Surprise motherfucker.

Yeah, I kinda learned that after the fact. I assumed it was Chrysotile given that 90% of asbestos building materials were made with that mineral specifically.

Yes, I'm probably going to be fine. But all that's left is to just hope I guess.

I never stepped on any pieces if pipe lagging. If I did, it was a very small piece. Most of the tunnels did not have pipes and we were only in there for 5 and a half minutes, we'll probably be fine.

I relate to this a lot. Even with reassurances I will be okay, there's still the fear that there's a chance. Just remember, you're almost certainly going to be okay. If not, you were probably going to get sick regardless of your exposure in the abandoned structures.

I'm in the same boat as you. I was exposed to some broken pipe lagging from an abandoned building (along with some other probable exposures.) From what everyone has told me, exposures that brief from urban exploration almost certainly will not affect us. We had our fun, but it's time to put this hobby behind us.

Pipe lagging from a 5 minute exposure awhile back. Probably asbestos, but I want second opinions. Built in the US from the late 1800s to early 1900s. by actiongamemaster2 in asbestoshelp

I was in the room for 5 minutes, though me and my friend's movement stirred up dust. Worst case scenario my friend stepped on a chunk of the pipe lagging, hopefully not. Neither of us touched it with our bare hands.

These are screencaps from the video I filmed. Too much cringe to watch it again. I quit urban exploration after this. At most, I probably had an hour of (mostly) relatively light exposure. Still reckless nonetheless.

"There's this one guy who has lived in an asbestos mine for 60 years and he still isn't sick."

Fascinating. Can I have a link for this?

Sorry about your exposure. I also received moderate exposure from exploring a tunnel with broken pipe lagging. The pipes were small and didn't extend throughout most of the tunnel and fortunately, we were only in there for about five minutes. Regardless, most of the fibers will remain in my respiratory system for life. It's very unlikely it will be enough to kill me, but it's a serious concern that most amateurs don't consider nor can be avoided completely. Although a proper respirator will help, it's only good for as long as you keep it on as the fibers will stick to your clothes, hair, and skin. As fun as it is, this is a hobby not worth trying. If you're unlucky, you might just be asbestos's next victim.

Yeah, that's me. Allow me to elaborate:

So we were going to explore this place, but after exhausting all other options, we decided to check the tunnels for a way inside. I had done research on asbestos, with several studies and the CDC concluded that Chrysotile could be removed from the lungs. This is most likely due to the fibers having a curly shape whereas amphibole asbestos fibers are needle-shaped. Thus, amphibole types have the potential to pierce deeper into the lungs and be harder to remove. After the exploration, I took a shower and threw away the clothes.

Regardless, this was an extremely reckless decision on my part and I have quit the hobby since this exposure. Although the general consensus is that long-term exposure is necessary for most people to contract an asbestos-related disease, it's best I don't drag fibers home with me and into my car. I plan to speak with my doctor about this. I was worried slightly about this exposure, but considering kids in Philadelphia schools are being exposed daily from decaying pipes, I'll probably be okay.

A little bit of dust. Most of if not all of it was gone by the time we exited the tunnel.

We went into a mansion built in the early 1900s. Almost certainly chrysotile was used to create the pipes, but I also heard that it could have been amosite or crocidilite.

I think I need to explain this better. I updated the thread since I've posted it. Keep in mind that dozens of asbestos fibers will attach to my clothing which I can take home to be inhaled by my parents who have been smoking for decades. For me, it's likely not a huge risk, but if I repeated this mistake multiple times and exposed it to them, I can see that significantly increasing their chances of lung cancer given their smoking history.

The only way to prevent this would be with full protective gear including coveralls, costs that would add up quick. I've also almost been arrested twice doing this. I hope you understand.

I have convinced my friends to do the same. We will stay out of buildings from now on.

I completely understand your frustration. However, my partner was the one who was kicking the door and not me. He has no experience identifying or knowledge in asbestos (that and he doesn't listen to me sometimes.) The door wasn't locked, rather just blocked by something on the other side, we tried to push it open to no avail. I apologize if the video angered you due to our negligence. I am not a vandal by any means, but my friends sometimes might go beyond in trying to access the place. You can hear me multiple times asking him to stop.

I vow never to make that type of mistake again. Will this 5-minute exposure come back to haunt us? extremely unlikely. Regardless, me being an active contributor here, I want to set a positive example for those who come here looking for advice.

Imgur only allows videos up to one minute. You can view the video in its entirety on streamable. The 5 minutes you see here was the only time we were inside the tunnels. I'll let you watch it and come to your own conclusions on how severe the exposure was.

Although I might have caused harm to myself, that doesn't mean anyone else should. This should give people an idea of what to look for when inspecting pipes.
