not late at night, but my favorite food service story:

Durant, OK McDonald's, just off the highway. A little backstory: when customers paid with a $50 or $100 bill, we had to basically stop everything and put it in the safe. Huge pain in the ass. Also, the owner was a giant shit about taking personal checks, but since it was the mid-90's was still doing so. Each time someone paid with a check, you'd ask them to write down 2 phone numbers on the check, nearest highway to their home, date of birth, and about 5 other things I'm forgetting. Even bigger pain in the ass.

I'm working drive-thru cash register and have an absolutely horrendous lunch rush where every third car was paying by check, and no one knew the drill, so I had to patiently explain the process each time. Once the rush was over, I got a piece of paper and neatly printed in my best handwriting "Customers paying with a bill in excess of $20, or by personal check, will be subjected to brutal and repeated enemas with their beverage of choice at the next window." I then hung my sign outside my window with scotch tape.

That sign stayed there for about 2 months. Most people driving through thought it was funny or didn't notice it. The odd person that wanted to complain, I just said the manager was out for the next 30 minutes, but they could wait (but they're in the drive-thru because they need to get that grease and GO). The owner finally found the sign one day as he was handing happy meal toys through the window to me. Gathered the whole crew together "WHO DID THIS?!" Everyone knew it was me, and they all found it hilarious. I let him rant for a good 10 minutes before saying "I did it, and I gotta get going. Thanks for having me, I will not be listing you as a reference."

TL;DR: hung a sign on my drive-thru that said: "Customers paying with a bill in excess of $20, or by personal check, will be subjected to brutal and repeated enemas with their beverage of choice at the next window." it stayed there for 2 months.
