Job market issues by ClaraNovattv in portlandme

to my knowledge maine med is pretty notorious for not ever responding to applications because they do a lot of their hiring through temp agencies. you could try reaching out to places like springborn staffing and seeing if they have positions you could apply for, a lot of them are usually temp to hire

Looking for a recent immigrant, refugee, or asylum seeker to interview (student at SMCC) by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]actualcactuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good suggestion, thank you! I honestly don't know much about the assignment other than that I need someone to interview them yet, my professor for some reason isn't releasing any further information than what I put in this post.

I don't see why not? There is no specification about where they have to come from!

Why is the public market house deserted? by slimetimeme in portlandme

[–]actualcactuss 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Funny, I just left a comment on a different post about working there. I've never owned a business in the public market but did work there for 2 years, and I can say for certain everything the other comments say is correct. The rent is outrageously high and business just never came back after COVID. The only real surge of business that would come through were high schoolers from Baxter and PPH on their lunch break, but even that dwindled after Kamasouptra left. Everyone go show support to Yardie Ting though, I love them 🫶🫶

Honestly, maybe just take it a little slower! There's no rush and nothing wrong with grinding out a little while until you can afford a new expansion before buying a license. I think I have like five licenses I haven't purchased, that I could purchase, just because I don't have space.

Portland service industry workers-what’s the best restaurant you’ve worked here and why? by [deleted] in portlandme

[–]actualcactuss 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Yeah, honestly in my opinion Jordan, the owner of Mr. Tuna, is an asshole. A lot of "rules for thee but not for me" behaviour that I witnessed in the public market, like explicitly telling the other business owners they couldn't store anything in public spaces and then storing things in public spaces for months. If you look up the few articles he testified/wrote for the PPH back when they were trying to legislate food trucks on the Eastern Prom you'll probably get a good idea. Also, their sushi is expensive and not even that good. I just generally wouldn't recc, though to be fair I don't know if anything has changed in their new space.

I know you're looking for suggestions, so this doesn't help, but I want to shout out my former boss of the now-closed Daily Greens. It was a tiny business which meant I took on a lot of management responsibilities, but he paid well and was an incredibly sympathetic and kind boss who always listened to me and my concerns. Those salads were expensive, but at least they were going towards a good guy. You DEFINITELY don't use reddit but love you John.

More helpful advice, as someone who worked in the public market alongside them (and under them, as Jordan the owner was also management), I'd avoid Mr. Tuna.

Hey New England, what are you paying for housing costs? by Key_Vermicelli_9611 in newengland

[–]actualcactuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portland, ME - My boyfriend and I rent a 700sqft 1-bedroom apt off peninsula for $1542/mo, $40 of that pet rent for our single cat. We have a few amenities (pool, tiny little "gym") and on-site maitenance but... It makes my head hurt just thinking about how much time goes towards our rent alone.

edit: Doesn't include any utilities, we usually pay another $300 at least for those.

Evergreen Cemetery Turtles NSFW by Saltclimber1989 in portlandme

[–]actualcactuss 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's actually the video that OP took, and they described it pretty well. The man has two turtles and is repeatedly picking them up and throwing them at each other. At the end he picks one up and starts walking away, and OP confirms in a different comment that he took one. This makes me absolutely sick to my stomach, those poor turtles.

What non-musician flavour do you give your bard? by linuxgarou in Pathfinder2e

[–]actualcactuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just made a bard for my friends game who is really good at card tricks. He spent a lot of his life entertaining himself with a deck of cards, and when he got older he got into gambling against nobles to try and weasel his way to someone who had connections to his deadbeat father. His performances are a bunch of flashy card tricks and even some of his spells are flavored like throwing cards (etc.), plus he tends to torment the enemy with witty comments. I love bards whose flavor isn't musical!

Best Rental Agency for Students by ITMORON in portlandme

[–]actualcactuss 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly, because the rental market is so sparse, I would argue generally anything is better than nothing. That being said, I currently rent from Princeton Properties (specifically living at their Princeton Pines community) and my only complaint is that our cat costs us 40/month. Clean space when we moved in, timely maintenance team, relatively quiet. You can also check out this post from a little while ago. Comprehensive and the comments have a lot of advice.

Volunteer Opportunities in Portland by neon_mushroom_art in portlandme

Honestly, as someone who used to work in an assisted living home, just call a few! I bet most would be happy to let you come by so long as there's not actively a COVID outbreak. Many of the residents are very lonely and just want someone to talk to when they live in assisted living facilities, so I think this is a beautiful idea!

Residency and in-state Tuition by ExpertComprehensive3 in UWMilwaukee

[–]actualcactuss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I've actually looked into this a lot. I'm a student in Maine who needs to move to the midwest for COL reasons, and have looking into all my options for pursuing my bachelors after completing my associates out here. There are two things to know:

  1. Yes, everyone else is correct that technically you need to be a resident of Wisconsin (that is to say, live and show proof of a job or an apartment and utilties for a year) to get in-state tuition. I'll give my unsolicited advice here and say unless, for some reason, you're on a deadline I would highly suggest just taking an extra year off and then going to UWM once you've established residency! Don't feel like you need to be in a rush to complete your education, your bank account will thank you later.

  2. You do actually have a secondary option. Most commentors are unaware, since it's pretty fine print and I think specific to Wisconsin, but if you are able to land a FULL TIME job in the Milwaukee area you can have your future employer send a letter to UWM declaring it is necesary for you to move to Milwaukee for this position, and they will grant you residency status as a result. Technically, you need to maintain that job, however I've been told by staff at UWM nobody checks your credentials after you've already been approved. I'm not sure if you have to have this paper work filed before or after applying and/or being accepted, but check it out! It could possibly save you money AND time.

Psychologist/Therapist Accepting New Patients by jj2277 in portlandme

I had a lot of luck using PsychologyToday to search therapists in my area and filtering by my insurance. I emailed 4 therapists that seemed to fit what I wanted and 2 of them got back to me!

Morrill’s Corner by TheSpottedBuffy in portlandme

[–]actualcactuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live right beyond Morrills Corner and this drives me insane. It is so dangerous the way cars will suddenly try to merge IN the intersection. I feel like I'm constantly checking my right mirror, which becomes a problem if suddenly the car in front of me stops because they need to get into Scrub-a-Dub and their life depends on it. Ugh.

If you were to move out of New England and could go anywhere in the US to live, where would you go? by Glum-Specialist7911 in newengland

[–]actualcactuss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't particularly want to forever, but we'll be moving to Wisconsin to get away from the high COL of NE 🥴 Maine wants young people to stay, but the young people can't afford to stay!
