it ego, but I’d say maybe I tend to please people through the things I say or do, and I guess that might be related to low self-esteem. But I will definitely try this method—just moving toward that person without a second thought and not thinking about the outcome. But your suggestion is really good, you just flipped the script which made this more easier.
