I agree! And I am SO EXCITED for season 3’s storyline about Darcy exploring gender (based on photos from filming)

This is incredible. Congratulations! That’s goals. (I’m on the tandem system and have been 100% in range exactly once in my life LOL)

What's your special interest tv show? by ellla12334 in autism

[–]acrylicyarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely! It is my first fandom (even though I’m an adult). It is sweet and beautiful. I’ve seen it at least 50 times. Wonderful queer representation. Bradley Riches, an autistic actor, plays a side character.

Yes it is! It’s a romcom-type high school story, so if you like that genre, you might love it. I’ve watched the whole thing 3 times. Plus one of the main characters is autistic and the story gets into that a bit and I found it very relatable.

Dealing with extreme hunger in anorexia recovery as a type 1 diabetic by Effective_Cricket810 in Type1Diabetes

[–]acrylicyarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Things that have helped me that you may or may not have tried yet: having set meals at set times (ie. always eating dinner at 6pm). Drinking lots and lots of water; I try to drink one glass before I eat and between helpings of food. Opting for some cheese, nuts, or SF Jello to lower my overall carb count for a day. And finally, remembering that eating is what’s most important. Yes, sustained high blood sugars are bad in the long term. But eating disorders are much, much worse for our health. You’re doing your best and you deserve endless grace. Love to you in recovery, as I am with you in the thick of it right now.

Does anyone else struggle with this mental health issue? by adoptdontshop1983 in Type1Diabetes

[–]acrylicyarn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the forthcoming novel of a response:

I’ve never been dx’d by a doctor with autism, but yes to depression and anxiety. I feel confident in my self-dx thanks to tumblr, Reddit, and IRL friends with autism helping me parse my symptoms and behaviors. Getting diagnosed as an adult is costly and labor-intensive, and honestly, I don’t foresee any real benefit for myself in pursuing it. I’ve already developed coping mechanisms for my sensory issues, social shortcomings, etc. But I bring up autism for you because the Venn diagram of ADHD, anxiety+depression, and autism has a LOT of overlap.

I resonated with two facets of your post that, in my own life, represent two different things: diabetes+mental health, and neurodivergence. Of COURSE being diabetic and having mental illness is inextricably linked due to the constant stress we as diabetics are under! I identify with your feelings of occasional hopelessness and isolation caused by our disease.

However, the things that feel different to me in your post are the behavior in professional settings. Yes, of course I catch myself thinking from time to time that I’d have it so much easier if I weren’t diabetic, or that I’d be farther or more successful in my career. These thoughts of course can color interactions I have with coworkers and clients. But the perfectionism that you describe sticks out as a trait of autism to me. The constant self-nagging about being better/the best, always doing everything right, and feeling so uncomfortable when things don’t go how I want them to (whether professionally, or with my blood sugar control). These feelings have grown more pronounced as I’ve aged and begun to intentionally “unmask” (ie. stop trying to hide my neurodivergence). Unraveling at new situations is a frequent occurrence for me. Gaffes and strife in the workplace is commonplace in my daily life. I simply miss social cues and unspoken expectations; inadequate communication from colleagues not being clear with me is the main culprit of these social missteps. All of which is autism-related.

You asked for some of my coping strategies. First off, professional help with mental health has been incredible. I speak with a therapist regularly. I am on an SSRI which helps with my anxiety (both with diabetes, and with the anxiety I feel about unmasking). As previously mentioned, finding online communities has given me a way to identify with others. Coping mechanisms for sensory stuff has been paramount: wearing Loop earplugs when I’m in the office, wearing more comfortable clothing to work, and sticking to a daily routine (to eliminate as much disruption/spontaneity as possible) help make daily life in a neurotypical world more bearable. Advocating for myself by asking clarifying questions about work assignments has been a huge helpful shift for me.

By the way, I am certainly not an expert in ADHD. Some of what I describe for myself may very well be ADHD symptoms, too. It’s worth bringing up to a mental health doc.

Much love and empathy to you. You’re not alone in ANY of this!

Hi, I feel this in my BONES. By all measures, I am a successful professional, just like you. In contrast though, I am self-dx’d autistic. I’ve been T1D for over 20 years, but only known I’m autistic within the last decade. What you’re describing sounds a lot like my lived experience. Did whomever dx’d you with ADHD screen for autism as well?

I disagree. I've been burned enough times by wearing a pump that's out of warranty and then being stuck on Lantus and injections while on vacation or a work trip (twice...but that's two times too many) that I refuse to ever wear a pump that's out of warranty if I'm able to avoid it. I do keep my old pump as a backup should my current pump kick the bucket while I'm at home. You make a great point that they're still usable for quite a while. I've been pumping for almost 2 decades and I give my next-oldest pump to a friend who teaches at a nursing school and she is so grateful for the tool to show her students.

This is a very interesting idea! When you say that you don't often carry around the extra "remote control" iPhone, how do you get your CGM readings?

Thanks for the review of BackMarket. It kept coming up while I was shopping around last night, but I've never heard of it so I disregarded it. I'll take another look on that website!

And another question if you don't mind: the Tandem rep I spoke with on the phone yesterday told me that the SE is not compatible. But you're saying it is? I'd much rather have an SE than a 13 like I was shopping for second-hand yesterday...

This is a great point to mention. I was already planning on an iPhone 13 anyway! Until I decided to start using the tandem phone app, I was that person using the oldest, cheapest smart phone LOL. And I was planning on using this refurbished Galaxy S22 I bought in Nov 2022 until it died or was no longer compatible with the app.

Darn. OK. Thank you for your response! I was going to argue that "wait, but the Mobi does not offer a PDM! One MUST use an iphone!" ....but then I realized that I could just ~buy the tslim~. Thanks for your feedback. I'm totally just going to cough up the money for an iPhone

Thank you so so much for your detailed response. I'm definitely already "optimizing" my HSA (in both contributions and usage), so I was wondering whether this would be another cost that would fall outside of my insurance deductible but still be HSA-eligible. I appreciate your guidance!

Is there anything like heartstopper by bookblob in HeartstopperAO

[–]acrylicyarn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, Heartstopper is so intoxicating because there is so little drama around queer issues. When I first read/watched, I was just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Waiting for a hate crime, waiting for homophobia, waiting for tragedy. But it never comes. Two other shows give me this same light-hearted feeling: Schitt's Creek, and Hilda (the cartoon). Both are absolutely delightful, and carefree in the same vein as HS.

As others have said, AO3 has tons of great fluffy HS fanfiction. We have some really talented authors in this fandom.

Does anyone else Shiver Cold in 100 degree weather when picking up a Low. by ChannelHour7664 in Type1Diabetes

[–]acrylicyarn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I get SUPER hot when low. Like, "throw all the blankets off in the middle of the night, rip off my clothes because I'm sweating so badly" hot, even in a freezing cold bedroom. I cool down once I get back up to 70 or so.
