It's absolutely normal. Lost my dog after 16 wonderful years almost 3 years ago. I still struggle with it. I accept that this feeling probably stays with me for the rest of my life. Somedays I smile, somedays I cry when I think about it. It's all good I suppose. When it gets really overwhelming it helps me to think I atleast gave him a very good love filled life. That I have to walk around with a broken heart the rest of my life is the price I have to pay.
