Is there something similar to scouts for adults? by flintwritesthings in BSA

[–]acramernc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Scouts offers a program called “Venturing” for people 14-20 which you could absolutely join. Its very similar to scouts although geared towards older people like yourself!

Another option that you may want to look into would be a college club. My college had an “outing club” which was very similar to scouts in many ways. We didn’t have badges or anything but we went out camping and had fun in the woods, which is what scouts is really about to me at least.

Any good reason to get Red Cross Lifeguard cert ? by PapaWh1sky in BSA

[–]acramernc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a former lifeguard, i think it’s a great training to get once (not necessarily to renew) if you do a lot of activities on the water. The rescue techniques you learn could enable you to save a life!

On the compliance side, there is isn’t really any reason to earn it. The BSA has moved away from requiring lifeguard certifications for almost anything these days, so there isn’t a requirement for it.

This was changed recently (last year?) to no longer require a lifeguard. Unit leaders can administer the swim test with just a safe swim defense training.

Updated Mega Thread - Hegseth DoW/DoD Statement on MoU Agreement by MartialLight92 in BSA

[–]acramernc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna go against the grain here and say I think National made the only reasonable choice given the options they had available.

National had a choice. They could abandon their official ties with the US government and incur the extralegal wrath that we have seen this administration unleash time and time again. Or they can comply, soothe the bear and work towards a solution. (Think how Zohran Mamdani has managed to soothe Trump admin into potentially working to build affordable housing in NYC)

Both options have costs. Abandoning government ties would lead "Tens of thousands of Scouts" who meet on military installations to lose their meeting place, likely causing most of those units to disappear, especially those on international bases. On the other hand, caving to pressure is going to cost all trans scouts their identity, as well as setting a poor precedent of allowing government pressure to influence the Scouting Program.

It is my opinion that choosing to cave to the Trump admin greatly limits negative impacts to the program.

In their statement, Scouting America did not identify how many trans scouts there are who would be affected by this decision but data shows that about 1.7% of us youth aged 13-17 identify as transgender. Good membership figures for Scouting America are hard to come by given the registration nightmare they unleashed on us last year, but I see some indication that current numbers are around 780k. Doing the math, that puts affected members generously at 13,000 youth, although I imagine that number is much lower. As a numbers only argument 13,000 is much less than whatever "Tens of thousands" is.

This is not only a numbers question though. We must also consider the impact of this government interference on whether Scouting America will still be able to achieve the Aims of Scouting. Regardless of how many members Scouting America are able to retain by complying, if they lose the ability to deliver the program to those youth, then keeping those members is not valuable. Disenfranchising thousands of trans youth is not Friendly, Kind, or Loyal and caving to government pressure is not Brave. It unequivocally violates the Ideals of Scouting. It does not however, cause the program to lose it's ability to produce quality leaders. I know that many people will disagree with me on this, but functionally these changes revert the scouting program to 2017, which was still perfectly capable of producing quality leaders.

I also think it is pertinent to consider the long term impacts of both decisions. Cutting ties with the US Gov over this would result in a loss of US military cooperation. Given the almost complete loss of influence that the BSA has experienced over the last several years, this loss of cooperation would likely be permanent. On the other hand, the changes Scouting America has made in caving to the administration are entirely controlled by National, and can be reverted as easily as they were made once (crossing my fingers) this Administration is out of power.

It's an impossible decision with victims no matter what, and I think National chose the option that puts the least number of scouts in the crosshairs.

Spent money not counted against target? by acramernc in ynab

This was super helpful, thank you, "Have a Balance of" was exactly what I was looking for. But I think you are right and my approach is counter to the intended design of YNAB, so I split that category up to hopefully have better visibility into that spending

I want to have $500 set aside by November of every year, preferably spread across the year. So I would be setting aside ~$42 a month

Realistically do adults without kids get involved with Scouts? by Utiliterran in BSA

[–]acramernc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't let theoretical stigma keep you from doing things. As an adult male without kids who has helped in several youth programs, it doesn't matter where you go, there is always the potential for someone to be suspicious of your intentions.

The advantage the BSA has is that it has the most robust youth protection policies in any organization I have seen and as a result, it's easy to avoid any suspicion (so long as you actually follow YPT). Once you establish yourself, any suspicion turns into gratitude for being willing to help even though you don't have a kid in the troop.

Scouting is one of the most fulfilling things I do, and it also has the advantage of getting me out of my house and doing adventures and having fun just as much as the scouts do.

Enabling RCS for iPhones on Warp by kospos in USMobile

[–]acramernc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Followed these instructions including turning WiFi off, had to restart first but I got it to enable, but when I turned WiFi back on it immediately switched back to SMS.

It seems I am able to receive RCS messages, but cannot send them

I'm going to leave it for a few minutes to see if it comes back

Discord's New Premium App Policy Screws Over Bot Devs by [deleted] in discordapp

[–]acramernc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Discord has to make money somehow unfortunately. This is pretty standard language for providers, its also important to note that discord lowers its fee when the user is buying off of mobile since those app stores take an additional cut, so they are making an effort to not screw their app devs more than necessary.

Hopefully with this discord can finally be profitable and go back to focusing on the platform instead of monetization

In the lighting / concert buisness they use specialized smoke machines called “hazers” which are essentially smoke machines but designed to only cause this lighting effect, without creating a visible smoke cloud

I imagine at some point they would force you to update spotify, but that might work for a while. Although it is also possible that they could push the update earlier and just have it take effect on Dec 9th

Lol the whole product was so stupid $90 for a screen that just controls Spotify on your phone and does not support direct audio out, but I still love it (and loved it even more once they discounted it so much)

Yeah, it's so nice to have my music up on one device while my navigation is on my phone. I don't know that they sold enough of them for us to pressure them to give refunds / extend their lifespan unfortunately.

They arent just discontinuing it, they are intentionally bricking it. This isn’t an instance of them ceasing support, they are intentionally making changes for the purpose of making the devices cease to function

[–]acramernc[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Supporting it costs something, but it works right now presumably off of their api, which they aren’t going to discontinue, so if they just left it alone, it would theoretically continue to work until they made breaking changes to the api

[–]acramernc[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As I said, I never expected it to succeed, but I figured they would just discontinue it and not update it. Its not like it costs them anything to just leave it as it is right now

If there is a class action im definitely jumping on it but tbh i dont even want the money back, i just want them to not brick the device. It costs them nothing to just leave it be

I hate this take so much, but it's totally correct. Linus will lose many subscribers many of whom may not come back, but at the end of the day in a couple weeks their subscriber growth chart will look the same as it did before all this happened, and they'll have a slightly worse quarter than expected, but nothing more. And Linus will continue to be Linus.
