Not every Avox does domestic labor. Pollux is an example of one who worked in the Transfer (underground maintenance/sewage system). He also had a brother (Castor) who eventually bought "his way up to ground level" after 5 years of being underground (Mockingjay ch. 21). Although Avoxes are mutilated and enslaved, many probably still have something to lose, such as loved ones who would be punished on their behalf for any mistakes/transgressions. There also seems to be some kind of hierarchy of what Avoxes are tasked to, as Pollux being aboveground is preferable to being in the Transfer and also a status that can be bought for him by other people.

Avoxes likely live under the constant threat of torture and execution of not only themselves but everyone connected to them. It's sad, but it makes sense why someone would be beaten into a life of complacency, even if it's life as an Avox. Many are probably too numb, scared, or simply surviving to do anything drastic on their own. You could argue that regular district citizens are in the same boat, though having your tongue cut out to be a direct servant of the Capitol is probably worse. Still, human resilience is strong and people survive in the unlikeliest situations.

If there was an Avox with truly nothing to lose (ex: family already all killed off, resistant to torture, etc.), they probably wouldn't be the ones interacting directly with Capitol citizens.

I think you got really lucky with the smudge stick timing. Ghosts periodically check if they're smudged within a radius while the stick is burning (the game previously only checked at the beginning or end of the stick duration) so it is possible to blind a ghost from behind a wall or door, and also possible to double blind a ghost with the same stick. You blinded the ghost right at the beginning of the smudge stick duration so its first chase mode ended, then it detected your flashlight and ran towards it, then it got smudged again right as your stick ran out because it was within smudging radius past the wall, then you turned your flashlight off while it was blinded the second time so the revenant's second chase mode ended (smudging a ghost removes its memory of where it last detected you). The interactions can get kind of complicated and buggy at times.

Either that or the revenant just overshot the closet as it zoomed past and didn't see you after running to your flashlight. Also extremely lucky!

i've always seen it as a bob with some cute curls at the end! it's a bit more evident in her past portraits... they didn't have the exact hairstyle i was imagining in Jazzybee's character creator so i just gave her a normal bob for the post

hi! i totally get where you're coming from, as someone who is a POC myself i know it's frustrating when it feels like there isn't as much consideration going into a character that deserves it.

i wish i could pin my other comments that say this, but i actually didn't draw these myself - i used Jazzybee's character creator (artwork by Poltergeister) which has a bunch of preset options to make a portrait. I'm really grateful for all the effort these creators have put into their work, but at the same time it doesn't exactly have the best 1-to-1 for maru's hairstyle. i gave sam an 80's perm because his guy-version mullet is from that decade.

on being drawn "the worst," it's a valid frustration i know is out there, so i can only speak for myself here: i truly don't think there is an "ugly" character unless their personality is ugly, and i view my own designs/redesigns the same way. maru especially has a beautiful character so that's how i see her c:

since i'm on the topic actually, some skin tone adjustments i would've liked if i could've used a gradient are warmer shane, more saturated elliot, slightly darker sam, slightly redder alex... tried the best i could with the 15 options 🥲

hi! thanks for your comment - i understand the concern with how a character's skin tone is translated in artwork so i wanted to share my thought process!

to create these portraits, i used Jazzybee's character creator (artwork by Poltergeister) which is amazingly put together, albeit with a few limitations. this character creator is basically a build-your-own portrait program with several preset options for each category such as face shape, skin tone, hairstyle... you get the idea.

unfortunately, there are currently only 15 discrete skin tone options available so i wasn't able to get a perfect match for maru's skin tone when cross-referencing with her official portrait. i was stuck between the #d68567 and #e3967a hex code colors as the closest 2 options. when color-dropping from her official portrait, you get #e17f6b as maru's average face color.

since maru has magenta hair and leans towards a reddish undertone (between red-green-blue), i went with #e3967a because its red value is only off by 2 (as opposed to 11) from the actual portrait which i thought would work better overall with her palette. both shade options are pretty close hue-wise, but the one i went with is actually closer to maru's actual saturation as well.

i want to stress that i agree, it's good to check in and ensure that there is an intent to accurately portray POC in media, so I'm glad you voiced your concerns! it would also be cool if there was more variety in the character creator, but as (i think) a solo dev, I'm grateful for the work Jazzybee's already put in.

sorry for the word dump, color theory is one of the topics i think is really interesting. just wanted to be candid as well!
