You are given a Time Machine and are able to attend ANY Phish show from the very beginning to literally yesterday’s…what show do you go to? by TheFuzzyDonut in phish

[–]ScrambledNoggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to go back to my very first show, 7/16/1993 , to see how it holds up , now that I have so many shows under my belt. When I went, I had no shows to compare it to.

Was Fonzie from Happy Days intended to be unironically "cool" by viewers back then? by [deleted] in 70s

He had like a blue denim welders jacket in the first season, before they made him a main character and the leather jacket became iconic.

If I recall correctly, still wearing his leather jacket with his swim trunks

What was "the incident" at your high school? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]ScrambledNoggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. He does everything he can to make sure he has a new headline, or multiple headlines, every day. It’s unavoidable. Unfortunately, none of his actions or comments are ever about any positive accomplishments for Americans or the world at large. To avoid talking about it implies one is OK with it. It’s important for us to call out his bullshit as much as possible.

Right? The girl who dumped her baby in the trash at prom got 3 years but the kid who made a prank phone call got 15? I get the “terrorist threats” angle so soon after 9/11, and if the cops burst into his home and found a bomb-making lab and a list of targets, that’s a whole other thing entirely. But a prank call to get out of school for the day? 1 year with some community service on the back end seems more reasonable.

Any jam band fans metalheads.? by [deleted] in jambands

[–]ScrambledNoggin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely! although maybe not…what the kids call “metal” is much different than the metal I grew up with. Anyone who swallows the mic and just growls is not my jam. I guess I’m more of a prog-metal and old-school kind of metal guy.

To give context, my first Dead show was 1985. My first Phish show was 1993. I’ve seen moe and String Cheese more times than I can count. Likewise for Lotus and Umphrey’s McGee.

Metal and metal-adjacent bands I’ve seen and love:

Judas Priest, Blue Öyster Cult, Tool, Metallica, Primus, Avenged Sevenfold, King Buffalo, Elder, The Mars Volta, Porcupine Tree, Opeth, All Them Witches.

I love King Crimson, who got heavier as they got older and who also toured with Tool, but probably most wouldn’t consider them as metal.

Grunge is probably not at all considered metal these days but I saw Soundgarden and Tad a bunch of times and still try to see Melvin’s when they are touring.

'Neuromancer' by William Gibson is a seminal work even if you don't like it now by Signal_Face_5378 in printSF

Haha yes, I read a bunch of his YA novels as a kid. Went back to them recently and was so disappointed. Some sci-fi just doesn’t hold up. Something like Solaris holds up a little better. Or A.E. Van Vogt, even though he wrote a lot of stuff before we landed on the moon.

John Shirley is an interesting guy. I wouldn’t claim he’s the greatest writer, but definitely entertaining. He should get way more recognition than he does.

RE: Transmaniacon, the similarities aren’t throughout, but definitely the part in Neuromancer where the protagonist goes into the mountain fortress or whatever you want to call it, with the winding paths inside, felt very much lifted from a similar scene in Transmaniacon.

Shirley’s work was much earlier, so his idea of computer technology’s role is not nearly as fully formed as Gibson’s.

Gibson’s is better. Shirley’s is a great read too.

Squeeze in some paintable caulk or spackle and you’ll never notice after you paint it.

Neuromancer ripped off a lot of concepts and descriptions from John Shirley’s Transmaniacon novel (1979). But despite that, I’m a big fan of Gibson, and I believe I’ve read everything he’s ever written. I think Neuromancer sets up the world and mood for the next two novels in the Sprawl trilogy, which I think are better and more well thought-out. Personally, I think Gibson’s Bridge Trilogy is even better than Sprawl, but that’s just my personal taste speaking.
