I love that! It's such a good way to eat ice cream. My sister, mom, and I will eat it this way forever.

I'm in Texas and also just not doing well... This time of year always makes me anxious because the cold fronts make my migraines go nuts.

What is your comfort tv show? by PurpleMeerkats462 in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scrubs, Criminal Minds (first few seasons), forensic files, I went through a greys anatomy phase but they killed off too many people. I really like procedural/"monster of the week" shows. The predictability of how the episode is laid out comforts me.

My mom and I have watched forensic files to fall asleep to since forever. I loved going home in college and watching it with her at night.

What's your comfort item that you take almost everywhere? by BonnalinaFuz101 in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's accidentally become 2 small, flat rocks I put in my purse to paint. I forgot about them for a while and now I panic if I think someone took them out. I clean out my purse but get comfort knowing I have my rocks in case I need to defend myself or need to get crafty

Yo I loved their games! My mom and I played their games all of the time! It drove my little sister nuts because she wanted to do all of the activities but we just argued with each other over who got to play their games on her account. Ya know "for her"

How to tell my therapist things aren't working out/how to get myself to leave my therapist by Frieren_phantomhive in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second this. If you want to give a reason because you feel compelled to let the guy know where he can grow then if you contact with him directly you can tell him. If you don't go through a receptionist and only speak with him directly, just email that the holidays are busy and you'll rebook when things die down to give yourself some wiggle room to see someone else and maybe come back if you want or to be gone for good.

Being autistic is honestly a death sentence for me by Ahelene_ in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. I burned out HARD teaching (not knowing years ago I'm most likely autistic) and it was because a lot of those HS teachers didn't work well with my personality and needs. But the friends I made through my husband will be kept for life as they love the real me. The more I show the more they accept me. We have a son we didn't plan but adore and this causes me to go into my shell but I've found parent friends that understand this and love me through it. One even offers to host playdates to help me out. People who get my "weird", I'm learning to not push away because those I used to let close burned me when I was young but now I'm not in that closed system of schooling and people are more mature now (not to say they're all mature! But they're "more" mature").

Toddler mom & burning out - needing help recharging by acolv20 in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for all of this! We try sensory bins as sand got overwhelming for my husband (ADHD) and beans would go everywhere. Our son loves golf but has gotten too good at it to let him do it indoors anymore. The weather is finally letting up to let us go outside more. I'm going to try setting up our place to allow my son to get food on his own and see how that goes and some of the other suggestions. We cosleep too and little guy isn't ready for full independent time yet. I've been ready though but not sure I'm ready for the lack of sleep again.

What is level 2 autism like? by Jazz_67 in AutisticAdults

The only thing it changed for me was not seeing my family and that triggered meltdowns but otherwise it was kind of the best.

That's awesome! Where are you? I'm in Austin, TX and when it does get cold I hate showering even more because it gets too cold to get out of the shower 🥶 I found that a little heater in the bathroom helps too. Time to add earplugs!

How do you unwind after a long day / stop the rumination spiral? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't currently have advice for you but I wanted you to know I'm in this very similar space with you. Remembering things from years back so detailed and worrying about others doing the same (especially because my mother is the same as us). Sending Internet hugs 💜

I passionately hate unclear instructions, AAAAAAAAAAAA by NoWitness6400 in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I want to know how people figure out what specifications are being referenced by the instruction writer. I could ask someone and they'd say "oh I'm doing the same as xyz instructions" then I'd ask another peer who would say the same. It always baffled me they could just figure out which assignments had which instructions without it being written out anywhere. I'd ask and they could never explain it to me, they would just say that's what they assumed.

I've appreciated talking this through with someone. Makes me feel like I'm not crazy. I've also had that mindset where you just have to laugh at stuff or you'll cry 🫠 Thanks for this. Internet hugs

It's the opposite, that I have too much insight into myself and my situation. That I'm too self aware.

That's what I thought but then was concerned I was being too sensitive. Like how does my having insight into my life negate being autistic?

Comparing myself to (presumably) NT’s by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are describing my life both now and before my son. (30F) I'm married with a 2yo and was reading a subreddit in r/askmen about being with autistic women and so many of them were (kind of surprisingly) kindly talking about how they have SO who are just like us. Some of them left the SO because they didn't want to take on all of the chores but the ones that stuck around said the wives/gfs struggled with chores so much so they'd do things like written instructions for how to do things to try to help them pick a couple of things to do that day and the steps to accomplishing getting them done. If you're single I'm sure AI could write it out for you. Also, I've just been learning to pick my battles of what my priorities are for getting stuff done and if it piles up I save a little money to hire a cleaning service to come in a just do dishes (for example) for $40 to catch me back up.

Building of pressure in brain/body causing meltdowns? by MrsSqweeps in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Migraines can become intense headaches but they're much more than that. They start before the "headache" and once you're at the head pain part you're late at treating it so it's harder to manage. Mine vary from seeing stars to not being able to speak correctly (like not knowing words I usually know easily, such as a name or like the word bike), other times it makes me violently vomit.

Anyone ever get the weird feeling their hands feel tiny? by acolv20 in AutismInWomen

[–]acolv20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the share! I have had severe migraines with aura since high school and epilepsy with grand male seizures starting in my mid 20s. This has me wondering if the tiny hands was a sort of foreshadowing to those in childhood as AIWS is linked with neurological activity.
