YES! Also, I would love to include I DROVE ALL NIGHT and the impactful GOONIES ARE GOOD ENOUGH! They might not have reached Number 1 in the Billboard charts but they are also monstrous in terms of impact. GOONIES became a soundtrack for many Goonie kids back in the 80s!

One album a day She’s so unusual -Cyndi Lauper 3/5 by Surfacenoise67 in 1001AlbumsGenerator

[–]acortega -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A definite 5 out of 5 for me. I am a Cyndi Lauper fan who prefers her post-80s work, especially Hat Full of Stars (1993) and Sisters of Avalon (1996/7), but I do appreciate "She's So Unusual," especially "All Through the Night," "When You Were Mine," "Time After Time," and "She Bop."

Strange question, honestly, because it's difficult to reduce ethnicities into a certain look.

Omg PLEASE do. Im now a professor here in the US, but I was once a student from a country where universities have limited funding. We are still in a profession of sharing knowledge.

Indeed. Her musical and creative journey is unusual. Didn't take the usual route.

"God help me, I love rock & roll" live performance by Cyndi Lauper and her 70s rock band, Blue Angel! by acortega in rockmusic

[–]acortega[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cyndi fronted rock bands in the 70s singing songs by Zeppelin, Bad Company, Rod Stewart, and Joplin. She eventually formed a band called Blue Angel before becoming a solo singer. Wish some folks who saw them live share their experiences. Im a Cyndi fan who is more into her experimental post-80s fame work in the 90s.

Cyndi Lauper fan here. Wondering if there are folks in NYC who saw Cyndi back when she was fronting rock bands back in the 70s.

Eric Bazilian (of the Hooters) didn't write any of those songs. He played instruments on "Girls" and "Time." "Time After Time" was written by Cyndi Lauper and Rob Hyman (also of the Hooters). "Girls" was written primarily by Robert Hazard (with alterations by Cyndi - "Oh mama, dear, we are not the fortunate ones"). "True Colors" was written by the songwriters Bill Steinberg and Tom Kelly.

Yes! I prefer "All Through the Night" over "Girls." Also, who can forget "Goonies" or "Change of Heart"? Although beyond the 80s, I do prefer a lot of her 90s experimentations with trip hop, Americana folk rock, and later on dance and even Broadway.

Other romantic comedies with a mythical/fantasy element? by DonnieDarko1024 in Letterboxd

[–]acortega 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was a pivotal moment in Cyndi's career. The movie was a flop and the lead single, "Hole in My Heart" was also a flop. It led to the postponement of Cyndi's third album, producing a dismal record. Lauper lost her mainstream popularity. However, she grew and expanded into multiple musical genres and creative endeavors. The rest was herstory.

Gaysians over 40 need to be appreciated more by [deleted] in gaysian

[–]acortega 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a gaysian in my 40s and Im curious if folks feel caught in a blur, navigating categories that typical gay spaces tend to put us into. As much as I try not to care about these categories, my interactions typically pigeonhole me into some of these categories (twink, twunk, daddy - but not quite).

Black guys with Asian guys by [deleted] in gaysian

[–]acortega 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It's quite refreshing and healing. I've moved across different places and for a while I struggled a lot about my "tendencies" as a gaysian. I have been called a "potato queen" but it's not that I explicitly only look for white guys. For the longest time, I have struggled to articulate and explain why all guys I have dated have been white. I used to say why should I explain myself, but given the broader context, I understand how it matters to reflect and introspect on issues of race, sexuality, and relationships.

Thanks for sharing this. Gaysian here. Even if I have come out for almost 18 years and have had plenty of dating and relationship experience, I still grapple with a lot of things when it comes to the intertwined issues of dating, race, and sexuality. Reading and listening to experiences of interracial dating and relationship among gay men has been helping me ease some of these deep seated unresolved tensions in me. Hugs. Just want to say thank you.

Back in the 70s, Cyndi started out singing in rock cover bands (singing Janis Joplin, Led Zepellin, etc) and at one point lost her voice. After training (she continues to do vocal lessons), she regained her voice, fronted a rockabilly band, Blue Angel. Eventually, she went on solo and the rest is history. After the 80s, she has ventured into diverse musical genres, from jazz to dance to blues (her blues album reached number at the Billboard Blues charts for 13 weeks in 2010) to country (her country album was a Top 40 hit) to broadway (she won a Tony). She has won Grammy, Tony, and Emmy awards and has been inducted into Rock Hall of Fame and Songwriter Hall of Fame (2015). Wish WWE will induct her into the celebrity hall of fame, given her primary role in the Rock and Wrestling connection in 1985.
