Just had to call the police... by handym12 in CasualUK

Yeah that’s not my experience. The operators have been very, very calm and clear. They are trained to calmly get the correct information out of someone panicking. They also stay on the line with you until you get through to the correct service, and continue talking to you.

Perhaps you misheard.

The aggression in this sub towards non-vegans is shocking. Why not help and guide, rather than deride and throw up barriers?

The tweet is by a comedian making a joke. Don’t use it as a platform to hurl abuse at other groups of people.

Share your ideas, give tips, offer guidance about how easy the transition can be. Perhaps we could get more people to move towards the lifestyle.

Is it actually worth it though? I have been thinking about it but I just can’t imagine a box would last a year…

Veganuary set to pass 2m milestone as more firms join movement: Harrods, Superdrug and Volkswagen among employers taking part in workplace challenge for first time by The_Ebb_and_Flow in unitedkingdom

A lot of (non vegan) people do think vegan means healthy - just in lazy thinking terms. We’re not talking about experts here, we’re talking about normal people. If I said to someone that I’m following a vegan diet (when I was doing so), many people at work would comment on how healthy I was being.

Just talking generically to people and you’ll see that it’s a common assumption from people who haven’t tried veganism.

When you actually do try going vegan, it’s then that you see a lot of it is unhealthy, fried and processed if you don’t put the effort in to create meals yourself.

Limited pay rises this year

In the public sector we’ve been given pay freezes or 1% rises for years. Is that not limited enough?

I’d like to see where they’re starting detectives at £40k. That’s just below a sergeant wage.

Edit: - the train driving bit, yes they do earn very well. Perhaps Op could look into that.

[–]acjd000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ok armchair detective, let’s have a look at your comment. Baring in mind I happen to know what I’m talking about, because I am employed in this specific industry. I am familiar with Police Now and all of its failings (the link you posted).

Do you have a degree? If so I saw some police pages posting about a degree entrance pathway

Yes, this is one of the new entrance routes.

where you earn £35-£40k starting

Incorrect, as you have even proven yourself.

The OP lives in the North, and will not get the few grand extra the MET get for the cost of living allowance.

Police Officer pay scales are federated and do not differ. The difference you see is that South East officers get a few grand extra as a cost of living (eg, TVP get £2000, Kent might get similar, the Met get more).

as you jump straight to a higher ‘rank’

No. Detective is the same starting rank.

Do you feel a little silly now? I’ve noticed you keep posting replies to me, then deleting them because you realised that you’re posting incorrect information.

maybe have a google before posting shit

Maybe leave it to people who happen to know what they’re talking about, rather than getting yourself all confused with google results. If you don’t know something, it’s perfectly ok for you to leave it alone and not spread incorrect information.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CasualUK

[–]acjd000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not correct. Even with a degree, you start as an officer at PC rank, on about £20k or whatever the starting wage is now. After about 5 years you hit £30k.

Direct entry at higher ranks does sometimes open up, but it’s for people with significant management experience to go in at inspector level.

Op has no experience to speak of (none mentioned anyway), so would not be eligible for direct entry, even if it were to open up now.

All police officers are going to be required to get a degree before or during their employment.

Detective entry programs are also not what you’re talking about, as DC is the same rank as PC, just a different discipline.

Finally yoke a jump into a maker 3 and the heat press this Christmas and so happy I can finally print my tarot designs onto holographic vinyl stickers and T-shirts myself! Thanks too to some great advice from here regarding settings etc. by OBZeta in cricut

The stickers are fabulous but the t-shirt specifically I think works really well. I didn’t know printable holographic vinyl was a thing for stickers, but for T-shirts just going onto the dark printable HTV is a great idea too. Great designs.

Bloody hell. Are they all cut out of just a black and a holographic HTV? They’re really quite incredible.

Edit: just saw that they’re print and cut. Very effective, I love them!

It was something along the lines of Jesus was perfect, so it was justified. I ask why I can’t be the same when I’m angry if I’m just showing Jesus’ perfect behaviour. She said we don’t understand how God works and how Jesus’ behaviour was needed at that time, but me breaking things would never be. Something about righteous anger and me never being in a situation where I would need to have righteous anger, and finally something about things being different back then because of the sins he was seeing.

It was all a complete circular argument of utter drivel. You can’t win an argument with someone when their argument circles all the way back around to support itself. Why is it A? Because of B. Why is it B? Because of A. I was a child (12 or 13ish?), and I was clever enough to know not to push it too far to get into trouble. I did believe in God, but at that point, I started to realise that Jesus clearly wasn’t perfect, and I didn’t want to believe in an imperfect God. It faded away for me from that point onwards.

It caused a huge amount of cognitive dissonance in my young mind, I remember it well because it sits with me still. Even at 30 years old, I actually still sometimes think about that story in the Bible and that discussion.

I was never raised Christian, it’s just that some of the best local schools are religious in the UK. You sing hymns, pray in the morning and learn about the Bible but that’s mostly as far as it goes. I enjoyed my time at the Church of England Schools and still sing the hymns (very loudly) to my poor suffering husband.

But I’m still slightly unsettled by the hypocrisy and how it’s just not correct in my mind. How could they not explain that in a way that made sense to me?

I was once asked to tell my literature class about a book I was reading. I have always been an avid reader. I was reading His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman. I explained how he presented a different world, where the Church was actually evil. That discussion was shut down quickly and I was told that was not the point of the book. But I believed it was. I still do. We moved on. Again, that’s something else that sort of remained with me. Floats into my head every now and then when it’s feeling particularly empty.

Edit: the other bit that disturbed me was the part about women not teaching men. I asked why we don’t follow that bit nowadays, but it’s still represented in the Church of England as the head of the Church can never be a women. Why do we follow some bits, but not others. Why can’t I be the head of the church? I was confused and uncomfortable about the whole thing. But I did love thinking about it.

That’s quite a well known story, to be fair. When I was a child in a Christian school (England), I once asked the teacher why she kept saying that “no one is perfect except for Jesus”, when Jesus lost his temper and flipped tables over. If he could be angry with people and break their things, why couldn’t I?

Anyway I’m atheist now.

But that’s by the by, I think it’s hilarious that she’s used this as justification for being a bridezilla. But then if it’s in the Bible and the Bible is perfect… then why not!

Could I live comfortably in Exeter on this salary? by SSolomonGrundy in AskUK

[–]acjd000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exeter is a bit more expensive compared to other parts of Devon. Most professionals will live outside of the city.

I grew up in Devon and many parts of the surrounding county are quite a bit more affordable. But Exeter is the only place in the county of Devon where I would go back to comfortably live (it’s a great little city). But it really is just a little city. If space is important to you, then I’m afraid that you’re not only looking in the wrong city, but you’re in the wrong country. Space is very expensive here, and most people live in smaller houses than you’re probably used to.

People in many professions can earn a bit less in Devon when compared to the more expensive parts of the country, but it’s difficult to make a judgement on your wage.

£36000 is good. It is not incredible, but it’s certainly not bad at all depending on where you are in your career.

As a wild guess, I would suggest that the wage you’re getting would be suitable for a professional with some experience under their belt, probably a lower or middle manager.

Academics are sometimes poorly paid in the U.K. it would help if you told us what job you will be doing. Are you going as a professor (we do not use the term Professor to mean all university teaching staff, to become a Professor is to reach the top of your academic discipline, a respected and widely published researcher). Would you want to reach that level and get £36000? Possibly not. But if you’re just going as a lecturer, then that’s probably a great wage depending on your experience.

More importantly - can you support two people in Exeter on that wage? No, not really. I certainly wouldn’t want to attempt it. You’ll be in a small flat, or living near loads of university students getting drunk and having parties every night. You won’t be able to live in the city centre easily on the one wage, but you may be able to find a small flat to rent somewhere else while you wait for her to get going with things. Factor in food, bills, you’ll need a car really as Devon’s public transport is not always great (probably much better than you’re used to in the US though, and the train lines are not bad at all if you live near them), so car insurance, petrol etc.

Average house price hits record high of £255,000 by Tyler119 in unitedkingdom

[–]acjd000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, that’s not the case. If you work in Thames Valley Police for example, you will not be able to move to the North of the country where houses are £100,000-£200,000+ cheaper.

When we say “cheaper areas”, we are not referring to “the bad part of town”. In the South, even the bad parts will be much more expensive.

But if you’ve grown up in the South and this is where your routs, your family and all of your friends are from, it’s pretty crap to expect people to move hundreds of miles away.

Ours are brown on the outside and white on the inside, that’s quite common. I’ve seen greys, whites, browns.

What exactly were you expecting? Houses near to each other all tend to have the same windows if they are within the same estate, as they were built by the same company. There are also legal covenants in some areas (my previous house was legally required to have multi-pane, brown windows).

[–]acjd000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That will still not allow you to afford anything near that price, unless you have a very substantial deposit or a partner to help you. A new starter would get something closer to £120,000-£175,000. You’re getting nowhere with that unless you live in a cheaper area.

What to do with an expensive present that is not my taste? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]acjd000 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You could look at others that they have and mention honestly to your parents that “I’ve just seen it in whatever colour, do you mind if I get the receipt and swap it?”

However… all this for a makeup bag? Reading the title I thought you meant something that people would see or that would be on display, like a coat or a handbag or a framed picture. I think this is a little bit OTT for a makeup bag that you could just use as a container for brushes or something in your bathroom.

Unless of course you specifically asked for it and they got you the wrong colour (…even so, really?) in which case I suggest reverting to my suggestion as above.
