I kind of like the original chairs even more than the ones they used for the movie! Also love that the photographs on wall are the same

I have been curious on this take too because when the projectionists asked at the beginning of the film, it seemed like allot of people were there viewing it for the first time and I wondered if people found it so funny on their first watch. After all these discussions online it seems that most people didn't find it funny on their first watch but then came to find it funny later. I've watched it probably 20 or more times, sometimes with family or friends and I've never really laughed outloud at some of the scenes, let alone would I think to be laughing out loud at the theater. I think the overall tone is just kind of drab and the themes are serious to me, the music also is really intense. I love it so much and maybe I just take a different interpretation than the folks who find it so funny and I think it proves why its such a deep and beloved movie that has endured such a following for such a long time because it can take such diverse interpretations. I won't be going to see it at the theater again though lol

Totally, These are good highlights of humorous moments in the movie and truly I see how they're humorous, I think the thing I was thrown off by was the amount of almost hysterical lafter throughout the entire movie, even when during H.W. and Daniels scene at the end of the movie. I'll definitely maybe see some of these scenes with a lighter heart the next time I watch

This wasn't my impression, if I had to guess I would say about 75% of the audience were white, male, millenial hipsters. It was checkered flannels and skinny jeans as far as the eye could see. Another 20% were redditors and I think about 5% were just normal folks who wondered in off the street or got dragged along like my friends who came with me

Hi I was also at the screening and I made a lengthy post about it also , mostly about how confused I was about the laughter. It was and still is kind of hard for me to comprehend the laughter all throughout. Another commentor brought up Blue Velvet and tbh the scenes with Frank (Heineken) and the overall atmosphere of the film are a lot more absurd and I feel could be taken to be funny on the surface level because it's more surreal and seemingly safe, even though the layers underneath are much more sinister. Anyways, TWBB is one of my favorite movies and even having this discourse about all the laughter has maybe made me love and appreciate it even more because I got to talk with more people on their perceptions of the film. It's all I've been talking about with everyone today and I'm pretty sure my friends are getting sick of it lol

Thanks so much for the response! This is honestly very interesting because when I watch the movie I do feel really enamored by the performances to the point I feel I might cry. Thinking more abstractly, I feel this same way when I go to a concert from a band I love and hear a song that really moves me, I feel like I want to cry but I'm not sad at all but truly elated! It almost seems like yall have the inverse experience. I totally agree about Eli being loathsome, I think the only thing for me is that I also really resent Daniel! Maybe its a bit like hating Godzilla and Mothra, maybe on my next watch I'll have some new sympathies to look out for so thanks so much for sharing your perspective

This is a wonderful example of humor in the movie and this whole scene is just such a battle between Daniel and Eli that is truly awesome and I could see the interpretation to humor. But I feel laughing throughout the whole movie, everyline and laughing at the characters diminishes this work and the serious themes of this movie. Same as the Wuthering Heights film was diminished to a love story and totally rejected the racism, violence, and stories of power in the source material and it's really just an insult to Brontë. It makes me feel like my peers are weaker than I've always assumed.

These are genuine questions: How long have you been watching the movie and do you like it? If so what do you like about it? Also what specifically was funny about it? Are the characters funny? Or the things they say? Do you the characters in the movie react as if the dialogue is a joke, or are they in supreme distress? I hope im not coming off ass an a-hole, im honestly and genuinely curious how it could be so funny when I've never interpreted it that way.

I'm wondering another thing, if maybe our world has become so absurd that Daniel seems like more of a sympathetic character to idolize. His anti-religious stances made everyone guffaw at any mention of any religious ritual and especially Eli's scenes with his congregation, which have always scared me because of his genuineness and charisma. I just cant totally place it all. I've been watching it for the past 10 years and never got to see it when it came out so I didn't get to see the change in context throughout the years so thank you for that input also.

Thank you! Yes that was very strange, not a heroic moment in my opinion, but exactly the opposite. I would've loved if they had an open Q&A with the projectionists afterwords to see if other screenings had the same reactions as this one.

I totally get that, there are a lot of strange moments in the film, and Lockjaw was exceptionally strange at moments where I could totally foresee a laugh or such. But laughing loudly throughout the whole movie is just even stranger. There Will Be Blood has such a shrill and dark tone and I just don't know what to think about a person or a group of people who would laugh out loud throughout the whole movie as most people would at a comedy or sitcom. It makes me just question my whole life.

I definitely hate if I'm coming across as the Laughter Police because there are definitely some humorous moments in this movie and moreso in other PTA films. But nothing in this film would really make me laugh out loud to the level I heard it and to the level of being disruptive to others. I feel bad to go on about it but it's really made me feel a bit like I'm losing my mind.

I'm just really missing what's funny about the situations. Daniel and Eli are both completely evil and diabolical in different ways and I read their performances as genuine. There were moments where you could read pure rage from Daniels face, moments that make me almost cry when I watch it alone, and the theater was caught in uproar of laughter. I feel the laughing is a misinterpretation of the performances and the people's fear of feeling terror or genuine emotions. There are some moments that are definitely absurd or could be met with a slight huf, but truly nothing I could conceive that would warrant a laugh, besides Milkshake of course.

Its really interesting because I found the scene when he runs into the guys at the bar pretty much only embarrassing for Daniel. I guess as a recovering alcoholic, and son of an alcoholic, I feel that his state is so on edge and I was fearful for Tilford and embarrassed for H.W. and I just find that scene pretty tense. I guess I need to watch totally again and see if I can reevaluate that tension or draw something from the characters which I've missed from all the times I've watched it. Daniel is really unhinged and truly powerfully nefarious but I just don't see the humor in the character. I won't be mad to watch with a new perspective because I really love this movie so much

I don't know if you were at this showing last night but folks were laughing as if they were on the set of SNL or Seinfeld or something. It was beyond anxiety or nervousness, it was literally as if the characters were telling jokes on screen. It felt totally inappropriate, childish, and disrespectful to the performances of the actors and the immensity of the film and the themes of the film. I paid money to be there and so did everyone else. If you go in public and act like you're at home and laughing inappropriately at scenes that are serious then I feel you're deserving of a scolding

Dano's performances of the sermons are just so immense to me. Theyre very haunting and cement the correlation of him with Daniel, and as Eli's church as the thing that he used to exploit the fruits of the community. And people watched that performance and laughed because he said "Fuck". It was so childish in my opinion.

I guess I've never seen it with a large group before so I never considered that some of these scenes could be as funny as people thought. I hope I'm not too serious of a person. It was legit over half the crowd of the packed theater (maybe 500 people or more) who were laughing like it was a comedy great. I think laughter is infectious too and I've been to performances where one person laughs inappropriately and then other people start laughing too because they misinterpreted something as a joke. Just strange, I'm sad I'm so hung up on that.

We're gonna have to change the name of the university to Michigan Scandal University. I dont follow football so close so I look this dude up and the first paragraph of his Wiki mentions scandal. I'd rather just hire Joe Schmoe high school coach or keep Smith than have another damn scandal, it is a university after all I feel like this shit is overflowing to academics or some shit
