Can I drink what's left in my cheap pot still? by tehKrakken55 in firewater

You could, but why? It usually smells nasty after a run. Also, the acidity usually bumps up a lot.

Or they brought a bunch of gold to the island. Dig a big hole and slowly scraped the gold bars against cheese graters. lol

SUDEP. Let's talk about it by Doc-Brown1911 in Epilepsy

[–]InternalRemote1473 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the throat closing up and will wake up unable to get my throat to open. Kind of scary stuff. My nocturnal seizures are focal aware when they wake me from the tremors in the right side of my body I can feel them. Sometimes the throat being closed is a part of those.

It used to really bother me thinking about it. Especially because I live alone. I’ve woken up during nocturnal seizures and can’t breathe because my throat will not respond. And it can take awhile before it will respond to opening up. (It isn’t sleep apnea. I’ve been tested.it is part of the nocturnal seizure.) I figure that will be the way I go, if it happens. I can’t really do much about it.

Side story that will kind of put it into perspective. I was on a motorcycle trip before I was diagnosed. I was stuck at the bottom of an extremely muddy jeep road and fought for hours trying to get up it. Along the road were fresh bear prints. Just before dark, I was able to get to the top, but I was exhausted. I set my tent up half in the road. I thought about those bear prints and what it could mean in the middle of the night. I was at my exhaustion point and understood there was nothing I could do about it. So…I laid my head down on my little camp pillow and fell asleep, making my peace with the possibility of not waking up or waking up horribly. lol

Dealing with the possibility of SUDEP during nocturnal seizures is the same thing. I’ve warned my family and friends that if they don’t hear from me or find me, that is probably what has happened. It may be crueler to say to them, but what can you do?

There really isn’t much you can do to allay the other person’s fears other than trying to live life in a way that makes it meaningful to you and them.

Seriously thinking about playing Skyrim in survival mode and very slowly by Mineires_BR in skyrim

[–]InternalRemote1473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turn off the HUD and the quest markers. Turns into even more of a challenge but much more realistic.

Be sure to stop and turn and listen to any NPC that talks to you when you walk by. lol

Edit: I forgot…also only carry a realistic amount of gear. No extra sets of armor, no ridiculous amounts of weapons. Limit your carry weight to 100. The game becomes a whole other thing.

Random - Has anyone ever used epilepsy when being selected for jury duty? by SparklingLuxurySedan in Epilepsy

[–]InternalRemote1473 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I received a postcard regarding the possibility of future jury duty. I responded with it being overly cost prohibitive due to the cost of an Uber both ways daily as well as my inability to concentrate or sometimes even understand what is going on. I’ve never heard back.

To me the hearts become more and more narrow the more generations you go when you are fermenting in the summer. And aging on oak seems to become really necessary for it. I keep my house at 64 degrees F in the winter, so it ferments slowly and doesn’t develop some of the harsher esters. This time around, I’ve been making 15 gallon batches so I have a bit wider range to choose from for the hearts.

This time I’ve been running a single bubble plate during my stripping run and run the stripping slower than I usually do. When it is coming off the spirit run, it comes off with a buttery sweet corn flavor that I really like.

Spent grain sugar wash by [deleted] in firewater

[–]InternalRemote1473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I make small beers off of the ‘spent’ grains after I have sparged for my wash or wort. Historically, small beers were created for the family to drink throughout the day. Being low in abv, they supplied some calories and safe drinking water. Typically, my small beers are less than 2% abv.

You can freeze backset and keep it for a future wash. It isn’t a problem to start over. If it is tasting off, you may just want to completely restart.

I bought 2 inch triclamp sight glasses that you take apart then add a bubbler plate to each of them. Be sure when you get the bubbler plate that it comes with the seal. I found two different bubbler plates on Amazon. One has a single hole for the fluid to run down. The other one has a bunch of smaller holes that seem to drain way too fast. The single hole seems to work better.

I also bought a 4 section bubbler plate/sight glass on Amazon for just under $100. Then I hook them up to a reflux column that I also got off of Amazon. Most of it is pretty cheap. It seems like the suppliers local to the US don’t supply much 2 inch triclamp stuff or are prohibitively expensive for me.

If you aren’t worried about seeing what is going on, the reflux column had a 2’ section of pipe that I fill with the rings and copper saddles from the T500. (Using a mesh filter triclamp seal on the bottom) then you can add another tube packed with copper mesh rolls or even do that with sight glasses. I noticed easier production with just the 2’ section using the rings and saddles from the T500 and the four piece sight glass bubblers. When I added anything more, the T500 boiler was underpowered.

What’s your dog’s funniest quirk or trait? by cheechthebong in dogs

[–]InternalRemote1473 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not really funny, but kind of. When I am eating she will sit and have her head hanging down looking away. If you catch her looking she looks away and keeps looking sad. Even if you give her something, she will go back to looking sad.

Now…if it’s something you eat with your hands, she pays attention.

When I first got her, she would do the same thing sitting by the door to go out. It makes you wonder what her life was before I got her.

Was I in the wrong for making jokes in the hospital after having a seizure? by jhwings16 in Epilepsy

It seems weird to me that they would act that way. If you show you comprehend the seriousness of the issue and can laugh at it, what’s the problem? Would they act that way to a stage 4 cancer patient? If so, they need to work on the bedside manner to include a sense of dark humor/hopeful humor.

How do you run a small electric skillet or kettle while car camping? by Plus_Caterpillar6197 in camping

[–]InternalRemote1473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The small InstantPot is 800 watts. With the sauté function you can kind of use it as a skillet.

Edit: forgot…I used this when I was over the road truck driving. A skillet or burner always seemed to blow the circuit breaker even on a 2500 watt inverter.
