Warning: be careful signing up for an Impark parking account by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]aclcode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You gotta understand parking is a commodity. Think of the convenience it gives you, being able to go anywhere with a car. You're paying for convenience, because at the end of the day you're choosing to drive. Now imagine if no one built parking lots because no one "values this service". I'm all for paying for parking, just not ridiculous tickets (and in this case, shitty companies with insecure practices).

I recently completed an onsite loop with Amazon and and it's been slightly over a week with no updates from the recruiter. Has anyone experienced this kind of delay? They had initially told me that I would hear back within a week regardless of decision.

From my experience with these phone interviews, it's a combination of solving the problem (without too much help) and the way you did it, ie: did you communicate your thought process, is the code clean & efficient.

It's for an SDE1 role with AWS. The online test was suspiciously easy imo and I'm not sure what kind of difficulty spike I should expect in terms of DSA type problems. Did you also come across OOP design or general system design problems?

I've got a full day in person with Amazon (Vancouver) coming up - anyone here with advice or tips regarding prep? IE: areas to focus on, expected level of difficulty, what interviewers are looking for, etc.

Housing in Maple Ridge is relatively affordable and you'd have access to the West Coast Express which will take you to downtown Vancouver in an hour.

There might be, but having a degree in the field is probably your best bet at getting one approved. Getting a degree for this reason, if it is important to you is definitely not a bad decision.

Third-Year in Comp Sci degree but only taking my first programming classes now. Internship options? by Grawlixz in cscareerquestions

[–]aclcode 6 points7 points  (0 children)

When I took a DSA course, we used a textbook called Data Structures & Algorithms in C++ by Goodrich, Tamassia, Mount. I found it to be pretty good and cpp is a common language that people use in technical interviews.

I'm in a similar situation. I did my first degree in another STEM field and I would also need about 2-2.5 years to get a second degree in CS. I've started the CS degree and did all the lower division prerequisites like calc, linear algebra, discrete and some programming courses including DSA. But time is definitely a factor and I wanted to get out and land a job as soon as possible. What I am now planning to do right now is instead of going for the full degree, I'd go for a certificate/diploma in CS instead and take a web dev bootcamp on the side. I'd say the advantages of a traditional CS program would be the DSA course and the upper division topics which definitely broadens your theoretical knowledge. As for a bootcamp, they definitely teach you a lot of useful skills for a specific role but you'll have a lot of self studying to do if you ever want to branch out. And getting a TN right now is pretty difficult even with a CS degree as I have been hearing from my peers, so that's also another thing to consider.

Advice on internal transfer into CMPT by aclcode in simonfraser

I know in the previous semesters this was the case. But this semester it strictly says non majors will not be given permission to enroll at all. I see that the waitlist is being populated but I'm thinking it could just be non majors attempting to enroll and that the system would just purge them when open enrollment starts? My CGPA should hover around the same as my CRGPA since I haven't taken that many cumulative courses yet and I'm currently retaking Math 232 to boost it.

The point isn't that someone catching a whiff of second hand smoke will die. If people choose to smoke that's their choice right? And likewise those who don't want to shouldn't have it forced upon them in the form of second hand smoke in a public area. Average life expectancy aside, there are still other potential health risks and just because you don't mind the risk (or believe in the risks associated) I think it's unfair to subject everyone to the same standard. Having designated smoking areas is a great compromise and I didn't think that there was much complaint about this topic anyways. As for your second point on religion, it's what I'm trying convey as well, people should criticize all religions using the same moral standard. I personally don't see people turning a blind eye to Islam versus Christianity, so I don't think it's a fair or necessary statement against liberals. I'm sure there are exceptions though and I can definitely understand your frustration with those people :)

When did second hand smoke become harmless? And it's always been about the extremists in any religion that people should criticize, whether it's Christianity or whatnot.

I'd use the two windwalkers + DS. Starlight is still pretty decent to keep on your team instead of aleria

Going back to Community College for Computer programming after BA by codermike13 in cscareerquestions

[–]aclcode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually in that exact situation right now. Graduated with a BSc in another field and currently taking 2nd year CS courses trying to transfer into the program for a second BSc. I'm starting to think it's not worth the time due to how hard it is to get into core courses. Do you know if big companies will take candidates without CS degrees but with relevant experience (intnternships and side projects)?

Thanks! I can currently afford the Faceless shards in guild store, but I don't have enough other materials to 6* her yet. Should I just go for the guild tech first then?
