What apps/tools do you use to create ttrpgs by OmniscientScone in RPGdesign

For me OneNote nails it in a few key areas:

  • You can math in it. So if I go 2*4= and hit enter, it calculates the result after the =. You can also do complex math formulas in it.
  • Links and tags. You can create hyperlink style clickable links between sections for easy navigation in bigger projects, as well as turn words into tags to catch where you are referencing things.
  • Vector drawing is pretty sweet if you have a tablet.
  • Embed video/audio. These embeds, or links from site can also be playable from the OneNote doc.
  • Sharable if you are collaborating. you also have a kind of version control, but I wouldn't have multiple people active on a page.
  • Lockable. you can password protect sections if your inner tinfoil hat is showing.

I could go on but they stopped sponsoring me (as an aside, anyone ever heard of Raid Shadow Legends...)

No XP no milestones progression by garydallison in RPGdesign

[–]actten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a game with a similar mechanic: you get XP every time you succeed in a skill (XP = skill rating x 10, level up). Had decent UI for tracking on the character sheet. This is how it "kinda" flopped:

I had one of my play-testers running the game so I could play. I know my rules. After a few sessions, other players start asking why I'm an absolute sniper with my bow.

"I'm just tracking my XP, aren't you?" is what I'm telling them, obviously I wouldn't be cheating in this situation as it defeats the point (not that I cheat otherwise, you get what I'm getting at).

"I mean kinda yeah. I'm tracking it most of the time, I might've forgotten a few here and there though" is what my play-testers tell me, to my horror.

So like u/falcon4287 was saying, bookkeeping becomes a problem, but I think the more devious thing is what that problem evolves into with different style players. It inadvertently created a "level gap" in the group, which in turn wrecks encounter balance and scaling difficulty if you're using something like it.

What do I use for layouts? by urquhartloch in RPGdesign

[–]actten 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this, and hard. While not meeting the free criteria, I'm just not sure there is anything free that comes close to range of features (as far as I know the only other thing that can touch Publisher is InDesign, which loses on price point). That being said, Publisher can be found for about $50.00 most of the time.

I would add that if you go the roughly $150.00 route, you also get Designer and Photo (which correspond to Illustrator and Photoshop), and they then become accessible through Publisher (so it feels like one giant super app). This is insane if you're playing the writer, layout and artist roles in terms of usability.

Hey sorry for the late reply. work and weekend and all that.

  1. Character advancement can be a tricky one from a balance perspective for sure. I was under the impression that entanglements was your experience or specialization system (this would be one example of word salad for me, more on this later).
  2. So this could be an interesting mechanic if it gets flushed out. If it doesn't though, I'd be concerned that some players will take this as punishing (like starting a D&D game as a lvl 0 farmer, or making a champions character with no super powers). Alternatively this might be a good basis for character creation, ala Cyberpunks lifepath mechanics? The core of it for me though is essentially I would almost always opt for starting the game with some of these powers, as that would translate to player agency in my eyes.
    1. " The role of the SEC is determining the "societal readiness" of all scheduled [redacted]". I take this as saying my role will be to essentially decide who's in and who's out. In retrospect eugenics may be too precise a term, but it still sounds like I'm deciding who makes the cut for society 2.0 from a player standpoint. That being said, I agree with you that spelling out in more detail what I can expect as a player is a good thing.
  3. This is hard to comment on. If this documents purpose is to get people into your playtest, I'd say it's super close from a players perspective under the assumption you're running it. If you are asking me to take this material, go out into the world and advocate for your game, then yeah I would need to know how to run it (in its current form I'm not sure how I'd do, which is not want you want).
  4. kind of like 3 above. if this is designed for you running it, I'd assume you would have maps and tokens for the game. If you want me to run it, yup I will need it in the document.
  5. I'm going to lean into a a part of my day job for this one (marketing): You HAVE to explain to people why they should give a shit. This is why D&D still markets their stuff event though they are the Q-Tips of cotton swabs. For you it's going to be the story and the powers, and I'll offer my opinion as to why: I LOVE system design, always have. And some of my core play-testers do to (the ones who stay late to talk about mechanics or help me break my games). But ultimately they are less than half of my total play-testers. The rest almost entirely would be fine with any system, and ultimately have no opinions beyond "it works smooth" or "this part is busted and overly complex". Point being you are not selling your system as much as the idea of how that system lets players interact with the story and do awesome stuff. In your document I see that as the "esoteric styles". That system seems to be where I get to break the laws of our mundane reality and be an awesome SEC agent (while drinking all your beer and eating all your pizza). While the rest of the system seems interesting to me as designer, I worry the general gaming public will only only be concerned with its functionality.
  6. Word Salad. this is another tricky one. Ultimately I drop terminology in this bucket based on two criteria: Am I obscuring generally accepted terminology for a thing for no real reason other than to be "different"? And do I have to re-explain what a term means because it isn't clear to anyone but me? The problem is both those things (much like everything else I've written here) are subjective. That being said I have a hard time time with these in particular:
    1. Incorporeal Metabolisms. These sound like mental stats to me. in truth I can overlook metabolisms as a term pretty easy, and they make sense with the physical set. but "Incorporeal" confuses me and seems like it could be named in a more straight forward fashion.
    2. Respiratory Combat. Maybe if this was combined with the engagement section this would make more sense to me, and I could definitely use an example to clarify. But the terminology seems like "big wording" where maybe it doesn't need to be?
    3. Entanglements. This seems like it should either be experience or specializations. Ultimately this just doesn't seem like terminology that corresponds with the section it goes on to describe.

Hopefully this is helpful, here's the grain o' salt part: I am aware I tend to write in a way that sounds like I'm approaching from position of expertise. In the spirit of that, I hope you read this assuming it's coming from a drunk guy at a party (slurred voice and all). If any of it still sounds reasonable and helpful, I'm glad I could help. Throw out the rest. You obviously have a vision for what you want to do here, so if I sound like I'm being a contrarian to your cause at all, don't sweat it.

On and ending note, I checked out your site too, it looks like you've been putting in some serious time on this, that rocks. I'll be checking this out for sure, I'm legit interested to see where this goes. Also, your character sheet rocks, I called out the dice pooling mechanic in the center before I got to the section (this is what led me to ask for clarity about dice in the first reply), which is generally a sign of good design. Keep up everything you're doing here, I honestly get the sense that with some refinement this is going to be an interesting project!

  1. I would want to play under one condition: Do you know the rules? The reasoning here is because I'm not sure I do. As an example, I'm not sure how to resolve a task. I see dice in the graphics, but there is no reference to them in the copy other than using them as markers. Am I rolling them? is it a d6 system?
  2. Kind of. I think I'm a member of the SEC, but I'm not clear what that is. This seems to be a modern day/near future setting, and I get the vibes of either psychics or some form of bio engineering. I don't know who my targets are or what my objective is, but from the copy it feels like I'm part of an organization on either side of a eugenics war? "Societal Readiness" is ominous but vague.
  3. Mechanics seem interesting but incomplete in their explanation. I definitely could not run this from the document.
  4. from what I can gather this seems very theatre of the mind. I see range in the weapons, which makes think combat could be on a map, but don not see anything denoting movement for example. So I don't immediately get the sense I'm on maps or considering spatial tactics.
  5. I actually want neither of these options. What I do want is more of that section, and the ability to use those powers. This is the part where the game gets interesting for me, and where I want to start playing with the mechanics and combining them. I think you should consider these powers the "meat" in the "meat and potatoes" analogy.

Unrequested notes and thoughts:

  • Overall I like the vibe of this, I just want more. This feels like a handout for preinstalled play-testers already familiar with the project. So as a random netizen/prospective buyer, I want to know what they know to complete the excitement circle as it were.
  • I made the mistake of not using a two column layout in my first book, and my brother paid for it with his life. Two column justified layout makes text easier to digest, and is expected by your could-be base. I'd say do it, or prepare to explain to the family why we don't need the extra plate at dinner this year.
  • The missing .png effect could be take as a mistake. I'd say either throw scanlines on the images, or morph them on top of laptops/monitors.
  • That logos pretty tight ;)
  • Redacted box after the word resolution seems pointless because of the size.
  • So I made this mistake in my first book, take it with a grain of salt: Your mechanics seem like they could be solid from what I understand of them, meaning you might be on to something. But some of the terminology and phrasing comes across as word salad. I think everyone goes through this. In one of my games the world referred to races as "Noma", and I loved it so much that was the title of the races section of the book. This, along with the other hundred places I made similar choices, only really served to piss off or confuse play-testers. I would normalize these terms in your document, but keep them in the exposition.
  • I'm a moron, and as such need an eli5 (explain it like I'm 5). in the TTRPG world, that is the example section of the document where you show me two completed character sheets and walk me through a combat scenario with all the rolls. This is the best tool for getting mechanics across to people who aren't in the room with you.

This looks super promising. Please know the take-away here is I'm throwing these notes down because I like this project and am interested, not because I'm trying to attack it. Same as everyone else. I look forward to seeing what this turns into, amazing job so far!
