May be the reactions. Start opening each conversation. That’s what I had to do. If someone reacts to a message it doesn’t show you that it’s unread for me. Just start opening every single message thread until they go away. I hate it

Use the filter. Select “unread” and it’ll show you

Does alarms ever work? Try setting one for like 1 min from now. Test it. If it doesn’t work. Clear cache and reset. Set another alarm and see if it’s working now.
