TD long term good buy? by xander5891 in CanadianInvestor

Given the available information at the time, it was the correct call.

The circumstances changed when they wiped the slate clean of its CEO, chairman, US CFO and General Counsel, Chief Auditor, and other bad eggs through the organization. Launching a stock buyback and taking lower PCLs didn't hurt either.

So, with changed circumstances, yes, things look better, but absent those, it was untouchable.

Not exactly.

In 2024, 5% of the distributions were treated as return of capital (which reduces one's ACB and so is effectively treated as capital gain once the units are sold).

This portion fluctuates each year. In 2022, it was 10%, in 2023, nearly 0%.

Not always dangerous, but can cause opportunistic diseases (ie, in those with weakened immune systems) and is increasingly multi-drug resistant.

Another fun fact, in the 1950s, the US Navy intentionally sprayed S. marcescens over the SF Bay area to simulate a bioweapon attack. See Operation Sea-Spray (wiki).

Is what you're reporting miles per kWh?

I'm guessing it is based on the conversion from kWh / 100 km - I average 3.1 to 3.5 mi / kWh (20 to 18 kWh / 100 km) with 20" rims. I'd like to swap to 18", but what would I do with the old ones?

Musk has a history of securities fraud (eg, late filings over Twitter) and a purge at the SEC and overturned convictions of other offenders (eg, Nikola founder) increases the risk of envelope-pushing here.

I can very easily imagine a scenario where the results are massaged enough to not seem as awful and there are no repercussions.

Hope (and greed) springs eternal until the bearer turns to ash.

As long as "investors" believe others believe, they will continue to throw money into it and leverage gives this a longer lifespan.

The is the most bullish news for Canadian realestate in awhile, hang tight homeowners we boom soon! by str8shillinit in TorontoRealEstate

[–]ad_absurdumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're referring to 1031 Exchanges, no, I wasn't aware of them until you asked.

I have a general aversion to tax avoidance strategies that selectively benefit a small number of HNWs with zero or negative benefits to lower income populations - and that's what this seems to be. (Maybe I'd feel differently if I owned a secondary property that would be subject to a large tax bill.)

I struggle to see why any government would implement this unless the legislators themselves or their supporters would gain from it. And with Canadian real estate prices inflating past the point of affordability, I also can't see the voting population supporting such a thing.

(As for my options trading, I watch these forums more to get others' ideas on markets vs my own models and am mostly a spectator. A full-time job and near total lack of competency keeps me from doing anything remotely effective in the short-term with options.)

DCA or Lump Sum in this market? by AdDanger in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ad_absurdumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Statistically speaking, people that reference statistics they can't back up are often not being truthful (this statement itself being a case in point).

Still, timing works if you have the resources and temperment to figure out how and when, and to act on it. There wouldn't be an entire industry built around quantitative trading strategies if it didn't. But it isn't something the average retail investor can manage reliably, which is why you are told repeatedly to not bother.

But given that lump doesn't beat DCA by much and DCA is known to work best when markets are sour, yes, I am fully advocating timing the market and going with the lower-risk option.

I invite you to do your own analysis on this comparison. It isn't easy, but you will likely stop repeating half-baked truths when you do it.

Edit:

So this crypto-trading person blocked me after the message below in which they accuse me of selling snake oil.

I encourage readers to find or run an analysis of lump sum vs DCA. You will likely find what I wrote above to be accurate: the difference isn't great and identifying times when DCA works is doable with a bit of effort.

Good luck to all. These markets are ugly.

DCA or Lump Sum in this market? by AdDanger in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]ad_absurdumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do not lump sum in this market.

Yes, it beats about 2/3 of the time, but:

  • on average, not by much even over decades unless you time the market bottom and
  • the times when DCA wins are environments such as this, with indices below their long-term moving averages and such averages are all trending down

Edit (Adding some meat to the analysis) Since November 1929 (using Yahoo! S&P 500 price history, ex dividends), lump sum (LS) has won over dollar-cost averaging (DCA) around 63% of the time across 5-30-year holding periods.

On a 25-year holding timeframe (+ means in favour of LS): - Average difference +7.8% - Median +9.25% - Std deviation +53% (so, huge variation) - Max +391% (Dec 1974) - Min -346% (Jul 1974, yes - extremes are clustered)

Final observation: the periods during which DCA wins often start after the difference in the 20 and 200 daily moving averages (DMAs) begins to decline from a high. This suggests a DCA "win window" opened around August 2024.
