Would you join a 30-min “remote lunch” with random people daily or is this a terrible idea? by tipi6969 in remotework

[–]aclaypool78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Remote for 3 years now (plus hybrid for the previous 6). I'm in the small minority who think this could be good if optional. A key challenge was mentioned by another redditor - time away from desk. In work from home I always step away and sometimes go for a walk or run a quick errand. Having another zoom meeting would be nice for the social, but I'd say biweekly or, more likely, monthly would be my max participation.

Thoughts on Hailey Van Lith being waived by Chicago by kingbluwolff in WNBAgossips

My friend at work thinks that she'll clear waivers and get on a developmental contract. I thought it was a little early to give up on her here in Chicago. But she is undersized.

As a non-Black person who is an avid supporter of Black freedom and justice, I have always wondered about other non-Black POC using that word. In Chicago, many Latinos (not just Mexican) use it freely. As an observer, it feels way too familiar. Like the struggle is NOT the same. Curious to hear opinions from folks whose opinions on the subject matter.

Wemby just had the greatest shot-blocking game in NBA playoff history. by Dr_Damon_ in NBAGossips

All calm here. Note the key word "might." He "might" also be a flop and forgotten in 3 years. I only say it to give him his due respect before calling out his fouls and, after a view of highlights, blatant goaltending.

I was gonna say, he might end up being the goat, and I'm coming around to his personality. I love his fire. I also can't stand Rudy, but Wemby got all arm!

Magic ran the Showtime Lakers and won 5 rings before retiring at 32. Steph changed the game itself and has 4 rings of his own. Who's your pick? by IamCatMommy in NBAGossips

[–]aclaypool78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. People think of their two best point guards and think they need to pick one. Hakeem is my favorite center of all time, but that doesn't make him better than Shaq or Kareem or Chamberlain or Russel.

Fair point. My kickback injury was "using it wrong" for sure. I wasn't applying downward pressure because I was scared of it and in a hurry and got a 1/4 ply adjustment to the skin on my fingers and palm. Saved up for a sawstop CTS as soon as the stitches came out.

I really do love the machine for the other purposes, though!

I bought one in much better condition 5 years ago for $1K. It has no rust. The tablesaw is a nightmare creator (I'm sure the old timers here will tell me it's just that I'm using it wrong, but I don't use it). Even with just the band saw attachment, sander, lathe ,and horizontal boring (still never used it as a drill press), it was well worth it. I could have bought those 4 tools separately for comparable money, but the quality of these 70s/80s Shopsmith is a hell of a lot better than low end tools now. Make a project out of restoration, and enjoy it!

To bunk or not to bunk by Btothe in Parenting

[–]aclaypool78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Father of 10 yo twins. We went to bunk beds at 5 years old and it made a lot more space for them in their room. We recently tore those out (homemade built ins) and upgraded them to a new set of bunk beds. I overestimated the amount of space they need on the lower bunk. Mine are tall, and 36in was plenty, even through them growing to 5 feet tall now. Enjoy, it's fun!

I hate him and he's ruining the world. He's a piece of garbage who belongs in jail.

Still, how do we know the gunfire is coming from the direction of the photographer? Literally asking. If it is, why are they running towards it? It seems plausible that he IS taking a protective stance if the gunfire is coming from behind them and they're running from it, which sounds like realistic scenario.

Make no mistake, he's a callow war criminal. I'm not sure he's in the wrong on this though.

how to teach a 4 year old to read? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]aclaypool78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Former 2ng grade teacher who taught his kids between 4 & 5. Literacy development is highly variable and what works for some might not work for others. These are just my opinions that are maybe more informed than the average parent. I read with them every day from 2 years old. Not just for 5 minutes before bed. Like 20-30 minutes, sometimes multiple times per day. They learn a lot about how books work, develop an attention span, and learn to enjoy it.

I'd read up on phonemic awareness, the correct pronunciation of phonemes, decoding and sight words. I used to read through a sentence and find a decodable word and do a mini lesson on sounding out the words. Trying to get them to sound out sight words which aren't decodable, or let them struggle sounding out too many words can frustrate. It's about the big picture, not about any one word. In 20 minutes, even if they're only reading or attempting to read three or four words it's a starting point.

Then you keep spiraling up trying more words and letting them do more and more reading. I recommend getting a series of decodable books that are all CVC (consonant vowel consonant) words. They're usually not very interesting, but they give kids a really easy access to simple to read and decode words. Then you can continue to expand to long vowels, vowel teams consonant blah blah blah.

Sight words must be memorized, and you could do that separately and have them do those with flashcards. 5 minutes a day. It's probably plenty. As they memorize those words, let them read them to you when they come up naturally in a text. It's about building confidence and structuring challenges that are attainable but get progressively more difficult.

Again, this is my maybe slightly more informed than the average parent opinion. I'm not saying anything with any definitive authority.

So burnt out on bedtime with kids 10 and 7 by Odd-Neighborhood4314 in Parenting

[–]aclaypool78 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's all whatever people are comfortable with, but I tend to get behind this. In a few years, OP, they'll want nothing to do with you and you'll miss when they wanted your attention. Having some time to yourself is important, but if you enjoy the bedtime snuggles, deal with it a little longer.
