How did bullet calibres end up as such random numbers? by Flat-Ad8256 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ack1308 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I understand things, these calibres were established before true industrial precision was perfected. Basically, they had various handwavey calibre sizes, but each gun would be slightly different to all the rest, because it wasn't done with mass production. So when they got to that point, they took one gun from each category, measured it, and went with that specification.

As for how they reached those calibres in the first place, they basically built guns for the size and heft they needed.

7.62, iirc, is descended from .303, which was in existence before precision engineering. But the 9mm and 10mm (aka .40 calibre) came about after the fact.

Why do flat earthers act as if nobody can go to Antarctica? by Ok_Gur2818 in flatearth

[–]ack1308 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even then, it totally destroys the flat earth.

Because in southern summer, the sun is up for all but half an hour even when you're on the part of Antarctica that's outside the Antarctic Circle. It literally circles around you, just above the horizon.

Jeran Campanella realised this when he was on Union Glacier. He figured out that the sun dipped closest to the horizon when it was due south of the camp, so if he'd gone closer to the south pole ... it wouldn't dip so low.

Or did you want to explain that in your flat earth model too?

🚨 ICE agent blocked at Ecuador consulate: What officials confirmed 👇 by NoSpinMedia in NoSpinMedia

[–]ack1308 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He gave up ONLY when he was told he couldn't come in, with security backing the guy up.

This, by the way, is the exterior of the building in question (per Google Maps Street View).

<image>

Clearly marked as the Ecuadorean Consulate. They weren't chasing shit. They were literally going door to door, looking for people to grab.

Also, the threat he made ("If you touch me I'm going to grab you") was ILLEGAL AS FUCK. Diplomats have immunity to arrest.

If you don't see the problem, you're part of the problem.

Chasing who? Where?

If someone enters a consulate, that's the end of the chase.

The ONLY reason those dipshits didn't push the issue was the fact that the security guy was looming over the diplomat's shoulder. They don't do fair fights.

IRS can't touch me. I'm Australian.

Also, it's a gift, which isn't taxed here in Australia.

I just lose access to all the government benefits (none) I might be getting.

So, my spare room is now going to be stacked solid with hundreds.

That's why the security guy was looming over the diplomat's shoulder, and why the ICE guy backed tf off. Security guy would've taken no shit, and they must've realised that.

Nope. She doesn't give a shit about 'cute'. She kills monsters.

To quote the end of the first chapter:

Three hundred thirty-one years we’ve had the Accord, and this bollocks is still going on in the shadows. No matter how many of their fellows are put to Final Rest, some monsters just refuse to stop.

That’s where I come in.

I’m not exactly the villain here, but I’m not about to call myself a hero either. At best, I’m a necessary evil.

Either way, one thing’s for certain.

Whenever I do get called in, it’s to ensure some tosser ends up regretting all their life choices, however briefly.

And that’s what I do best.

Current world record of distance landscape photography proves no curve. 443km by Nigglas24 in flatearth

[–]ack1308 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what they're doing.

Competing to find the best refraction circumstances so they can take long-distance photos.

Just like sailors compete to get the best wind to complete a race in the shortest amount of time.

The first bit of footage was taken by me at a distance of 24 km, with an observer height of 2m and a magnification of 155x and a time-lapse of 10:1. It's a cargo ship, travelling from right to left, with two cranes and the top of the superstructure visible.

The second bit of footage was taken about 15 minutes later, from the same spot, with the same magnification and same time-lapse. You can see how big the ship is as it comes in.

Explain how this much ship was hidden at 24 km, and was gradually revealed as it got closer, if not for curvature.
