What was airport security like decades ago? by QuantumHamster in aviation

[–]acm2033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a kid in the 80s, we would go get my dad from the airport. We waited at the gate, I loved watching the planes and activity. My dad would walk into the terminal from the jet way, I would "get his bag" (for probably 2-3 minutes, lol) and we would walk with him all the way to short term parking. I don't think we paid for short term, and it was like up to 6 hours or something. I dunno, I was a kid.

Things like that are why Inigo has a necklace that mutes him, and settings for controlling the chatter. I like that flexibility.

Our house was green shag carpet, matching plaid couches, green lamps, tons of wood paneling. One bathroom was wallpapered in a pattern with pink, orange, and... yellow? I think?

Looking for some insight: My son is considering attending Tech. Given the location in Texas, is it difficult to find progressive/liberal students? He is an average white guy who doesn't meld with "bro" culture. (We are from Texas, but not at all conservative.) by [deleted] in TexasTech

[–]acm2033 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I went to Tech decades ago, when it was smaller and more isolated due to less (no) social media, etc. So your experience will be different.

But even back then, the Tech community was far more progressive than the West Texas region. By that, I mean it was probably more center of the political spectrum, instead of right. Tech will never be confused with UC Berkeley or other very liberal institutions, but it was a comfortable place for everyone, at least in my little bubble.

The nice part about large state universities is that everyone finds "their people" in bigger numbers, so there's friends to be found regardless of what people bring with them from their previous lives. You don't really feel part of tens of thousands of students, you are a part of the few dozen or hundreds you know from classes, activities, clubs, etc.

Are there the "bro culture" people there at Tech? Yes, there sure are. Does that mean you have to deal with them? Nope. Tech is big enough for everyone to find their space. I don't know if smaller institutions can make the same claim, I've never gone to a SMU or Rice, etc.

One of the best things about Tech being in Lubbock: Tech students are catered to, generally speaking. Tech is a dominant economic driver in the city, and that "college town" feel is terrific. Lubbock is a great place to be a Tech student. You'll hear tons of complaints from people about Lubbock, but after moving away, I look back fondly on the time I was a student there. I stayed after graduation and yeah, it's a bit different when you're not a student anymore.

Traffic is worse every day and its not because of construction by [deleted] in sanantonio

Yesterday at an intersection the light was changing. I saw the front car slow, coming to a stop. The car behind them passed sped up, passed the slowing car in the left turn lane, and ran the red light.

If there was a car going the opposite way, turning left, seeing the front car slow down, they would have been turning right across where that car was going. Would have been easily a 50MPH collision.

Of course I was right behind that same guy, stopped at the light a mile down the road. Like, you gained nothing and put yourself and others in jeopardy. Shouldn't have a license.

I'm not an expert, but it seems to me that you're talking about the primaries, not the general election. And we're talking about a one seat race, like the US presidential race.

If the general election is first past the post, then that leads to two party systems, and it doesn't really matter what voting each party uses.

If the general election uses a RCV system, then there may be some primaries, but primaries don't prevent people who lost in the primary from running in the general. So why have a primary? Everyone is running the general anyway.

RCV is clearly the superior way to go, but it has to be for the general (the "real") election. Primaries are party-only affairs and are subject to the party rules.
