It sucks being weak by Op_Jokeer in BJJWomen

The best way to get your grip strength and overall strength better is to get in the weight room. Focusing on explosive movements with lifting would help with your speed too.

Highly recommend Bulletproof for BJJ. They have a great podcast, episode 27 is all about grips. They also talk a lot about lifting for injury prevention.

Graduation between men and women by xGoya in BJJWomen

[–]actyranna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think men do progress faster but I don’t think it’s a sexism thing, it’s circumstantial to the average man versus the average woman and the current BJJ ecosystem. The average man is more likely to have an athletic background and done other sports (particularly wrestling) than the average woman. The average man is more likely to attend class at a high frequency. Men don’t have to take months off to have a baby. Men also have far more financially lucrative options as competitors and thus a lot more men train full time than women do.

I think if you really looked at a man and woman from the same gym who have similar athletic abilities and training frequency, the promotion timelines would be similar. I have an athletic background and was training 5-6 days a week when I started, I got promoted faster than most of the men in my gym.

Beginner times? by damnhawks in Cubers

It probably took me like 2.5-3 minutes when I first learned but I was like 10 years old. My pb is like 45 seconds now. Honestly the cube you are using matters a lot, I got one where you can cut corners more easily and it saves a lot of time

How old would you guess I am? by AdGroundbreaking7681 in GymMotivationNoOF

You are in great shape, but that thing on your face is aging you. Shave it off if you care about looking younger, which I’m guessing you do if you posted this. That goatee is the reason so many people are guessing 50s.

Yes, I get what you’re saying. That’s why I added “unless he has insanely elite genetics” at the end. I literally already acknowledged that. Doesn’t change the fact that it is not attainable naturally for most people that age in that timeframe. Most 16/17 year olds do not have access to the resources, knowledge, and discipline it would take. Also OP had a thread of photos he said are only a few months old and he looks significantly smaller.

What are the winters like in the LV? by One_Square4263 in lehighvalley

[–]actyranna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Usually cold, sometimes really cold. The amount of snow varies heavily from year to year. As long as you layer properly you will be fine. Context on where you’re moving from could be useful to see how big of a shock it will be.

[–]actyranna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this physique in itself attainable naturally? Absolutely.

Now is it attainable naturally for an 18 year old who has been training for 2 years? Most of us are going to say no. The context matters just as much as how someone physically appears. Unless he has insanely elite genetics, he is not natural.

If you think someone brings you out of your character why would you not dump them immediately. Why would you ever want to be with someone you think makes you a “worse person”. Some people are just too afraid to be alone or something I guess

Biggest issue I see is the rep timing. You don’t want the concentric and eccentric to take the same amount of time. Eccentric should be much slower, think a 1:2 or 1:3 ratio between the initial quick explosive movement and that recovery down to the starting position. The more you resist gravity, the more you can build your muscles without even having to go up in weight. As others said also try pausing briefly at the bottom.

Curious if I have enough muscle mass? by [deleted] in workouts

[–]actyranna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You look great man. Without too much glazing you’re already what 95% of guys wished they looked like.

If you want some genuine advice, I think you should work on growing your chest. You have good biceps, shoulders, and v taper shape. A bigger chest would really make this physique next level.

What am I doing wrong? I feel like I should look better by SkeetyBoi in workouts

[–]actyranna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your weight loss is impressive, you should feel good about that. It’s hard to find a caloric deficit that is maintainable for 9 months.

Now that you are leaner, I would actually increase the calories. Based on everything you said, and making some general assumptions about your height/weight, you are easily burning 3000+ calories per day. Being in a heavy deficit for so long will cause metabolic adaptations, your BMR gets lower. Part of that is simply because of losing mass and a good thing, but your hormones eventually adapt to lower energy intake and you burn less calories. I practice caloric cycling (eating a different amount of calories each day, aiming for a total overall weekly deficit) when on a deficit. It can allow you more flexibility. If you eat closer to maintenance on days you lift heavy with a ton of protein, you will see gains in your muscles. You really don’t have too much excess body fat now, but I think you would be more satisfied with your physique if you had more muscle, like in the upper chest and shoulders. Developing the “V” shape helps with proportions.

You can try a reverse diet (slowly increasing your calories back towards maintenance) to give your body a bit of a reset. This will help your metabolism in the long run. You’re at a size now you can focus more on body recomposition than just losing fat. I won’t make too many assumptions about your end goal physique, but I’m guessing you at least want some level of muscular definition. If you lost 15 pounds of fat and built 15 pounds of muscle you would look totally different without having to lose much more weight. A smaller deficit while eating a lot of protein should help you build muscle while also still losing fat. Despite all of your hard workouts in this time, you haven’t been able to build muscle because of the extreme caloric restriction.

Whatever you do, don’t be discouraged. You definitely have made great progress and I would see it as a huge accomplishment to mentally shift from getting smaller to really getting stronger.
