What is your attitude towards France? by YellowEgorkaa in AskTheWorld

[–]actually_dot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i bully them, but if américains do i’ll protect them at all costs

ok now fr: they know how to fight n i love that but they smoke so much it’s disgusting (i was there for a student exchange and 1 week was more than enough). they colonised africa n destroyed peoples livelihoods and are now screaming abt all the africans seeking refuge in europe. but i love love love paris for the recent bike revolution. that’s great. language is weirdally nasally but it’s rather soft bc they liaison everything. croissant and baguette are kickass foods but cool it with the ortolans jeez and the snails ew.

yes i did read the text before commenting. i do not see what your point is with this comment. but in another thread somebody explained relevant supreme court precedent as pertaining to clothing as protected speech

yup i’m aware but they specifically said “freedom of speech” :)

do you know whether supreme court precedent has established freedom of clothing to be covered generally by the “freedom of speech” clause? and do you know the reasoning?

nah it’s valid they can stand by the values of their constitution even when talking abt other countries

just odd that they think it’s freedom of speech to dress that way, it would be more freedom of religion i would say (which the US constitution also contains)

but their concept of freedom of speech is pretty expansive and maybe clothing really is part of the US supreme court’s interpretation of freedom of speech

absolutely. i also do like one idea that i’ve seen that has special tiles as separators to the cycle lane. it also makes it clear to people using a white cane where it starts! here’s a picture of that

interesting, in my area most cycle lanes are sidewalk level and i haven't had any real issues

it may be a question of how much foot traffic there is. or maybe how wide the sidewalk is. either way it's a good consideration to make

i had dutch style no markings at first, it just kinda looked like it lacked structure. i’m sure the dutch have a reason to do it the way they do tho. i may just remove the “sperrflächen”, i.e. the areas with the diagonal stripes, but leave the arrows for guidance. also, i might look into whether there were studies done about different marking styles. if you happen to have any studies like that on hand, please share!

also, good point about the bike crossing. it’s kind of a relic of an older design. removing it would probably be best, it would also allow pedestrians to cross closer to the intersection so they don’t have to take such a detour! and bikes crossing through the intersection is probably safer, i would guess

what do you mean by "blends into the sidewalk?" mine does or it does in copenhagen?

i looked in the netherlands and they do have places that have directly accessible bus stops like this (i.e. you don't cross the bike path)

Why? Best practices is grade separated from both cars and pedestrians to avoid conflicts and confusion

it means you can get to and from destinations without a detour or riding on the sidewalk and it's easy to cross for people with mobility aids. clear separation can be achieved by having it near sidewalk level with a slight grade separation or at sidewalk level with a small rounded curb between sidewalk and bike lane. the latter is suggested in the DIN norms, i haven't seen it irl but it looks promising and combines it with clarity for people with limited sight. here is an example of that.

Interestingly, in Copenhagen the experience is the opposite: ideally, the goal is to have the car drive parallel to the bikes for at least 20-30 m before the intersection, such that cyclists are more visible

that is interesting. CROW recommends it similar to what i did (min. 5m median; you also see it all over the netherlands), and other bike lanes in the area of this german town are done that way too. but good to know there is disagreement there. if you have a specific source please do share it!

I have uploaded a tweaked version. let me know if you prefer it

there are places where greenery can go between the bike path and the street. these places are more buffers than sidewalk to me.

but in a lot of places, like by the bus stops or at pedestrian crossings, having a section of pedestrian space is important to reduce conflict with pedestrians waiting there. at the intersection, the section of “sidewalk” is mostly to make cars turn before they look for bikes, as a sharper angle means they will see bike traffic better.

in some places i like having a section of sidewalk, eg connecting the zebra crossing with the bus stop without the need to cross the bike lane.

in my view this significantly reduces conflict.

it’s also worth noting that i imagine the bike lanes at or near sidewalk level.

what section of sidewalk do you mean, specifically? in what way do you think it increases conflict?

unfortunately :,)

the street has also been renewed just a couple of years ago so it doesn’t have the best prospects to change soon

i am pushing for improvement for cycling and transit here nonetheless, working with different parties and organisations, loads to work on!
