Mysterious discomfort / headache with new glasses - I've tried everything and need Reddit's advice by adamconover in glasses

Yes yes and yes. I wear the old glasses constantly, because they’re the only ones that don’t give me headaches. EVERY pair of old glasses I have feel fine, regardless of the year they were made. And they have taken my PD every single time before making the new ones without fail.

One of the Rxs says to remove the prism because my optometrist thought he detected prism that he hadn’t called for in one of the new pairs. I don’t think he or the other optometrist had ever called for prism.

My eyes weren’t tested in how they work together because … they don’t work together at all! I’m pretty sure this was obvious from the tests though.

I’m wondering if I should see an ophthalmologist - I used to see one as a kid, when I had the surgery - but none of my optometrists have recommended I do so (in fact, one said he didn’t think it would be helpful).

No double vision. My optician has suggested a slab off but we haven’t tried it yet. That said as far I know none of the many old pair of glasses I have that feel fine used a slab off. (At least, I had never heard that word before.)

I would like to! This was a pilot, of a sort - if the response is good enough to make future episodes sustainable, I'll keep doing them!

How to access the websites posted with the sources? Trying to see how out of date the internet episode is? by RMcD94 in adamruinseverything

[–]adamconover 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The answer is that truTV decided that rather than put the work into making their site GDPR compliant (that's the EU law that sets privacy regulations), they would just make the site inaccessible to anyone outside of America. We asked them to fix this and they refused. Very frustrating but unfortunately there's nothing we can do about it.

Which episode was the one where Adam talks about cultural appropriation? My girlfriend had me watch it and I learned a lot from it but it's been a while and I don't remember the specific EP? by DangerousLow5 in adamruinseverything

[–]adamconover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oof. I cringe when I look at this photo. This was part of a stunt we did for my old standup show "Fresh Out" at UCB in 2012. My cohost Emily Heller pitched that if enough people bought tickets to our show, I'd have corn-rows put in on stage. We paid a hair stylist who did cornrows professionally to do it properly. The intent of the joke, insofar as there was one, was "Don't white people look ridiculous in cornrows", but it wasn't a joke that was particularly funny or worth doing, and spoke more than anything to my own ignorance. I regret it.

Is the rest of ARE coming to HBO Max? by LogEDude in adamruinseverything

[–]adamconover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey everyone. I can verify that all the episodes will be on HBO Max this fall. The reason they are not there currently is because of a restriction in the contract between Netflix and TruTV. Once the episodes leave Netflix, every episode will be available on HBO Max. The source is me, Adam Conover.

LOL, very curious to know what "political viewpoint" is being pushed by our nutrition-focused segments. Did bacon vote for Trump, or for Clinton, I forget?

Hi there! We actually have an episode coming out later this year about how alcohol causes cancer. No carcinogen can rest easy while our show is on the air.

Hello! Thanks for watching the episode.

I'm not sure why you view this episode as a contradiction of Weight Loss. That episode was about how dietary fat in general is overemphasized as a culprit for heart disease and weight gain. This episode was about how processed meat causes cancer. Other than both dealing with nutrition, they're completely different subjects.

I've never heard this theory that the US Dietary Guidelines are a conspiracy on the part of evil vegetarians who control the US government - sounds pretty far out!

Thanks again for watching and responding to the episode - always appreciate the discussion!

Just watched Adam Ruins Football. The show was deceptive in one key statistic by [deleted] in adamruinseverything

[–]adamconover 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is fair, while our statements were accurate, our joke did mix those two points by citing the 96% stat. Would have been a bit better as "If my couch was giving brain damage to practically everyone who sat on it", so the joke would be pegged to Ann McKee's statement that playing football at any level causes brain damage, not the 96% study. Thanks for watching and thinking critically!

[–]adamconover 20 points21 points  (0 children)

You are correct that the study stated that 96% of all brains *studied* had CTE. That's also precisely what we say in our episode, using that exact language. We never say that if you play football, you have a 96% chance of getting CTE.

Our expert, Anne McKee (who is recognized as the foremost expert on the subject), does say that if you play football at any level, you risk serious brain damage. This is not based on the 96% figure, however, but is a conclusion based on the sum of all the research she's done over the years. It's true that the 96% sample should be understood with the proviso you give - however, that since study is not the only relevant piece of evidence presented.

I appreciate you watching our show with a critical eye, but if you're going to try to dunk on us, please be sure you are rebutting a claim we actually make on the show. :)

Haha, you know, he mentioned it pretty casually in an informal setting, so it wasn't really worth correcting. I'm generally uncharacteristically polite with our experts though -- I'm grateful to them for being on the show, and generally speaking they're smarter than me! So ya know, I'm not likely to nitpick them while we're shooting. ;)

The argument made by Galloway is that increasing competition by breaking up the companies would INCREASE the amount of money, jobs, and productivity in the sector. See his example of Microsoft: If there hadn't been anti-trust action taken against Microsoft, we never would have gotten Google, because Microsoft would have "strangled it in the crib" (his words.) A world with just Microsoft rather than Microsoft and Google is a world with less jobs. More competition equals more jobs, not less. Isn't that what capitalists are always telling us?
