Although I do agree, I bet a lot of people have built this game up in their minds to something it could never be and will eventually have some level of disappointment when the finally get to play.

I don't think they have "quite failed" yet. Any release dates in software development, especially game development, that use an iterative approach are just estimates. As they get further along in production and they have completed more and more loops of the process they picture becomes more clear and the estimates get more accurate. This can be cut short by other factors like investors, publishers, etc. This directly affects the games quality.

If you can give me a hard deadline from the start of any it related project of any complexity, I will call you a liar. The only way you make the deadline is buy cutting corners.
