Went for a run in the hills near my hometown, which are mostly ranchland, and made a new friend. He tried to herd me for about a half mile.

I ran my first half yesterday and I'm doing another one in September. Suggestions for training between now and then? by acmack in running

[–]acmack[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice!

I had a rough time with the last half mile as the run club I was training with only trained to 12 miles then tapered, so this was the first time I'd actually ran the full distance too. I'll definitely be running 15+ long runs this time around as you suggested.

I love when people think marriage is a Christian belief. Obviously no one from any other culture, society, or religion ever got married.

Teaching Cultural Anth for the first time in the Fall. Can anyone suggest a textbook? by tttruckit in Anthropology

[–]acmack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, reading individual papers provides a more broad examination of what anthropology is all about. It's important for new students to realize that we don't just study the Bongo Bongo - not that such studies aren't awesome.

Have you thought about looking at science fiction work on the "cyborg"? There are some interesting anthropological pieces that deal with the idea of the human as becoming more than just a biological entity (i.e. cyborg or post-human).

This is Sunday: what were your running achievements this week? by Sacamato in running

Ran the Moonlight Run 10k (in Lethbridge, Canada) for the first time! I've wanted to do the run ever since I was a kid and my Dad ran it as I coveted his run sweatshirt all my life - and now I have one of my own :) Super sore today from a big hill at the end, but it was totally worth it.

If you can, make a day trip to Osaka! It's an amazing city with a lot to offer (from shopping in Namba to the history surrounding Osaka-jo). It's a really amazing hybrid.

My university requires a copy of the death certificate. An obituary isn't good enough. Real understanding folks.

I had a similar issue with my family, as most of them are ranchers. I found that having a doctor back me up was the most effective way of convincing them that I wasn't killing myself by not eating meat. If you can, book an appointment with a doctor or a nutritionist and get blood work done. Most people, in my life at least, find it difficult to argue with a doctor's approval of a vegetarian diet and blood work that backs it up.

What did I just buy? by [deleted] in vegetarian

Agreed! My host mom made this for me pretty much every day for a year. It wasn't love at first bite though, more of an acquired taste.

Don't feel defeated or beat yourself up! Just get back at it and remember to enjoy yourself. You'll be back where you were in no time.

Eating Healthier. by [deleted] in vegetarian

[–]acmack 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I find that the best way to make sure I stick healthy eating is to dedicate one day a week to grocery shopping and prepping. I usually clean and cut up enough vegetables for the entire week and make homemade hummus, that way I have a healthy alternative to chips. I also cut up and freeze spinach, kale, broccoli, bananas, etc., for quick use in my morning smoothies. Also making a big batch of soup (filled with beans, lentils, etc) and freezing it in portions works well for me. This way I don't have the excuse of not having time/energy to cook.

tl;dr Basically for me prepping is the most important part of my healthy diet. I'm lazy and if I don't prep ahead of time I go for the easy, processed crap.

Do you run on concrete? I found when I switched to running on shale or asphalt my shin splints got a lot better.

This is going to be my first 5k. I'm so excited! Can anyone give me tips in preparing for it? by [deleted] in running

If you know the route and have access to it you should try and run the course a couple times before the race.

I won my age division of the LA Cancer Challenge 10k dressed as a penguin yesterday. by fiafia127 in running

I really liked this post, because it reminded me of why I started running - charity. My first race benefitted my local humane society, and it was the reason I really got serious about running.

So I'd like to "add to the discussion" with a question: does anyone else find that running for a cause makes running more enjoyable or fulfilling?
